is it possible to become allergic to different types of toilet paper?
it seems like ever since i moved in with my roommate, he buys scott tissue, and i've never used it before, and now recently my vagina has started to get red and itchy on the outside and a little on the inside; i was hoping maybe it was because i havent been shaving down there as often as i used to and maybe i just missed a spot or two...
PLEASE HELP!
The more likely answer is that you may have a yeast infection. Ive seen how TP is made and I dont believe that is the problem unless you may be allergic to bleaching agents or something like that which I will dare not rule out. There is test you can buy over the counter now that will tell you if you may have a yeast infection. Call a pharmacy to ask the name of the product if you might be embarassed to do it in person. A yeast infection can be caused by several different things including something as innocent as moving to a new apt/house. Some bacteria may just be floating around the new place on a toilet seat or something like that (im not 100 percent sure that a yeast infection can be transmitted that way). I dont mean to alarm you. If youve ever had a yeast infection before then you know it can be treated easily. If youve never had one then know it can be treated easily. But get that test to find out. If it is negative then see your doctor. You dont want to mess around with your sexual health. An untreated infection of any kind can lead to bigger problems. You can also rule out the TP concern by going back to using the TP you used to use.

There is such a thing as a toilet paper allergy. I never knew there was such a thing until I started reading up on it and it's more common than you think. It does give off signs of a yeast invection but if you switch your tp in a matter of a few days it'll be a lot better if it is an allergy. In the meantime, use baby wipes for sensitive skin or your brand that you like. It hurts, itches and is not fun, I know. Good luck

Yes:

This is not an uncommon problem for both male and female - probably more common for females, because they have to use TP more often. The main problem is in 'white' toilet paper. Additives are used in the manufacturing process to whiten the paper, because American users associate 'white' with purity.

The best and quickest remedy is to use natural TP without ANY additives. This is often easy to obtain abroad. In fact Kimberley-Clark manufacture a brand in the USA called 'Natural', but do not market it in the USA. It is distributed throughout Central America. When I first used this product I was itch free within 24 hours and have remained so with exclusive use.

'Natural" is the cheaper brand in Costa Rica, and is very comfortable to use - just got to get over the color prejudice!

Yeast in infections cannot be picked up off of a toilet, just to clarify that. Also, toilet paper allergies are more common than you'd think because they are so frequently misdiagnosed as yeast infections. Take the test to find out if there is fungal irritation and if there isn't switch toilet papers. Those that use the least processing are the best option because they contain the least chemicals. The biggest chemical offender is formaldehyde. It's used to give the paper strength particularly with those that are supposed to be softer varieties.

I am allergic to scott, charmin, kleenex, etc. For the past 30 years everytime I try a new brand of toilet paper I have itching and burning on my rectum when I use them. I found a toilet paper that do not cause this and it is by Costco brand toilet paper, it is by Kirkland. I told my doctor I thought it was herpes and she said if it inflames as a boil or bump it is. I told the doctor it must be the bleach that these companies use. I've tried all brands of toilet paper and when I go at Costco and bought Kirkland toilet paper, the rash on my rectum went away.Kirland is the only toilet paper I was able to use for the last 15 years and I do not get a rash.

I know for a fact I am allergic to Cottonelle and I researched it. They seem to use bleach to make it look whiter. I worked last year at a hotel and had to bring my own. Angel Soft seems easier to tolerate. Most hotels use Cottonelle and I am miserable after a couple of days.

Yes it could be the Scott tissue. I was just at the Dr.'s office for the same thing. I started itching as soon as I switched paper.

Scott causes me major problems, as does Cottonelle. I have been diagnosed with a contact allergy to cinnamic aldehyde, which is a component of many "fragrances". So I need to look for fragrance free (NOT the same as "unscented") products - toilet paper, detergent, soap, etc. Not always easy to find.

Thank you for posting this concern! I am on my third round of treating a "yeast infection," but couldn't understand why it was reoccurring especially since I am addressing this again. I recently notice that the itching resumed after using the Scott'sTP to dry the affected area after a wash. Then I found your post. I can't imagine what women who have had to deal with this thought about their bodies without this forum and your bringing your query here.

I wonder if you've discovered any solutions since this post.

I have had so many problems with different toilet papers and finally started using believe it or not CVS brand as they do not use chlorine bleach.

Yes it is possible to be allergic to toilet paper.  Years ago (about 1980 or so) I became allergic to many products and a doctor in the alternative medicine field identified formaldehyde as a common allergen in paper products.  I've read recently that some people are allergic to corn and corn starch is also in some paper products.

In any case, my allergy (when it came to toilet paper) turned out to be formaldehyde.  My doctor said that Royale does not have formaldehyde.  Unfortunately I do not have a list of other brands that might also be free of formaldehyde.  But I have been sticking to the one product I know about without any problems ever since.

I've switched from Scott Soft TP after suffering a year with rectal and butt cracks, split clear up my to my back. This is very painful. The doctor diagnosed me with yeast infection. Meds didn't clear it up. I switched toilet paper and it disappeared. Went to a friends house for a couple days, they had Scott Soft toilet paper and I had to use it. And guess what I'm in major pain again, butt is cracked and its hurts to sit. So I'm guessing I'm having an allergic reaction to the Scott toilet paper. Just the Soft, I use the the Regular Scott and it does not bother me at all. Does anyone else have this issure?

Yes, Yes Yes!

After using the old type of Scott Tissue for many years, I bought a big block of the new "soft" variety at Sam's.  it is very linty and leaves lots of fiber on the body., and I think it travels up the vagina.  I have had a burning sensation there and outside for about 3 weeks after trying  to use up the Scott "soft" tissue.  Thinking it was something to do with menopause, I didn't address the problem until it was becoming painful.

Though I have quit using the Scott, I think the fibers may somehow remain and continue to irritate as I am still in discomfort.  I just hope there is no bacterial infection.  I go to the Doc next week.  I just googled the subject and see other cases that are similar.  I had used the old style of Scott tissue for decades with no problems.  Now, in their effort to be "soft, "  once again a product that was not broken has been "Improved" and therefore ruined.
