Hello all, I'm a type 1 and have been so for approximately 20 years. Throughout this time I have had really bad hypos that make me become aggressive and get nasty with people. Now this doesn't happen all the time but rather comes and goes in sort of a cycle. I have to adjust my insulin particularly at night time to bring me back into control. Most of the time however, I don't have a problem. At any rate, what can I do to keep my aggressive moods from popping in from time to time. Anyone with some insight out there. I would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
HIYA, It is very common to have what is called hypo unawareness and the individual who has this is generally not aware of it. For all others concerned, it is not something you can deal with very well but there are a few things that can be done to alter the behavior.
One of the first things you can do to raise your sugar levels for a couple of weeks to make sure you don't get hypos. Now you will need to test your blood sugar levels more frequently so you can get a handle on where your sugar levels need to be. Next, make sure to take in more protein and lower your carb intake so you don't need to take as much insulin. As you make these adjustments, make sure to record the your behavior to see how you behave with different blood sugar levels. You should have some awareness of your behavior by now and know how to keep their sugar levels higher. This procedure seems to work for many people and I hope that it will work for you. I know how difficult this can be so I wish the best. You may need someone to help you with this as they can better observe changes in your behavior than you can.
