I was diagnosed hypothyroidism two days ago. The doctor prescribed synthroid to me but when I confirmed that I do take birth control pills, he decided not to give me this medicine. Why? Did anybody have any problems with this drug while being on BC pills? All replies welcome!!

Hi! I haven’t had any problems but my doctor told me the same thing. Supposedly BC pills can decrease synthroid’s effect. I got off BC pills, and then started taking synthroid. Have been on it for 2 years now.

I have taken bc s and synthroid for 3 years together and I have not gained weight or gotten pregnet.

It is actually the effectiveness of the BC that is decreased. I take both (actually I use a BC patch), but when I was on the pill my doctor said to take BC in the morning and synthroid at night so as to increase how effective each would be.

hmmmm, I don't know what's up with that. I have been taking bc pills and synthroid now for 9 months and I haven't gotten pregnant or had any additional thyroid issues. My doc has gone over my blood test results with me, and my T4 was a little high (not abnormal, just on the high side) and he said that was expected because I was on the BC pills. He didn't say why...and I didn't ask because I feel better now that I have in years. I guess each doctor is different!

T4 levels may be elevated due to the estrogen in the pill binding some thyroid hormone, but the "free T4" (a better test than the total T4 level) would not be affected and the TSH would not be affected. So your doctor was correct if he was talking about the total T4 level being a bit on the high side because of BC pills. It is just the way they do the measurement in that blood test that makes the difference.

I take birth control and synthroid. The synthroid says to be taken in the morning on an empty stomach to be the most effective. Should I take my birth control at night or is it okay to take both in the morning?
