Everyone is different. the side effects may affect someone much differently than they affect someone else. Giving it a try for at least 2 to 3 months would be the best bet. I have not had an issue with Ortha TriCyclen Lo and now i switched to the generic Cryselle (starting on Sunday) so we will see how it works out...if not, I'm going to have to find something else...
Just because it shouldn't doesn't mean birth control pills don't cause weight gain I too gained around 20 lbs on yaz and no i didn't sit around eating junk all day I had a very active life style
To be honest i think that in this day and age the pills side-effects are actually shocking. i've had an absolute nightmare with contraception. I started with the contraceptive injection which i decided to come off of because it started to make me put on a tiny bit of weight and it was also a hassle going back and forth to the doctors constantly. I was recommended the implant (a small stick they insert in your arm) which gave me CONSTANT bleeding which eventually made me become aneamic - tired constantly due to the massive blood loss and it also made me put on about a stone and a half in the 2 months i was on it. I got this removed and went back to the injection. This didn't solve the problem as although i wasn't putting on weight as much, i was still gaining. I was only 16 at the time and before i started all this contraceptive rubbish i was a size 8-10. i've now been through three different kinds of pill and i'm currently taking logynon which hasn't made me gain anything (that im aware of) but makes me CONSTANTLY hungry which to be honest isn't good for anyone especially as i'm at college and all the people im friends with happen to be the kind of people who eat as much as they like and never gain any weight. I now yet again want to change pill but to be honest it doesnt look like im ever going to get anywhere! im now a size 14 which i absolutely hate. im not sure whether it is my pill or the self consciousness but im often quite down and tired, im nothing like the person i used to be and its all down to contraception. makes you wonder why anyone goes on it doesnt it lol! ive been searching on the internet for ages now and i am yet to find a pill that everyone has said to be successful and to not cause weight gain! i cant understand why doctors can claim it isnt contraception that makes you put on weight. thats so stupid, all they have to do is look on all these Internet forums. I wonder whether i have such difficulty with this because one side of my family are quite large, (dont get me wrong in thinking oh thats obviously why shes put on weight because its not!!! i dont eat alot and i was never ever like this before i started contraception) im just wondering if that plays a part in why NO contraceptive method suits me?! does anyone else have a similar circumstance? doctors have said to me, different contraception suits different people..... what happens when nothing suits you????????
NO kidding. On the three months I was on the pill Trinessa, it freaking made me gain 11 lbs (I had a gut and love handles which was strange at best because I've always been tall and thin), and emotional to the point my bf thought I needed therapy!!??!!?! Yikes. I stopped taking it exactly two weeks ago yesterday and have since have alreay noticed 6 lbs drop instanty and feel way more mentally stable. I am now only using condoms and spermacide and will never go on any pill again.
I started taking Loestrin24fe 2 months ago, I work out 2 hours a day, and eat a healthy diet daily. I have gained weight on this pill and am switching, I took Yaz years ago and really liked it.
has anyone gained weight taking th azzurette birth control pill? I was on yaz then i stopped taking it due to weight gain. I just started taking the azurrette and wanted to know possible side effects
get off trinessa....i got pregnant on that pill...not worth the extra $$ you save at the pharmacy as it's the generic.
I find the more progestin the pill has the more weight it makes me gain. Stay clear of the progestin only BC. Like Depo-Provera, Micronor, Plan B, Mirena or basically anything that "lasts" since BC with estrogen in them can not be stockpiled in the body 'safely' like progestins can. (the safety of high dose progestin's is questionable as well though)
It has been said that the weight gain on BCP's is "mostly water weight" due to estrogen. This is a big pile of BS if you ask me. I was on Diane-35 which has a moderate to high level of Estrogen for new BCP pills (35 mcgs) and I lost weight. THis is mostly to due (I suspect) because there is no progestin in it, only cyproterone acetate which acts like a progestin but really isn't. Any other pill I've been on with high progestin content made me gain weight like crazy. Primarily Yasmin (super high progestin potency in Yasmin despite the "diuretic" properties of the drospirenone progestin.)
Now if it were just the water weight that made women gain - then no one should gain any weight while on Yasmin since it has a diuretic effect. Yet for me and many of my female friends - this was not the case on Yasmin. Not to mention that it made my breasts like two huge hard balls of lumpy cement.
Similarly Depo-Provera with it's progestin only content made me puff up like marshmallow. No estradiol in Depo (since estradiol can not be given in high doses like progestins can - therefore a 3 month long lasting needle can not have estradiol in it.) So then why did I gain weight on it if it has no estrogen? Obviously because it is FULL of progestin. (BTW Progestin is the name for fake or drug Progesterones - i.e. non bio-identical progesterones)
This is simple. So simple in fact I do not understand why the 'water weight only' myth pervades women's magazines and advice columns etc. I drives me absolutely bonkers to hear that lie! Progesterone is the hormone that KEEPS you pregnant. It is a 'holding' hormone. It holds your uterus lining in, retains water, it holds the embryo to the lining, it slows metabolism, slows digestion, constipates and retains. Do you typically loose weight during pregnancy or gain weight during pregnancy? Obviously you gain weight and it's not just baby weight or water weight- it's all over for most women. This is due to the high high production of progesterone the body makes during pregnancy for "gestation" hence PRO-'gest'-erone. Is a hormone who's purpose it is to KEEP you pregnant going to slow your metabolism or rev it up? Obviously slow it down... and make you voraciously hungry - this is better for baby to get all the nutrients it needs. DO NOT blame estrogen or particularly estradiol for this.
Just think ladies... Are your pants tighter in the 2nd half of your cycle (after ovulation and during the Pre-Menstrual phase - when progesterone dominates) or are your pants tighter in the first half of your cycle (where estradiol dominates)? Answer to 99% of women is the second half of the cycle pants are tighter. The PMS bloat is due to PROGESTERONE high and dominance.... the constipation and metabolism slowing is due to PROGESTERONE. Estrogen makes things flexible and soft. Progesterone makes them hard and rigid. (typically).
I have no idea why doctors and pharmacists blame high estradiol content in pills for weight gain. This is ridiculous. It's high progestin potency that causes the weight gain most of the time - unless you have something like wildly high in estradiol like they used to give back in the 60s or 70s- then it might be a contributing factor - but because high estradiol pills are hardly ever prescribed anymore, and haven't been since like the 70's - yet women still continue to gain weight on the low estradiol pills (35mcg or lower) - I think the culprit is obvious. High progestin content is to blame.
It's also interesting to note that the estradiol used in the pill is bio-identical. Yet the progestin's used in the pill NEVER are bio-identical. Therefore the side-effects in my opinion for most people anyways - are more likely to come from the synthetic non-bioidentical culprit in the pill, rather than the bio-identical half of the pill.
Low dose progestin pills are hard to find in North America. The only ones I know of are Tri-Cyclen, Ortho-Cyclen, and Diane-35. Alesse is fairly low in progestin - but it is a more androgenic progestin and I don't recommend it to my friends personally.
3rd and 4th generation progestins are typically the ones without any androgenic side-effects or at least less, the problem with these pills (Yasmin and Marvelon) is that while they have less androgenic effects and may have a diuretic effect on water weight gain - they are ridiculously high in progestin potency. The highest in fact that I have found. They could likely cut the progestin in 1/4 and still have enough progestin potency to be 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. (don't try this at home ladies - I'm not a doctor - but I have researched this extensively). In fact in Europe they basically have done just that - Made BCpills with the 3rd and 4th generation progestins - yet cut the progestin dose in half or more - and still ended up with more than enough progestin in their pills to prevent pregnancies.
Again I'm not a doctor so don't believe me, do your own research and collaborate with your doctor. Look up progestin potencies or ask for the progestin potency chart from your doctor or pharmacist which Tri-Cyclen-lo put out with their marketing stuff. Yasmin is the absolute highest progestin potency you can find on the market in Canada and the US to my awareness. Despite it's other redeeming qualities (anti-androgenic and diuretic) to me - Yasmin is an absolute FAIL because of the excess of drospirenone (the progestin) used. If they used about 1/5 less drospirenone - then I would try it again. Far far less could surely be used and still have the effect of BirthControl and cycle regulation. And Yaz is no better. The progestin (drospirenone) content is the same in both Yasmin and Yaz- the thing that changes is estradiol - Yaz has less estradiol. Woopdy doo. I want less drospirenone not nessisarily less estradiol.
Also don't be tricked with tri-cyclen lo vs. tri-cyclen. The "lo" part of it is in regards to the estradiol - not the progestin... although I still recommend tri-cyclen lo or tri-cyclen to my girlfriends due to it's relatively low progestin potency (Both tri-cyclen and tri-cyclen low have low progestin potency - tri-cyclen lo has low estradiol content as well as low progestin).
That's my bit. Hope it's been helpful for some of you ladies.

Case in point - Trinessa is a high progestin pill.
Another case in point - Seasonale is a high progestin pill with Levonorgestrel. Levonorgestrel is a progestin with higher than necessary androgenic side-effects. Androgens have been linked to high LDL cholesterol and insulin resistance (the primary cause of belly fat).
Alesse and Plan B, Mirena, norplant are other contraceptives with Levonorgestrel. Steer clear unless you've been told you have some sort of androgen deficiency (unlikely for women).

My mistake - Trinessa is similar to Tri-Cyclen - I was thinking Trinessa was the one you go 3 months on steady before a pill free break is taken to induce the menstrual like bleeding. I thought that because of the Tri- part of the name - I was thinking 3 months. The one I was actually thinking of is Seasonale - which I am correct in thinking is allows you to go three months without a period but is made with Levonorgestrel which is a more androgenic progestin than that in Ortho-Cyclen or Tri-Cyclen.
Marvelon has FAR FAR to much progestin potency. It is the reason you are emotional and gaining weight.
When one is pregant progestin is very high - this is also the case when one is taking high progestin pills. Weight gain and emotional moodiness is common.
If you can't tolerate either Tri-Cyclen Lo, Tri-Cyclen, Ortho-Cyclen or Diane-35... my guess is that you will have to find other means of Birth Control which are non-hormonal. At least unless Canada and the US approve some of the low-progestin, low-androgen dose pills that Europe has on the market already.

I have tried many birth controls and I haven't been happy with any of them. I have severe PMS and my doctors thought that birth control might stabilize my moods. So far I haven't had any luck with any of them I've just gained weight. I would like to put out a warning to women do not try Depo Provera I tried it when I was younger and I never really had any PMS or mood problems and after that I started suffering from Depression, Anxiety and later I found out I had Bi Polar. My father and I have always thought that there might be a connection and I have recently done some research and have found that other women have had the same side effects.
After I got married I tried a more permanent form of birth control an IUD. It is not used very often in women that haven't had children, but it worked for me. There is no weight gain, but there are a couple of downfalls. Don't quote me because this was a while back but if I remember right you have some spotting at first and then you don't have a period at all. It does hurt a little when they put it in but not to bad and most people keep it in for a while, but I guess you wouldn't have to. Well good luck and I hope we all find a birth control that works for us.

i'm on tri-sprintec right now which is generic ortho-tricyclen and i hate it. I was on alesse before and i was having sex drive issues so i wanted to switch....worst decision ever....i've started gaining weight even though i'm eating right. I'm short so any weight i gain makes me look pregnant...i'm calling my doctor this week to switch back to alesse
one would think that after 50+ years of improving the birth control pill, there would be one that doesn't cause the worst side effect of weight gain
