Jeani,
I just had bunion surgery on my left foot that required pins as well as a staple in the upper part of the toe. And I'm wondering about your surgery. My surgery was just four weeks ago on March 6th and I was able to drive my stick shift vehicle with a surgical boot two weeks after surgery. I believe that I was fortunate to have a great surgeon and I have had a good experience so far. My toe looks great and the pain hasn't been too bad other than the first weekend. I hope things go well for you!

It sounds you have more lucky than some of us. I had a spur removed on my big toe. I bothered me when I used some shoes, but I was able to walk on mountains for 3 hours without pain. The doctor promised me it was simple and I could wear my pretty working shoes without a pain for no less than ten years. It has been four months since the surgery and now I can not walk one step without severe continous pain. The surgeon is ignoring me and told me I may just have arthritis and he could do another surgery. He is not taking responsibility and release from his care like I am perfect now. I feel frustrated, depressed as I cannot wear any shoes only the orthopedic one and with pain. If I would know this or if he would explain to me this results I will never had that surgery. His promise was a lied to get money.
My husband was laid and lost the medical coverage so I cannot have a corrective action now. It seems you will be fine.

Camille - I notice you are in Vancouver, WA. I am in Seattle and I need the same procedure. No one has explained to me anything about external fixation allowing for a little earlier weight - -bearing. Is there a way you can refer me to your doctor, or email me?

My 14-year-old is supposed to have surgery this summer for her bunions. The doctor recommended doing the left foot, which is her worst foot first and then 6 weeks following that doing the right foot. As she is very active and plays two sports, I was wondering if it is better to do a bilateral bunionectomy and get it over with rather than dragging it out. I can't see laying her up the entire summer and then starting back to school with a "boot" in August. Although after reading some of the posts in this forum about the bilateral I'm a little worried about doing that as well. Although the people who had certain problems didn't really specificy if being overweight might have been a factor in their ability to be ambulatory sooner or if there were any other health problems having a bearing on the recovery.

i just had a bilateral bunionectomy....aaand basically i'd say it depends on your tolerance for pain. honestly i have tattoos and piercings and most people would say they couldn't tolerate that well let me tell you, i've never experienced pain like this. i also had a fifth digit arthroplasty which could be where my pain is coming from but my advice is if you want to get it done quickly do the bilateral. but be warned its very painful and you need CONSTANT care. i literally cant make it to the bathroom on my own. or do one at a time and suck it up and take it easy for a few months.

I am so glad I didn't read these posts before I had my surgery..it would have scared me off. I have been a nurse for 18 years with problem bunions. I always noted when one of my patients had bunionectomy listed in their history. I would ask them how they did, would they recommend the surgery and would they do it again. They all...ALL said yes. This is what lead me to have my bilateral bunionectomy with oseotomy on May 23. I am on post-op day 4 and although I was uncomfortable the first 2 days it was controlled with the pain pills prescribed. I have been walking to the bathroom with post-op shoes and crutches. I have been experiencing a little more throbbing in my left foot when I first stand but it lets up and I have been able to make it around the apartment on one crutch today. Unless I am going to the bathroom or kitchen I keep my feet elevated.I am very happy so far with the progression of things.
The worse thing is I'm getting bored with laying around..getting alot of reading done..

I had both feet done at the same time....and yes it was hard...but I have heard many say that they had onely ONE done bc they never went back for the second one after having the first one done. This is why I wanted both done....
I knew I wouldn't have the time or energy to do this again....after experiencing it once!
For me, it worked well :-)

i had both of my feet done at the same time at the hospital for special surgery in NYC, IT WAS AMAZING, my doctor is the best in the foot and ankle dept. Im 15 and I only was on pain meds for 3 days because they make you all high and stuff and I hated not feeling in control. (im very much against that feeling) I have an orthotic and a night brace for both feet and i feel amazing. I was born with my toes stacked under each other, the worst the hospital i was born at has ever seen. The reason i mention this is because if anyone understands the pain ALL the time it's me. There's nothig to be scared of, i was sooo excites to be normal for the first time so thats how i make it better until im healed.

I am 23, and just had bilateral bubionectomy nearly five weeks ago.
Honestly, I am glad i did it.
I am rarely in any pain now, though there was a fair bit at first.
Since my bunions were pretty bad, I'm still not allowed to walk, my first physical therapy appointment is this week.
The only complication I've had is that I managed to dislocate my big toe on my right foot. That was very painful.

I had a bilateral scarf/akin bunionectomy 8 days ago (in Australia), and have been weight bearing (on heels) with crutches since day 2 post op.
The procedure involved releasing the tight ligaments, shaving the bunion, cutting the 1st metatarsal and adjusting it to narrow the foot and realign the joint. A screw was then placed in the bone with the excess bone shaved and the joint capsule tightened. I have a small incision on top of my foot between the first and second toes and another long incision down the inside of my foot. Plaster was not required.
I was initially hesitant about putting any pressure on my feet but the surgeon and physio therapist insisted that I start walking (hobbling) as soon as the local anaesthetic wore off and I regained control over my legs.
So far I have had very little pain... mostly throbbing if I stand up for too long or sit somewhere too hot. I spend all day in bed with my feet elevated, icing when my feet get hot, and taking my pain medication religiously - alternating Paracetamol and Ibuprofen tablets every two hours. I only get up to have a shower or go to the bathroom. I'm very lucky to have a mother and husband who are feeding me and cleaning up after me!!! I think my calf muscles are shrinking due to the lack of activity...
My stitches are coming out next week and I start physio therapy the same day!!! I've been told that I should be able to drive in around 3-4 weeks - as soon as I can put pressure on the ball of my foot, but that the swelling will actually increase over a six week period :-(
Has anyone else had the same procedure as me? The surgeon told me that the best shoes to wear after I get my stitches out are either Crocs or thongs. Got any suggestions? It's summer in Australia so I'll need shoes that breathe ;-)

Im 3 days post bilateral bunionectomy and the pain isnt so bad. some throbbing and it only hurts when I try to walk. Elevation and ice are helping, pain meds dont do much so Im just taking regular tylenol. My dr said 4-6 weeks recovery but I think it will be sooner. Nothing to be scared about and the pain im having now healing is the same pain I'v been in for years with bunions. But soon it will go away for good!!

I had bilateral.. but one at a time.. about 20 years ago. The first one was inpatient, and required a lot of pain medication. I ended up with diladid, a synthetic, being the only thing I could tolerate without adverse effects. It was awful, actually. But I'm glad I did it. The second time was outpatient, and I'm sorry I did it that way. The pain was unbearable. Just when you think it can't possibly get any worse without passing out, it gets worse. it was not good pain management being outpatient.
I got a screw implanted in both feet.. and had one removed a couple of years later. The second screw remains. I'm starting to get leg cramps, so I think I will have it removed. But overall it
I had to take a lot of time off work, and lie on the dock. Oh well!
That's my 2 cents.
