Had my GB out 5 days ago, off the meds, now having lower back pain radiating to the stomach, very uncomfortable. Using a hot water bottle all the time. After reading many posts on this, there does not seem to be an answer for all of this.  Felt strange when I went to bed, with my chest feeling weird.    I have my post op apt in a week with the surgeon.  I had a less than 1% functioning GB. I have another question, what causes this and how long does it take for one's GB to get to that state.  Also, if there was anything wrong at the time of removal, i.e. GB "C" would the doctor tell me, or wait for the appointment that is scheduled in a week or so?  Would love to hear from someone with some answers......

I found the answer to the "killer right shoulder pain" , I filled  a zip-loc quart sized bag with ice (double bag for leak protection) and while laying down put it right on gall bladder site (middle right abdomen). no moist towel , just right on skin , after about 10 minutes or so my shoulder pain was gone. the ice pack didn't even feel cold as usual. the thing i had remember was the there was nothing wrong with my shoulder, that the pain was from the organs and i only felt it in my shoulder.

i hope this helps

Had my Gallbladder out four weeks ago and experienced the pain in the right side of my back. I didn't take any pain medication that was was prescribed for me. I used an icepack for 20 minutes at a time and that really helped. I'm still having pain in my naval where the incision is.  My incisions have all healed very well. I think by using ice from day one it helped inflamation. Hope this helps.

I had my gallbladder removed six days ago via laparoscopy.  I had one moderately-sized gallstone.  An ultrasound located it, and I also had a CT scan, which revealed no other abnormalities.  I was having intermittent pain in the region of the lower esophageal sphincter when I swallowed food, and in the upper right region of my back, just below the scapula.  The surgery went well, and I'm having no aftereffects.

However, I still have the exact same pains in the same locations.  Either the gallstone wasn't causing the pain, or I'm experiencing phantom pain in the same places, except that it has increased in severity and frequency.  I am convinced that the gallstone wasn't the cause of my pain, and will see my GI specialist next week for more diagnosis.  The pain in my back comes and goes, and varies in intensity.  I am tolerating it at this point rather than taking the pain medication, which has worse side effects than the pain.  But it's very difficult for me to eat anything because of the pain when the food passes from the esophagus to the duodenum.  Liquids don't cause me pain, however, so I'm eating very little solid food for now.

A correction: The pain I'm experiencing is in the right center of my back, just below the scapula, not the clavicle.

I have my GB out in April 2013 by keyhole sugery, everthing when fine with the op was left home later that day.  Had the regular problems with my shoulder, now 6 months on i have been back to see my gp because i am still getting the pain i had pre  op.  he has suggested that maybe there is a gallstone left in the bile duct, he sent a request to the local hospital to see the doctor who performed by op, i have gotten an appointment for 21st November.  Woke up at 4 this morn with the awful pain and still have a bad pain in my back.  I am currently on a low fat diet but dont think this matters as my mom had the same op 3 years ago and seems to be able to eat what she wants where as i can not even eat a bag of chips and im doubled over in pain, just wondering if anyone is in the same situation as myself,

I was wondering if the above person who had the lower left side back pain ever found out what that was? That is what I woke up with this morning four days post GB surgery. Should I be concerned?

I had my gallbladder removed on 10/15/13. I had a very severe case, though. My gallbladder was badly infected, filled with gallstones, and had fluid around it. I was in the hospital for eight days, and in the ICU for 5-6 days during my stay. I developed jaundice for a day or two, and I had to have a blood transfusion, and a frozen plasma transfusion. I don't remember much pain while I was actually in the hospital, because I was doped up on pain killers the whole time. I had a drainage tube stapled into my stomach, because I was bleeding profusely due to an artery not closing properly right away, but it's fine now, and I've had the drainage tube removed. After I was discharged, I had sharp pains in my stomach, usually only when I had to sit up. I was bed-ridden on my couch for weeks because I couldn't stand to lay down flat on my bed. I tried laying on my to take a nap shortly after coming home, and I woke up with muscle spasms in my lower right side of my back that lasted for a few weeks. I had pain my in right shoulder, and it hurt to even take a deep breath, sneeze, cough, or anything that had to do with air. My recovery has lasted over a month, due to my case being so severe, but I'm happy to say that I'm finally feeling better, the pain has subsided tremendously, and I feel like I can sleep without the pain waking me up every two hours. I'm feeling more like myself, even though I'm still trying to stretch the muscle underneath my incisions because it aches every so often. I'm happy to say that it's getting better, and to everyone going through the same thing, it WILL get better. I didn't think it would, but I had to be patient and keep from stressing myself out.

I had my gallbladder removed about three years ago and I still deal with that dull pain under my right shoulder blade. I notice it after I eat fatty foods, but over the past few months I've had this "attack" - like pain that went from my upper stomach to the right side under my shoulder blade. Painful, very uncomfortable and last up to three hours. I get nauseous and break out into a cold sweat ... definitely not fun, especially since it happens in the middle of the night. I think its a mix of indigestion, stress and random post-gallbladder issues. It is so annoying and every doctor I've seen never has an answer. I think I am really going to try and change my diet and de-stress more.
