My child is about to turn one and I am really looking forward to him getting more mobile. I was really hoping that he was going to be able to perform simple tasks in the second year of life, like showing the ability to use tools. My son seems lazy and and not interested in doing much. Is this normal?
Hang on, it isn't exactly clear to me what you mean by using tools, and performing simple tasks. If you are talking about things like tidying up after themselves, and getting their own clothes on, my three year old doesn't do that yet. She can, but doesn't. At a year old, and throughout the second year of life, your baby will probably perfect his walking skills, learn to eat independently if you let him create messes, and enjoy "helping" adults with whatever they are doing. But if you are under the impression they can participate in chores or something, I am afraid I am going to have to disappoint you.

My nephew who will turn 3 in June, is now learning how to put his own plate in the sink, granted if he has not finished what was on his plate, I need to scrape it for him, then he puts it in the sink. He helps me dress him, but he did not get interested in helping with all that until about a two and a half years, so show him what you do, he will pick it up just by watching what you do, I hate to use this mediphore, but there kind of like monkey's they do what they see. So what you do he will when he feels like it basically.
