I quit smoking 8 months ago.
I exercise 5 days a week. Walk 3 kms and then Bench Press, leg Press and Dead Lifts for 40 minutes.
My breathing is better now, but was real bad for the first six months that I quit smoking. When I was smoking I felt good.
I do steam inhalation once every day with some Vicks . It brings out the globs of mucus , and I feel a lot better.
I must give the Hyderogen Peroxide Therapy a try.
Giving up smoking is the best thing I have ever done!

I also feel tight chested at times, but I think for me it is more asthma than anything else. I use an inhaler and it relieves the feeling.
Ive gotta say, after 30 years of smoking the feeling of new life is so great. I am walking more and loving the "new" experience that I once thought I would never experience again.

At 21 I probably felt like you, that the damage was already done and it was too late. I'm now 47 and doing fine. If you stop NOW, I'm convinced you'll live a long and healthy life.
Angel,
At 21 years of age , you are truly invincible! Believe me. I am 62 !
However, this the time to quit smoking.
Do not worry.
You will get better very soon.
Start excercising , or running , if that is what you like. Do some physical activity that induces hard breathing for atleast 45 minutes every day.
God bless !

No one needs to be crude with alarming statements; we lit & smoked each cigarette, knowing the dangers. Maybe not when we were teens or early twenties, but certainly later on in life. Some doctors ensure we're reminded of this with each visit, others work to assist & help us breath more easily & participate with our loved ones, but we certainly don't need others posting negative comments. I hope Dee went to a doctor because some of her breathing issues could definitely be allergy related. Good luck to all & thank you for the opportunity to post; never have before.

Nicotine's action in the body is as a cholinergic receptor. The long and short of it is that nicotine relaxes your intercostal muscles (muscles between the ribs) and makes it easier to breathe. You never notice this while smoking because smoking makes it harder to breath and cancels this effect. (This is also one of the reasons you experience tight chested panic in the first week of quitting).
When you quit, you're left with the damage from smoking but are deprived of the breathing assistance from nicotine. You just need time to heal. Depending upon how much damage was done and your own ability to recover, these symptoms could almost completely go away.

I feel like c**p..allergies, fatigue, etc..but at the same time I already feel so much healthier and feel these symptoms will pass !
I just wanted to add that there are proper ways to breathe and many people are not actually breathing properly. (look it up)
Also, deep breathing in an area with minimal irritants would probably work very well !
Good luck everyone ! Fight for your life everyday !

I quit smoking 8 months ago, in the first mounth I had the same feeling like i was gasping for air. I made a little change in my diet (added lots of oranges and ate more fruits in general) and that feeling dissappeared. Best of luck!

Without being an alarmist, it sounds like you might have the beginnings of Emphysema or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). What happens is that when you smoke, chemicals in the cigarettes paralyze your lungs and you don't realise the damage they are causing. When you quit, the tiny cilia hairs inside your lungs begin to function again and your Emphysema or COPD is brought to the surface.
You can't expect to smoke and get away with it. Smoking causes all kinds of terrible, permanent health issues. Emphysema and COPD are just a couple of them. You can expect that this will be permanent and over time (many many years), it will worsen (as your lungs naturally deteriorate with age). You will likely end up with an oxygen mask around your mouth to be able to do even the simplest of things such as walking.
I know, i'm only 46 - i quit 8 years ago after smoking for 12 years a pack a day (or not even) and that's how i am now.
thats because you are a p***y you f*****g alarmist.
Edward,
Your lungs cannot deteriorate at 42 !
