Additions are not the same. Some are phisical and others are mental and some are just used to relax or even help sleep and whats religion got to do with it. Religion is for the week who can not face reality. Or who need something else to live for.

I have been smoking for about 36 years. Recently started coughing up flem. Around the same time i cut back my smoking. I think my body is adjusting to the lower level of smoking. I have literaly cut my smoking in half. That is cut my smokes in half. I roll my own but only half the size as conventional smokes for about 3 months now. I am slowely trying to cut them out when possible. I wake up with a dry cough and eventualy cough up some very discusting stuff which makes me feel much better. Iam drinking heaps of water about 2-3 litres a day. I hope to eventualy give up .

Hi. The sane feeling happened to me after I quit smoking (smoked off and on for 25 years) - and I got checked for COPD, and it came clean but I felt terrible and certain they had made a mistake. The good news is- that shortness of breath stopped me from cheating and even taking one drag, and after 12 months, it went away. Now at 16 months, I've started jogging and really feel great.

OK, like all of you I am experiencing the same issues with my breathing.  I am also attempting to figure out a cure / therapy to combat these issues.  Before I go into theories let me give you the counter, not cure, for the breathing.  My doctor prescribed the nebulizer and Albuterol.  Take every 4 hours as needed.  I only use when I am gasping for air.  One vial and my breathing is golden.  My experience is it feels like I have bronchitus.  This was also a diagnosis I received from an urgent care doctor.  He sent me through the antibiotics along with the Prednisone. I cured any underlying infections but the breathing was still an issue.  Mines occurs at weird intervals like after dancing to a Xbox game but not after doing heavy yard work for hours.  I do have only one theory for a cure and it involves clearing the lungs of this mucus with exercise.  During a normal day I may cough producing nothing.  When I excercise, take the Xbox dancing, afterwards I coughed up allot of stuff.  I continued this for maybe 45 minutes before I took the breathing treatment with the Penquin.  The nebulizer can be purchased within a range of 30 to 70 dollars.  The albuterol must be prescribed and with insurance was only about 20 bucks.

Thank u, Spikey. U just gave me hope that it will get better. I've smoked since I was 9 yrs old, over 50 yrs. no more than 3 pks a day, no less than 1 & 1/2. I quit n January 2013 & it scared me that a few weeks later, my breathing got much, much worse. Just going 2 the bathroom is hard. I'm looking forward 2 feeling better & hope it will b sooner rather than later. Thank u 4 the encouragement. God Bless You.

I was a 4 pack a day smoker for over 30 years then went down to a pack a day for two years.  I finally quit.  One of the things that helps me with the tightness in my chest and feeling lack of oxygen and also all the mucus, I take a Benadryl and two motrin for the headache.  I also take Mucinex.  After taking the Benadryl in the morning the heaviness in my chest and struggling to breath eases up after about 30 minutes.  Not sure why the Benadryl helps but it does for me.  I deal with the side effects of Benadryl, drowsiness better than suffocating feelings.

Just some ideas.  Hope the might help me.

Quit 8 weeks ago, cold turkey. Smoked for 20+ years. Only two problems remaining are this and insomnia. Glad to see I'm not alone.

It often feels that I can't pull enough air. Also, I've noticed that my sinuses are swollen frequently, which adds to the difficulty breathing. Many times a day I feel like I'm not getting enough and get a little panicky feeling that goes along with it. Uncomfortable stuff.

The breathing stuff seems to be worse during the second month than the first for me, which is confusing. I'd expected to be improving by now, but it sounds like this takes a year to clear up for some.

;-) I agree... it is important NOT TO GET AHEAD OF YOURSELF. Since I quit smoking, I have felt moments like this. It almost feels to me like a withdrawal attack, anxiety. I went to the doctor and they found nothing. I also have no mucas or phlem coming up ~ no chest congestion.

Drink a lot of water. Eat right. Exercise. Sleep. Take vitamins. Use a nasal spray or Saline to keep tissue in sinus moistened. Vapor rub your neck and chest. Also try cough drops that have vapor warmth. A humidifyer will add moisture to air as well.

Calm your breathing - taking breaths IN slowly counting to 5, then OUT slowly counting 5... Take a walk and get some fresh air. It always calms me down and I feel better. Keep yourself busy.

If you feel you can't contol it, then you should go to a doctor and have them check it.

Some of it is mind over matter. I have accepted the fact that it is going to take time to feel better. My body is doing a lot of healing at the moment.

Pamper and be good to yourself... REMIND yourself how awesome you are and that you CAN DO IT!!!

Best of luck....
