I have the same problem now. It started when I got drunk a little high a week ago. Can you give me more insight on this?

I read most of the 12 pages of responses.  Here is a summary:

Symptoms:
1. Difficulty breathing, forced breathing
2. Pain in chest
3. Dizziness and disorientation
4. Pins and needles, numbness
5. Heart palpitations
6. Obstruction of airways, heavy congealed breathing
7. Alarm, anxiety, feeling of imminent death, fear in closed places, pretending that everything is fine
8. Sleep Apnea

Interestingly: Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat or abnormal heart rhythm) symptoms include palpitations, dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath and chest discomfort.

Arrhythmia is caused by many things, but in relevance to this thread: electrolyte imbalance (sodium or potassium).
Premature ventricular contractions (PVC) can be caused by too much exercise, too much nicotine, too much caffeine, and high stress.

If you have arrhythmia and difficulty breathing, you need to take these long term steps:
Stop smoking,
Limit drinking,
Reduce caffeine,
moderate your exercise.

I'm not a doctor, but the binge drinking, exercise, and smoking seem to be short circuiting the central nervous system and or heart.  Here are the top ways to reduce symptoms while coming off alcohol:

1. Hot bath or shower
2. Lots of water and gatorade
3. Perhaps an anti-anxiety medication like xanax or klonopin (NOT while drinking - that could kill you)
4. A brisk walk to help you stop thinking about your breathing pattern
5. Perhaps nasal spray or anti-histamine to open your breathing passages
6. Antacid tablets
7. Vitamin B6&12 + an all-around daily supplement.  Additionally Salmon oil is really good for coming off alcohol.
8. Sometimes green tea can be helpful because it raises your PH and de-acidifies your blood. (Make sure you are hydrated before drinking tea, and probably get a DE-caffeinated tea so that you don't speed up your heart rate)

Good luck people.  SIncerely, marZ

I am convinced its a panic attack as well ... one of the major symptoms of alcohol withdrawal ( since we all are experiencing that from our heaving drinking ) is anxiety, guilt, shame etc ... the severe dehydration from excessive drinking is probably also a major contributor I think ... I have gotten sever muscle cramps in my face or chest during withdrawal which I am convinced come from dehydration.

This is my first experience with this ( Im a 40 year old who works out a lot, everyday actually ) and this will be my slap in the face to stop drinking .. its scary to think your body isnt working right .. I breathe completely normal when I don't think about it, or get distracted with another task, but like reading this thread does, when I start thinking about it the breathing trouble starts RIGHT back up - that HAS to be anxiety ...

Great post Marz.,

All of those things have helped in the past. Will mention that Arrythmia next time round docs.

If i have Gatorade or Sando K (same potassium content as one banana) first thing the morning after drinking i NEVER get any of the symptoms.

Drinker and smoker for 14 years but its only in the last year, at 28, that the issues started up

Found this thread from Google. I suffer from all the symptoms most are having (chest pain, shortness of breath, tunnel vision, tingling in hands, feeling of impending death). I drank heavily yesterday and started having the symptoms at around 3am. I couldnt sleep so I googled my symptons and found this. I ate a banana and felt better within 15 minutes. I was like "Wow, I have been dealing with this for two years and could have stopped it with one banana!" I am also drinking some poweraid too. Thank you all for all your great information.

Good article. I'm going through withdrawl right now and have been having panic attacks all day. I'm out of town on business and feel very alone and terrified. Reading these articles has helped to calm me, knowing that I'm not dying and I'm not the first

As a recovering alcoholic , I have experienced these pains in the chest , the shallow breathing and the heavy cough (more of a dry heave), and for me the most frightening the heavy liver feeling like your right side is heavier than the left (In the stomach area. (To add some more; anxiety, jumpiness, sweating, shakiness when holding small instruments like cutlery or pens...) yes these are all the joys of active alcoholism and with drawl symptoms! They get worse over time, and they only go away with abstinence from alcohol...but the scary trap of it all is they go away quickest when you drink again...but DON"t do that cause that it how the disease of alcoholism works and the way it progresses...you will feel relief when you drink but your only exasperating the underling problem.
Hope this helps!

Hey all, hope people are still posting here.

So for the last few days I drank heavier than usual due to being with friends and drinking a lot. I don't really have a drinking problem but I do drink more at times than others. Anyway, today I have had an unbearable burning pain around my upper stomach, and I am certain this is due to the alcohol consumption. However, I am wondering where this likely comes from; acid reflux, gastritis, cancer? I have had Acid Reflux all my life (only 23 but it runs in my family), long before I started drinking, so it's hard to determine if this pain is from the AR or something else.

I understand abstinence is the only way, and I plan to not drink like this by habit, but I want to know what I can do to help the pain while so I can at least go to sleep. I do not have Tums or Peptol Bismol or anything like that; ideas on home remedies are appreciated. Thanks.

I feel like im every single person who wrote on this  discussion wrapped into one!!! I can not believe how many people there are who are experiencing the EXACT same thing. It does make me feel better im not the only one. I wont go into too much detail but i'll tell you how it started with me and maybe it will give us a little more insight about this condition.

Im 26. Been drinking since 17.

Drank heavily throughout Uni. Ever since its usually a heavy binge ever other weekend or a special event.

Dont smoke. In fit condition, go gym almost everyday. Do weights and cardio.

Never experianced anything like this before.

So, 6 months ago had a 2 day drinking binge in London. On the second night, we went to a BBQ place and I ate the hottest diablo wings ive ever eaten in my life. Next day I woke up and my throat/chest felt horrible. Couldnt breathe properly nor could I eat. That lasted almost a week.

2 months ago, we all went on a mates stag in Las Vegas. Obviously drank like a fish from the moment we woke up and slept no more than 3-4 hours sleep a night. Beer, vodka, tequila, you name it! Anywho, the 4th evening after eating junk food with beers I began feeling upset, tired and depressed. Thought maybe Im just tired so went back to the room. I DIDNT LEAVE THE ROOM FOR 2 DAYS. Thats when it happened. I felt my heart beating through my shirt. Like a million beats. I was sweating and shaking! Swollen trachea. Extremely tired. Thought it was my time. I was so tired but couldnt even sleep. Every time I nodded off, I would forget to breathe and would wake up desperate for air. I even rang the hotel reception and asked for their doctor to come up, but they didnt have one. Couldnt eat and or even drink water. That same throat feeling happened also from 6 months ago (which after reading your comments think its acid reflux). I promisied myself I'd detox for 6 months as the experiance was so scary. I even had an ECG/blood tests done at the hospital and it all came back completely clear!

Just got back from Spain, friend just got married. Same thing just happened. After 4 days of boozing hard all day and night, woke up, and that afternoon, started suffering with the horrible breathing difficulty. I even tried comparing my heart beat with my friend and he just laughed. I thought maybe I'm over reacting but just googled this and read your comments and realised its worth taking seriously. I have to keep taking deep breaths even now to feel like im actually breathing.

From what everyone has said clearly this problem is mostly related to alchohol. Coffee may also effect some people. I thought a tea and coffee would make me feel better yesterday, i was wrong. I know I have to stop drinking the way I do, but are there any other suggestions or tips to deal with anxiety?

Thoroughly appreciate everyones comments!!

This thread now has a mixture of problems in it, the ones suffering from sweats, burning sesnsations ect are all panick attacks and indigestion/Heart burn.

Some of us who have this reaction to alcohol/hangover get the shortness or breath, slushy feeling inside, light headed and feel like your heart isnt beating quite right have something different.

Its an unknown imbalance in your body caused by poision ie alcohol mass intake, this doesnt happen after 2 or 3 drinks it happens after several.
The combination of the poison, electrolyte imbalance AND the effect on your hearts muscles and electric impulses cause this condition.
it could be dangerous and is classed as benign unless your heart stops then you are declared as having alcohol related SADS.

Be careful, thats all i can say, your body is telling you something is wrong so listen to it.

dont binge drink, drink water inbetween pints, eat if you can after one or two drinks and dont mix.

when you get home hydrate well, eat a bannana and something with substance.

Hi

I am 51 and have been drinking fairly heavily for over 30 years. In the past 5 yrs or so ive started to get the exact same symptoms, The breathing thing-where you have to force yourself to breathe is very worrying.

Im certain its to do with alchohol and dehyrdration combined. I know this now because i never get the symptoms once ive been working Offshore for a few days ( no alchohol allowed ) and now having read that you guys are getting the same. If you can remember to drink a litre of water at the end of your drinking session that helps but sadly it looks like we are all gonna have to cut down or cut out the drinking!
