I had this surgery on March 30, 2006, I was sent home with an Polar Care 300, (Electric Ice Pack) and a On Q Pain Buster. I followed instructions and took medication as instructed. On the 5 day of April (6 days post surgery), I started experiencing different symptoms, such as the knee was hot and from mid chin down extremely cold. My question to you is this normal. If this is abnormal what could be the cause and what should I do.

The day after I went home after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, I started experiencing hot knee, swelling and throbbing pain. I got really scared especially because of the swelling and went to see my surgeon right away.
I think they took a culture from a knee joint and had it examined. They found a presence of Staphylococcus aureus-bacterium. I have no idea where it could have gotten from, maybe from my skin or their instruments, they didn’t tell me and I was too shocked too ask anything at the time being.
Anyway, I was put on antibiotics and some weeks after I was as good as new, nothing ELSE went wrong. I can’t say if your hot knee may have anything to do with bacterial infection, but I would have it checked just to be on the safe side.
They did tell me that these kinds of infections are very rare, but as you can see it happens.
As for what to do, maybe you should give a call to your surgeon and ask some questions. If the symptoms are too debilitating, then go there or see your GP.

I had my knee scoped 3 days ago, and this morning it feels very hot and a little swollen. Is this normal after knee surgery?
