Did you ever find out what is was, I have swelling on both sides

Same thing! I noticed three months ago the swelling above my collar bone. The left side of my neck and a little on the right side. I have had 25 x-rays of the neck with no issues. I had 2 sets of blood work done and a 24 hour urine test. I went to a orthopedic doctor and a ct scan with and without dye. The doctor has no explaination as to why the swelling is there. No thyroid or any other issues. It is just there. Do not waste your time going to several doctors. Have a CT scan to rule out cancer. Once that is ruled out, it looks like all of us have a freaky swelling. I do not like it but I am healthy otherwise.

I don't know if you still have this or not but my mom had the same symptoms.... Ever doctor told her she was fat even though she only weighed 150 lbs. so she lost weight and the more she lost the bigger the swelling in her neck. She had a small goiter on her thyroid that we checked every year. They said it was benign until this year she started to develop ear pain and neck pain. Doctors told her she would just have to deal with it. I am a nurse and was so frustrated I couldn't help my mom. Finally I demanded a ct of neck. This took a little bit of convincing being all her thyroid blood work was normal but after being nasty and pushy they finally did it.... Thank god they did--- ended up going for biopsy after ct and it was cancer. We are scheduled to have her thyroid removed. I found another patient that had the same problem. She was younger but after having her thyroid removed she lost weight, no longer has diagnosis of Pcis or insulin resistance, fat pads have disappeared even though the surgeon said they wouldn't and now has no neck pain. Get your thyroid checked!

A ct will not rule out cancer. Thyroid cancers are very slow growing. If you r having the fat pads demand a biopsy of your thyroid. My mom thought the same as you. Do the ct rule out cancer deal with the ugly swelling. She did that for 8 yeArs she was perfectly healthy otherwise. This year she noticed she started to have some ear pain and slightly sore throat on and off. We just had the ct that showed her thyroid was ok. Fast foward 6 months. She does have thyroid cancer and it mets to brain. The doctor said looking at the ultrasounds and cts over the year he would have assumed benign rumors and would have never thought cancer. Even the ultrasound he did in the office he said it looks normal to me. He did tell us fat pads are unrelated. We have done the brains surgery and are scheduled to have her thyroid removed. Only a biopsy can tell u if its cancer or not. Don't trust the imaging cause it might cost you your life or at least have u fighting for it as my mom is.

HRT tends to make slow cancers grow. Have them biopsy your thyroid....bloodwork, ct and ultrasounds can me normal.... Push for the biopsy....

me and my sister have been having this problem, yeah it is like a water balloon under skin. and she drink wine, I rarely drink maybe 5 times a year... We both have thyroid disease and have been having problems with our thyroid quit working. I can't take but one kind of thyroid meds which they took off the market I guess because I can't find it anywhere. however, this is on the base of both sides of my neck so don't believe it is actually my thyroid but maybe the thyroid causing it.

I am new to this site, found it while doing a search for my problem.  I too, have the so called "fat" gel like areas in the hollow of my neck, or what used to be the hollow, above my collarbone.  I had pneumonia a few months ago and the doc gave me a steroid shot, breathing treatment and prednisone..my skin on my upper chest, neck and collarbone area turned reddish that night like I had a sunburn and I noticed the "gel" filled areas.  One side was quite large and the other wasn't quite as large.  Days later I started discovering swelling in other areas like near the crease in my armpits, behind my knees and I have 2 small lumps on my jawline on one side, also my hands sometimes swell and turn all red on the palms and my neck has started getting stiff and painful which I figure is caused by the swelling.

My doctor sent me to an ENT after 7 weeks and I too, was told I had fat.  I was furious...I weigh 112 lbs and "fat" doesn't make your skin red!!!!  She said there was NO swelling and she actually laughed at me.  My thyroid quit working several months ago and I had gained about 6 lbs so she decided it was fat....no one gains 6 lbs in their neck!!!!!  I was so mad.

Has anyone actually gotten a viable answer?

My thyroid quit working several months ago, Hypo, I have the same gel type swelling above my collarbone, ENT told me yesterday it was fat, I weigh 112. I wanted to punch her in the face. My skin on my neck and my lower chest is red, an obvious sign of swelling, the ENT laughed at me. I have 2 small lumps along my jaw line and my neck has become painful and getting stiff, I assumed it's from the swelling. The ENT laughed at me and said there is no swelling and that it's fat. Funny it appeared overnight...no one gets fat on their collarbone overnight!!!

Have same thing and throughout my work day seem to enlarge. I do associate it to stress. Have had ultrasound, x-ray, CT Scan to get...all normal. Very frustrating. Will be following in hopes of an answer.

Hi! Did you ever find out what is going on with your neck swelling? Your symptoms sound very much the same as mine. I did have a herniated cervical disc almost 3 years ago as well as a couple of bulging discs and was diagnosed with deteriorating disc disease. At that time, I was getting this same type of swelling in my neck, but I did have a series of cortisone shots to relieve neck and upper back pain that would radiate down my left arm. The shots eventually handled my pain and over several months, the neck swelling subsided. The swelling has returned on day 2 of returning back to work, after being on vacation for 2 1/2 weeks. I am also noticing that my throat feels thick when swallowing. My guess is that it is due to nerve irritation, since it flared as I was doing a lot of repetitive bagging and had to reach with outstretched arms, yesterday. I am a CSR at a local supermarket, so the job does entail a lot of lifting and sometimes reaching while holding weight. My muscles in my upper neck and back are also irritated.
