Frankly, having blood released after or during sex is not normal.
(I was misinformed when a teen, by a sex-ed film in junior high school that had animation showing in slow motion how the semen or sperm is expelled from the man... in a cross-cut diagram. Unfortunately, the annimators chose to depict the shot or pulse of each ejaculation in white (which makes sense) but the cut-away urethra was red. As the camera zoomed in on just the prostate pulsing away in slow motion, and the pulses of white flowing down the diagram, you were left with the distinct impression that during ejaculation, BLOOD alternated with sperm shooting out of the penis. This is NOT true. In fact, they did nothing to show how or where the sperm left the body, nor where the penis was when it happened. A lot of misinformation was left unsaid as a result and rumors ran rampant among the inexperienced and uninformed.
But back to your question. No, any blood being issued from the penis or the male reproductive system is not normal and not correct. It probably is either left over from her period...and is not from your body... OR, it indicates either a minor tear in your foreskin or the rupture of a small blood vessel along the ureathra. In a worst case senario, it might be coming from either the testicle or the prostate, and it's important that you get this checked out.
Just what type of sex are you practicing with your gf? How rough are you? Is it possible that you have scraped or injured yourself or her in this? Or is this more likely just something that dribbles out afterwards?
We'd need more info to be able to do much more than recommend that you visit your family doctor for an exam and a check up. But that's a very good place to start.
Let us know what you decide.

... This time we were quite rough and .....
there was a slight discomfort during the intercourse for a second, whilst performing cowgirl position, when my penis came out her vagina and didn't go back in straight away. Instead awkwardly missed, and its possible bent in such a way to cause the discomfort. ...
It may also help to note we have had sexual intercourse since, and I have also masturbated since with no problems.
Bingo! This provides the additional details that probably explains it.
I would guess that when your penis doubled over, or awkwardly missed, that you bent or compressed the penis in such a way that you popped a small blood vessle. This would account for the small drop of blood. Also, had it been a larger vessle or one of the "inflatable sacks" that give the penis it's rigid erection, you would have seen: 1) Discoloration or bruising, or 2)Dramatic bend or obvious lean to one side, or 3) additional continuing pain, and 4) continued discoloration and bruising obvious for days if not weeks afterwards. (and in that case, you'd be rushing to a doctor or emergency room, cause the "pop" can be audible.
The fact that you've had sex, both masturbation and intercourse since then, without any difficulties leads me to think that it was a minor capillary and not worth worrying about.
Except, that if you engage in such virgous thrusting, particular under the cowgirl position, that you be wary of "missing" and limit how far the stroke goes for fear of a repeat performance... and with more serious result. (Hey, Cowgirl is fine...in fact, a real thrill for both...but you both need to know your limitiation... that is, how far you can move, and how virgorously before you loose it.)
Enjoy!
