What you are all describing is absolutely panic/anxiety. You don't have to experience anxiety on a regular basis to experience these symptoms. Your body is detoxing and is not used to these "withdrawal" symptoms. Alcohol thins the blood, thus, your heart is working overtime to return your circulatory system to its normal state. These symptoms may be hightened by the "scariness" of the feelings you're experiencing--so if you feel like you're having a heart attack, you know that it is (usually) a full blown panick attack.
To those who say anxiety meds don't help, this can be pretty normal. Sometimes we build up a tolerance to the meds or we build the panic up so much that it doesn't always work.
If you google any of the terms you have described -- shortness of breath (that feeling like you have to keep breathing deeply, but never getting a full breath... sometimes people will associate trying to burp to relieve the lungs of extra air, etc), chest pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, fatigue, acid reflux, heart pounding (including "skipping a beat" or heart palpitations), difficulty swallowing, and all the rest, will point you to panic! Good news because this usually isn't a serious medical issue, but bad news because it is a seriously scary situation to be in, regardless how many times it's happened. It's not uncommon to feel like you're dying or going crazy. Try to breath deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth slowly. Also drink plenty of water to help with the dehydrating effects of alcohol and avoid caffeinated beverages the next day.
It can also get complicated if you begin to drink again to relieve yourself of the anxiety cause by drinking... vicious cycle.
Also, for those of you experiencing shortness of breath (or "chronic sigh syndrome" not a medical term, but true!), try sticking your finger between your lips and taking a deep breath in with the air coming in around your finger. This will usually help you get that gratifying breath you are looking for.
As someone who has been suffering from this for 4 years, I hope that this helps. I know it's frustrating, and you just want to get an EKG and a COMPLETE PHYSICAL to calm your mind--but, try to rest assured--this is obviously very common, and you are NOT alone! :-)

Wow......This made me feel better but don't know if we have had any real remedies. I got sick after a night of drinking last year (binge drinking like all of us trained in college to do). I'm 40 now but we have kept the same habits.......professionals now but when we do go out it's a beers and shots until we are very drunk.......only occasionally but definitely over indulging.
Anyway, I caught a sinus infection then had the shortness of breath, cough, clearing throat with nothing to clear, couldn't breath deep enough to satify, etc...lasted 2 weeks after the cold went away 1 year ago.
Recently, had a night out and wound up in emergency.....of corse everything came back normal and anxiety was the diagnosis. My breathing and coughing has been bad on and off for 1 month now. NO SMOKING!!! NO DRINKING!!! Now it won't go away and I'm getting nervous.
I am a realtor and have a ton of stress though. I wake up ok then 1 hour after the slight cough will start then progressively it gets worse.
What the freak is going on????? I'm so uncomfortable and going crazy. It is comforting to know I am not alone and we are not dying but sh*t already!!! Enough already. Let's figure this out. The stories are great but I need answers. The doctors say stress but I am having attacks when I am completely relaxed.
Some said acid reflux but I've been on the prilosec for a week and no good yet.
I just read something on B-vitamin diffeciency which can be cause by excessive alcohol consuption and leads to viral things that inflames the throat/esophogus. It said to eat liver or liver oil pills, raw sunflower seeds, grape nuts (no sugar) use molases, and wheat germ. No vitamin B pill....said it might getv worst with those.
I don't know but I'll try anything....so uncomfortable and work is becoming difficult.
Let's quit telling our stories and figure this out!!! There is enogh of us to try different things and report back. I will try an ENT this week and report back and well as the B vitamin rich foods.
Someone else try something else and report back. I will even start a support group because I know how scary this is. I am in Chicago if anyone would like to help.
Talk to doctors and report back. Common diagnosis so far are anxiety, acid reflux, dehydration, b vitamin deficency. It seems to be tied to booze. Let's get proactive and figure this out!!!! I will report back after my ENT appointment and B vitamin foods.
Thanks gang!!! We can beat this if we post solutions more than stories. or get a doctor to read these posts and post something. Anyone have a ENT or Bronchial doctor in the family?????
Hang in there guys!! I'm not giving up!!!

First, to Liz3001, THANK YOU. I'm the person on page 3 who initially thought it was acid reflux, then changed my post to panic attacks. Your reassurance helps immensely.
To reguy40:
I'm with ya. I still have CHRONIC shortness of breath. Absolutely zero other symptoms, but the breathing thing is controlling my life. I'm at week 5 now. That being said, I just got back from two weeks of doctors visits trying to get this figured out. I was immediately put on Klonopin two to three times a day (like Xanax or Valium), and it does help some. They also, despite my hesitation, put me on an anti-depressant. They said it's not because I'm depressed, it's just to level out the chemical imbalance (serotonin, etc). I have not had a panic attack since starting the meds 8 days ago, and I HAVE been out drinking once. The next day the breathing was worse, but no attack. Good news to me.
I'm taking it SLOWLY right now, and I'm having good days and bad days, but the breathing issue is still with me 24/7. Sometimes I feel 95%, sometimes 70%, but not since this started have I felt 100%. It is starting to look like it's getting a LITTLE bit better day by day. I'll have two good days, think I'm over it, then for no apparent reason, a bad day that ruins everything. Then a good day, etc, etc, etc.
The only thing I can suggest is to go to your general practitioner and let him know what's going on. It IS anxiety, even if you don't feel anxious, and it hits at the strangest times. Sometimes I'll be totally relaxed and watching a movie, and BAM, it hits me. That's common. Tell your doc you're having what you believe are panic attacks and anxiety issues, and he'll proscribe you one of three things. Valium, Klonopin, or Xanax. I HIGHLY recommend NOT TAKING XANAX. It's highly addictive, it's half life sucks (meaning it doesn't last long) and you'll just want to keep popping them all day. More and more docs are refusing to prescribe xanax for that very reason. Klonopin is the way to go. Try and stay active, but calm. You need to burn off that excess adrenaline that can lead to anxiety throughout the day.
I'm no doc or anything, just another guy trying to get through this. I'll keep checking here every couple of days to let you know how it's going for me. Let me know if you want my personal email if you need anything else.
cheers, and stick with it

Ryan & Emily,
Thanks for the replies Ryan & Emily. I am still not 100% convinced it's anxiety because of the drinking factor. It has only occurred after a night out of drinking for me anyway. This time it is just not going away like last time. I'm down to a cough like clearing my throat alot.
Emily.....hang in there ....we know what you are going through but it usually passes. I have noticed that if I stay hydrated and drink an butt load of water 6-8 large glasses a day .....it seems to get better (and I'm taking prilosec just in case because I have been diagnosed with severe acid reflux). I do believe that the shortness of breath did and does make me panic and have anxiety but I'm not sure it is the catalyst.
I do think we need to distinguish between symptoms after drinking and symtoms occuring without drinking. Like I have had no numbness and some people have this without a night out drinking .
This week I am speaking to my ENT who is brilliant .....Emily....I know it's hard to drink water when you feel out of breath but it really worked for me. As Ryan also said it also helped me to go for a long walk and sweat a bit.
We need a doctor to look at these post and give us possible solutions.....I will see if I can contact this site and see if they can have someone review this topic. 4 pages of post and no solution!!!! On the home page there is an "ask a doctor" button so why can't I alert them to this whole post.
This is an epidemic it seems!!! Stay with me here and will figure this out.
Ryan.....I don't feel the valium made it that much better but it did relax me and make me very tired. I need more emperical evidence and if you go back and read a lot of the other posts ......alot say that anxiety meds did not help.
Thanks for your support guys.....keep posting. All your input is appreciated. Be proactive with me. I'm not done just yet.
Emily.....the first week is rough but it will get better.......no drinking or smoking and stay hydrated......anxiety meds do helps some also. '
Stay tuned!!!!

i get this too, its like a tightness in the right side of my chest. hurts when i breathe, difficult to exersice because of it. it goes away in like three days
i used to think it was because of alcohol. but i recently discovered what i believe was causing my chest pain, as well as maybe some of yours
you also believe its the alcohol? well 2 nights ago i took CCC, ended up puking like 3 times. i awoke the next day to later on realize that i have the same chest pain as when i drink! its because of vomiting excessively. when you throw up your body is rejecting something, it doesnt want to throw up. so naturally it causes a stress on the muscles used for throwing up thus making them sore the next day
lol i wonder if you can train your puking muscles like a bicep. so that after it gets used its not sore :-P

It's crazy this many people are having the same problem as me. I have the same symptoms as everybody on here, all day after I drink I can barely catch a breathe to save my life, I probably have anxiety, Ill sweat alot, breathing gets worse when I eat, lightheaded, I have to stand or walk around or i feel like im going to pass out or have a heart attack, my heart has sharp pains, tingley arms, at night i'm so tired but I cant sleep because I keep breathing hard. Yes I went to the doc and of course they said stress, even had an ekg monitor with no bad results, took myself to the hospital and they took blood and a buncha of tests and nothing came back, and I can tell that its getting way worse, and people at work are noticing somethings wrong with me and I just have to keep going about my day breathing deep and not satisfied, I can feel my heart flutter and skip beats.......I'm going crazy and something has to be done but I dont know what to do when doc says i'm fine when clearly I am far from fine, I feel closer to death than I do alive about everyday. I'm preety much in constant suffering and I feel that any moment soon I'm just going to die. I just turned 29 and I would like to keep turning ages but its hard right now with this whatever it is to see too much more of a future(not in a suicidal way, I would never do that) . I know that sounds messed up but thats what I think about all the time since this started to escalate. I even started imagining what my funeral would be like.....all because of this ridiculous breathing problem along with all the others.
I hope we all find help soon because I know how you all feel, please let me know if better remedies come up......

Hello i have the same problems been like it now for about 7 years i've lost count the amount of times i've ended up at a&e having ecg's and blood tests! Always coming back clear! I have been told its gerd but don't believe that as one of the posters above says it only ever happens the following night after drinking heavily! Never after eatting certain foods! Anyone round anyway to ease the pain yet? I've had the chest pain and shortness of breath for 2 days now! One thing that I have found that seems to help is a hot bath or shower anyone else found this?

I too have all the same symptoms here so I don't need to tell my story, but I was referred to a lung specialist when I went to see my general practice doctor for more testing. I will see him in the next week or two, so I will post back on what they say.
In the meantime it sounds like trying to rehydrate yourself is a solution.

Wow.....to the person who just replied......please let us know what the lung specialist says. That is the information we have all been waiting for. Please do not forget to re-post what you find out!!!! We would all be very grateful. Thanx :-D
To everyone else who follows this post. I have only been told over and over that it is anxiety and GERD (form of acid reflux). So I have done a bit of testing and I even went out and had some drinks to see what happens. I drank water between every drink and pounded water when I got home......slight cough in the morning and little to no hangover......interesting right????
I first got my breathing under control by relaxing and not thinking I was dying and working myself up into a frenzy. I took a valium/xanax prescribed by my doctor to slow my breathing and began to hydrate. Loads of water and gatorade. It's uncomfortable to drink while your breathing is labored but I forced myself to drink. Hot shower/bath worked also to slow the breathing like Barry said.
The woman who posted putting your finger between your lips while inhaling to get a satisfying breath.....that worked!!! I than began to take my prilosec daily and not eat any acid producing foods (nothing carbonated, no mint, chocolate, tomato, etc...) and no eating at night.
Here is my educated guess with a ton of reading......it is a combonation of three things. First the drinking.....heavy drinking causes severe dehydration and alcohol withdrawl which can effect your breathing the next day. Even if you only went out drinking one night.....over 5 drinks can cause alcohol withdrawl symtoms and of course.....dehydration and very dry throats.
Second....a night of heavy drinking with or without food at night causes severe acid reflux.....enough for the alcohol/acid to burn and irritate the esophogus which can affect breathing and chest pains. Snoring while drunk even makes the throat irritation worst. Alcohol cause acid reflux .....especially beer. Think about it....beer burbs....suds coming up your throat....thats alcohol and an irritant to the throat passages.
Then we wake up with the breathing problem or chest pains and we begin to panic because of the uncomfortable breathing which sends us into a panic attack. The breathing stays with us because we feel like we are dying and we get scared thus causing major anxiety.
Pacing, dwelling, questioning our mortality, promising not to drink sends us into what we all know is an anxiety attack but I think the catalyst was the heavy drinking....with acid reflux.....alcohol withdrawl.....and top it off with an anxiety attack.
There is know doubt in my mind that it starts phsyical (irritating our wind passages somehow) and gets worse due to mental trauma.
I have been watching my acid reflux, staying very hydrated, not eating at night, and watching the foods that cause acid reflux. It took a couple of weeks but I slowly started getting better and my symtoms are gone for now. I even had some drinks (not recommended) and avoided the shortness of breath by staying hydrated throughout the evening. I had a cough for a few days but that went away also by staying aware of what could irriatate my throat.
Prilosec, water/gatorade, watching food and drink that could irritate the throat, and rest helped me. Staying calm is also very important whether using a sedative prescribed by a doctor or something that relaxes you (bath or sun). Then let your airways heal and stay moist.
It could be different for everyone but for those of you who like to go out drinking every now and then....... I think this is the cause.
If there is a medical term or cure for this ailment then maybe the lung specialist person can shed some light (please lord let them find a solution). If we stick with this and keep eachother informed we can find some answers.
I'll keep posting if you will. You are not alone.....remember that!!!!

I would like to get a doc friend to look at this thread. I too
Have been experiencing the same probs as
Many of you and am baffled as to why it is happening to us, but just not many others.
I will admit I do drink a lot and it is always binging, often these symptoms
Only arrive for me after evening three of drinking. And recently
They haven't been as strong as before- first tine I was on a train and literally
Thought I was about to die. Anyway, I have noticed some patterns reading this so think before
I put it to a doc we should all answer some standard questions...
Sex- male
Age- 27
Age of first exerience of symptoms- 24
Symptoms- shortness of breath, cannot fall asleep, tight chest, anxiety
Exercise- yes, v regular (I notice many say this)
Type of excercise- mainly cardio and some strength
When do symptoms normally occur- for me
Normally on afternoon or early evening after three consecutive
Nights of relatively heavy drinking (ie 4 pint - 10 pint per
Night.
Symptoms ever led to doc or hospital visit, if so what was diagnosis-
Never visited doc
Let's see if any patterns emerge guys. Sorrya
