Hi! I’m 17, and I’m male and I would like to start lifting weights. The thing is that everybody’s talking I shouldn’t bc I haven’t developed yet and that weight lifting could cause growth stunt. Can anybody explain this to me!!!

Yes, hi! It seems that some researchers have shown that heavy weight lifting could speed up the the closing of growth plates before they had a chance to fully develop and by stopping the growth process prematurely, you stunt your growth. But maybe you can check with a doctor or a trainer how much you could be lifting for starters and what sort of exercise would be good for you. At the beginning you should pay attention to proper form and lifting for muscle endurance. If you manage to learn proper techniques you are likely to avoid injuries.

I personally think this is kind of a myth, unless you're taking male hormones (steroids) such as testosterone while in your teenage years lifting weights, then it will stunt your growth. Me and my friends have been lifting weights since age 14 and we continued to grow until like 17-18 years old. It's something that really hasn't been proven, just a theory at this point.
