I have been on the website for Dr. Theodore Friedman. In comparing pseudo-Cushings to genuine Cushings disease, he mentions supraclavicular fat pads to be one of the positive physical indicators of true Cushings disease rather than pseudo. My own experience on support groups for hypothyroid and Cushings Disease is that those with these fat pads tend to be both. I suspect HPTA axis connection, but I am a patient, not a physician and have no means of researching this.

Those are classic symptoms....I hadasked MANY Drs about the swelling for about a year.....someone finally suggested a dye test and they found the problem! The dr. They are called supraclavicular fat pads and are caused by being hypothyroid or Cushings disease.  In most cases it's hypothyroid condition. Your thyroid labs can very well be NORMAL and a doctor will not treat. Only a functional medicine/holistic doctor will treat you with symptoms of low thyroid but normal labs.  Unfortunately whats normal for some is NOT your personal normal and conventional medicine does not recognize this and will only treat in a cookie-cutter style.

They're called sub clavicular fat pads and are typically a sign of high cortisol levels which can be stress related, pituitary or adrenal. Not sure how to get rid of them, I'm trying to figure it ou, too. High cortisol can cause a lot of fatigue symptoms and weight gain, most everything I've learned through researching and asking for tests. Docs don't seem to want to find out the cause anymore they want to treat the symptoms.

I have lumps on both sides of my neck/collar bone area. The ENT Dr. recognized it as Madelung's disease. Non-drinkers can get it as well. The lumps are non painful.

hi docmex. I am female 50, and have fat both sides of my neck. Face is somewhat swollen too. I have a "bump out" on the back of my neck. I have been sooo tired for months. went to doc my cortisol levels very high! Again, another doc for 2nd opinon. Same thing told me cushings syndrome. I called Mayo clinic. Somehow they listened after I sent results to them. They wanted 24 hour urine-free test and more blood work to fax in. I did that and sending it in today. Keep in mind I am shorting this bcause I had xrays, cat scans, plenty of vials done. My tummy putrudes when I don't eat much at all. I did have cort. shots 2 in my hips not long b4. But my hubby thinks it could be horomone cream I got about 8 months b4 too. Does your wife have horomone cream? Will lyk about Mayo.

I have the same ugly pads in my supraclavicular fossa's. They have been there a couple of years but recently seemed to grow, become hot and tender, making my neck feel kind of congested and uncomfortable. I've been searching for an answer for months, and feel that it must either be thoracic outlet syndrome or the result of excessive cortisol. I have been stressed since childhood so wonder how my adrenals could still be producing excess cortisol, but who knows. My better half is a doctor and he has no idea what they are. I recently started taking HRT in patch form, and then the pads seemed to grow and become inflamed. I'm tired thinking about yet still keep searching for the answer and checking here just in case someone gets anything approaching a definitive answer.

Incidentally, today I decided to take Rhodiola Rosea and some other supplements on the basis that perhaps it is excess cortisol that has caused these pads, and maybe lowering or regulating Cortisol production might offer some respite. Also started taking iodine on the basis that low thyroid function might be contributing to the problem. I have zero energy so if I could improve that to any degree, that would be something.
