Well, I am feeling a hell of a lot better now that I am reading these posts which relate EXACTLY to my experience. 4 nights ago, I realized I had not taken the Doxycycline pill I am prescribed, and took it w/out water, and laid down and fell asleep right away. I have extreme feelings of heartburn, burning in my esophagus, it's painful to breathe after swallowing food or water, its painful to swallow anything, and I barely have an appetite, even though I have eaten barely a thing in the past 4 days. My doctor sent me to the ER today, but they simply prescribed me another pill, a liquid medicine, and told me to continue with the Doxycycline (though I am terrified of it now). After 10 days they say it should be better. My main worries now, are that I am not getting enough fluids since it is too painful to drink water, and that I am not getting enough nutrients from my lack of appetite and my fear of eating because of the pain.

Okay so the exact same thing you all have been saying just happened to me after taking doxycycline with little water 5 days ago except it seems to be getting worse.  The very first day felt like something was stuck in my lower esophagus and I had severe heartburn.  Everyday since it has been really painful to swallow and it just keeps getting worse.  Right now even just sitting here without eating, my chest feels crampy and it hurts when I breath in.  Anything help to relieve the pain?  I know people said it goes away after a couple weeks but should I see my doctor anyway?

Hello there,
I too am having severe chest pains from swallowing anything (food or drink) after taking Doxycycline with not enough water at night. Is ANYONE feeling better after a week or two? It's been a week for me and i still feel like i'm going to die when I swallow anything from the pain.

This happens when you take a pill without sufficient or any water. I took Doxycycline two days ago without any water and went to bed. I woke up in the morning with what felt like heartburn and some foreign object stuck in my throat. I took some Tums but it had no effect. Hurts when I eat or drink but I still do it anyways. The doctor said that sometimes the pill can get stuck in your throat and burn a hole through your esophagus if it stays there too long so try and get it treated. The doctor may give you liquid medication that coats your throat with a numbing agent and helps protect your esophagus and helps it heal. I don't think its too serious and it should go away on its own. However, if the pill is still stuck in your throat and left there for several weeks, it can break down the tissue in your esophagus and cause a lot of damage.  Usually, the pill goes down but you will still feel the effects of it sticking in your throat. The pain right now isn't that bad but it does make eating uncomfortable which is the part I'm most upset about.

I have been having the racing heart and been dizzy, also shortness of breathe and feeling like passing out. Not to mention the chest pain. I have only taking this medication one time and stopped been 3 days and I feel worse.

I took Doxycycline my 1st pill with no water in the morning and same thing is happening to me, 1st day I had severe chest pain. Today is only the 2nd day but the chest pain is gone however there are times where I feel this awkwardness in my chest and I have these faint burps as if my body is preparing to puke.
Drinking is alright, but eating hurts a lot (****), I can feel every single bite go down.
I stopped the pills, I'm gonna ask the doctor 2morrow if it's alright to continue the pills (with lots of water of course).
Did anyone continue the pills after the symptoms?

I am suffering like the rest of you. I took this damn antibiotic without water and woke up a couple of hours later with what felt like something stuck in my chest. I was so miserable. I could not sleep.Very painful, bad acid, burping, and coughing. I foolishly thought it was the food that I ate the night before - a baked potato. So I took another doxycycline again last night, and I barely can eat. This antibotic is horrible and is on my "allergy" list along with penicillin.

did you ever experience soreness in unusual places in body from taking doxycycline?

I am going through the same thing now! This site totally helped me diagnose myself. I also thought I was having heartburn from Cajun food five days ago! I did have soreness on other parts of my body to answer your question ^ It is gone today, day five. I was horribly sore days three and four to the point of just hating the whole day. I called my dermatologist today and she never called me back so I am assuming it isn't urgent. I will continue to take the medicine because it helps my skin so much, but now I know to always take it with a large glass of water and wait an hour to go to bed!

I have been taking doxycyline and got severe chest pain. It felt like the pill was still stuck in my throat and the pain got progressively worse over the next 5 days to the point where it was very difficult to swallow food or water. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with esophagitis. The doxycycline can cause this so I would recommend not taking it if you don't have to. I am taking Nexium for 2 weeks and was told it should eventually heal on it's own. I need to stay away from citrus, coffee, tomato sauce and anything that causes more acid in the stomach. See your doctor because if it's severe enough they may need to do more than just prescribing ant-acids.

Hi, the same thing happened to me 12 years ago, practically crippled me and i have not recovered 100%. I spent close to 20,000 in doctor bills, would gladly be a part of a class action suit!

Aw I am so sorry you are having so much pain still. I was fortunate and my pain did go away after a week and a half. I was miserable until the one week mark and then it was much better a couple days later. I did take tums but was unable to eat real food also. Your best bet is to see what your doctor says. Some people have more damage than others so it is hard to completely compare circumstances.
