First, thank you everyone for taking the time to post so much information. It's given me a lot to think about. This swelling is an edema, a retention of fluid. one way or another all our systems are circulatory, so this retention of fluid must be the blockage of several systems. It may start with one system but all systems in our bodies are connected, so when one begins to slow others are sure to follow. I think of a beaver dam first affecting the river nearest to it but eventually having an impact much farther up stream. My feet and ankles are swollen, too. My kidneys are sluggish. I'm short of breath in spite of quitting smoking 15 months ago. I,m hypothyroid. I began taking medicine for my thyroid 2 months ago. the thyroid is slow to respond but I believe I am feeling better. Did you know hypothyroidism can cause heart problems? So my approach is going to be herbs; for my heart, lymph cleanser, kidney, and thyroid. So far Ive been ingesting an herbal combo for lymph for 3 days and I've experienced less swelling in my feet in ankles. I'll keep posting about my progress.

I have these same gel like swellings. Sometimes they get so large it becomes a bit embarrassing. They never used to hurt, but lately, when I raise my arms it will hurt real bad in that area. Sometimes it will hurt even though I'm doing nothing. I don't if it's time to see a DR now or not?

Please see a "Health Care Provider", M.D., PA or ARNP and ask for a referral to an Endocrinologist. Your "average, everyday" Doc is not familiar with this situation. But with all the Doctors etc. we have been to my wife still has no answers. She began with the 'swelling' above the collarbones, between the neck and shoulder (Trapezius area) in 2004. She is now 57 y/o and has Hypothyroidism, treated with Levothyroxine and continues on Diuretics such as Aldactone (Spironolactone) and Lasix (Furosemide) for the edema in her lower extremities. This past 18 mos. or so she has developed a Very large abdomen despite losing 11 lbs in the past 3 months. She is not seriously overweight but looks 9 months pregnant. She has been seen by numerous Doctors in the U.S. and Mexico. All to no avail. She is now being tested for Cortisol levels. If you go back to 2011-2012 in these posts you can read all of our 'Posts". From Docmex. Very sorry you have this condition as NO ONE has any answers and 'they' just keep running up bills with visits, labs, X-Rays, CAT scans and Ultrasounds. Over 10 years of this and Nothing. She is embarrassed by these "shoulder" pads and tries to 'joke' and call herself; "Danny Trejo". Good Luck, God Bless,

I go to a Pt who suggested I go see my Dr. For my swelling above the clavicle.  I have had this for several yrs. possibly from my neck fusion.  It is getting bigger on the left side and when I raise both arms to make a pony tail, I cut off my oxygen, my face turns reddish purple, and it scares me.  Any of you have this problem?  I will let you know what my Dr. says

The 'swelling' in the area between neck and shoulder seems to be different in different cases. For instance. My wife's 'swelling' is not edema. They are "fat pockets or pads" as diagnosed by CAT scan. One 'odd' part of these 'fat pads' is that they decrease or increase in size and density without apparent cause. However, Heat and Stress do seem to affect them as they increase in size with these 2 factors. Still searching for answers and/or a Health Care Provider who has at least "some idea" of the cause. Keep searching as this seems to be quite rare and just now coming to light.

A relative of mine has the same symptoms and she was told it's a symptom of fibromyalgia. The swelling seems to go up and down.

57 year old female, low thyroid, same swellings. My trapezius muscles are over developed. I have a lot of tension in my shoulders. My fingers get numb easily. When I have pain it's in my neck and shoulders. I use heat to relieve it.

I am experiencing the same thing. I just noticed it today and started searching on here. Yours was the closest thing (gel pack under skin) to my symptoms. ?? I have a Dr. apt on Sept 4th with my primary care doc. I will see what he says.

I had a rash around the neck probably caused by food poisoning or food allergy.  6 months of rash treated with memotazona, then one day the area where the rash was swollens up.  Exactly the same, like gel pads around my neck.  I have been to the doctor, took blood tests, everything comes out normal.  I also took a HIV test to dismiss the possibility and came out negative.  So, why is the base of my neck swollen?  Is it a virus, or edema?  It's been a month since it started, it doesn't hurt, doesn't get any bigger, but it is clearly there and it takes my sleep away.  The doctor will sonn take an ultrasound, but she has dismissed swollen glands, hodging, nog hodgins, lymphomas, etc...  As mentioned, good results on blood tests.
