I'm currently doing resistence training at an all women's gym. I've been told that if my heartrate goes above 25 beats per 10 sec, then I'm burning muscle and not fat. Is this true? Should I be taming the workout so that my heatbeat is between 20 & 24? I'm 40 years old.

Hi:
I don't know about the numbers game, but I do know that research shows that it is unlikely that you can work to burn fat without losing muscle mass. The trick is to increase your overall muscle mass, which in turn will support your metabolism rate. Perhaps you can work with a trainer at the gym to develop a less rigorous routine, which is more balanced. Circuit training will help you get toned, which means that you will increase your overall (full body) muscle mass. I hope this helps. Let us know how you are doing.
