I've had several experiences using loperamide for opiate withdrawal, all were the same. First, it works. Secondly, some of the loperamide definitely crosses my blood brain barrier.
1. I take a dose of loperamide just when the withdrawal begins. Not too large a dose, often it's just 4 2 mg. pills.
2. I occupy myself until it enters my system, usually a good 2-4 hours. (It isn't rapid acting).
3. At about Hour #2 I notice all the cramping & diarrhea is stopped. My guts feel relaxed, so to speak.
4. Right about Hour 3 or 4 I start feeling drowsy, like a heavy-eyed but non-euphoric drowsy.
5. I lay down and fall asleep quite quickly. The loperamide obviously induced drowsiness - when really I should be jumping out of my skin from withdrawal.
6. I'll wake up maybe 3-6 hours later feeling very relaxed. It's a somewhat pleasant 'no worries' relaxed feeling. A very, very light euphoria perhaps. Something like a tiny dose of Fentanyl, but not like a codeine/morphine type of feeling.
7. So I can tell it's crossed my BBB to some extent, and also eliminated completely the physical withdrawal in my intestines.
8. I'll redose many hours later (like 8-12 hrs.), again, once I start to feel withdrawal symptoms again.
Exact same experience many times, so it isn't a coincidence or placebo effect.

I wish I would have known about this little remedy 18 months ago. Been on subs. since then, recovering from decades of opiates. I am tapering down for the past 6 months. Lower I go I start feeling more and more withdrawl. Does anyone know if this remedy works for Subs.? I'm just ready to say screw it and quit the whole mess!!

As much as you may have felt relief from taking loperamide, it should be noted that this particular opiate doesn't bind to opiate receptors in the brain and therefore substitute for opiates or relieve withdrawal symptoms. Loperamide does cross the blood/brain barrier - but is immediately flushed out of the brain. Loperamide will treat diarrhea, one symptom of opiate withdrawal. But, it won't help with symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes, nausea and vomiting, muscle aches, and drug cravings. Only a drug that binds to the brain's opiate receptors can do that ... Sorry to disappoint. The placebo effect is a wonderful thing; but unfortunately it's not reliable among people. Glad you got relief - but it was your own head giving you relief, not the diarrhea remedy

The immodium will keep me well for awhile so you probably won't have to redose too much , if at all. It really gets you over that first hurdle.
Good luck and God Bless

You're wrong. Throw out your textbook knowledge and let REAL EXPERIENCE sink in. You're doing nobody any favors repeating this c**p.

It's possible, you won't die(you'll just feel like it). Not reccommened and most people never make it more than a few days cold turkey, but it's possible.
IME kicking takes finess, knowledge and a will power that's ready to make a change. When you put all those together, you get the job done.
Best advice - wean down to as low a dose as you can - then do the immodium trick. Probably the most simple way to do it.

Also, Tagamet, Quinine water, and fresh white grapefruit juice will help the Loperamide
cross the Blood-Brain-Barrier; not only in the gut, so you should get a better effect. See Aaron Cohen on YouTube for the low down! Soon to be one LESS chronic pain med user!!

I can't believe what i'm experiencing.Loperamide is a wonder drug.I have been reading this whole thread for a long time and i was like, how can this be.But i wanted to try for myself today, just the loperamide by itself.I took 15 and felt a bit better, then i took 5 more and that was the magic dose.I haven't touched my dilaudid since 4am this morning.By now i would be in so much pain and jittery to say the least.I don't know when i will dose again but my first dose was like 11am this morning.I'm not a heavy opiate user.I take like 3 to 4 8mg dilaudid all day, sometimes 5 depending how bad my pain is.I don't know if most people consider that a lot.I also get 30mg ms morphine which isn't as strong so i take 4 of them in a day.Now i don't do both in a day at all.One day i do the dilaudid and the next day i do the morphine, that seems to work best for me.I switch back and forth for the full 28days till i go to pain mgt.I use to abuse oxycodone i won't lie.I was on massive amounts of it,yes it was my fault but now i switched over to dilaudid a yr or so ago due to wanting to cut down on my meds.I believe oxy is way easier to abuse then dilaudid but that's imo.I use to take a ton of oxy a day but through hard work i cut myself all the way down to very little,i use to take like 300+mg of oxy a day,i now take the dilaudid that i mentioned which is like 1/8 of what i use to do.So for anyone who thinks this doesn't work and is a skeptic as i was,it does and i have i mean 100%no withdrawl and that's just with the lope.I have heard that quinine will make it a 5 to 10x better experience.I have a little tiredness, but other then that it's awesome and a miracle drug.If you get constipated which we shouldn't as opiate users should be used to it,take pro biotics,it will clean you out everyday.I take the 30billion,10strains ultimate flora at walmart and it does wonders.I'm going to go out and buy some quinine tom and see if that works even better.Just for the record i have been on pain meds since 97 so i'm no stranger to this.Very soon i'm going to quit. It's draining my wallet just going to pain mgt and getting them at the pharmacy.God bless.

So glad to hear this is working for you. I read about the loperamide for two years and was skeptical. Sounded too good to be true. I took morphine, oxy, hydro daily for seven years at high doses. Quit with no problem using loperamide. Who would have thought such a simple OTC could undo horrific w/d? I was clean for four months. A huge worry was if I needed pain pills again for surgery or otherwise...would I have to start over? Well, I had to have a script for one month after an injury, then quit again using loperamide - piece of cake, and shorter time to get back to normal.
After one month, you should be able to taper way down and still feel good. You will be amazed at what normal feels like again. Keep coming back here if you need moral support. It is worth it. Keep going and good luck!

Loperamide has that edge to it. It is by far the lesser of two evils compared to the pain pills. You can taper off using the slow method. Just dole out a certain number in pill bottles each day. Since they are only 2 mg, reducing one pile every day or two isn't noticeable.
