Hi, I have 5th disease, caused by Parvovirus. It’s also called slapped cheek disease, because of face rash which looks like slap marks, it’s a mild disease. But are there any other complications of infection with Parvovirus?
Parvovirus affects only humans. Slapped cheek disease is childhood disease, but it can be seen in adults too. Usually, it’s a mild illness, causing rash all over body, lasting 1-3 weeks. No medications are required for the treatment. Only if necessary some cream to reduce itching of the rash or pain killers from time to time. Once it has flashed out on the skin it’s not contagious any more. It can be transmitted to other people only during incubation period, which is before the rash appears. Complications occur only in pregnant women, because parvovirus is harmful for the fetus. Some adults with special sorts of anemia have more serious consequences of the 5th disease.
