doxy prescribed for acne, like so many others. After 6 weeks, I too had the feeling that something was stuck in my throat, trouble swallowing and heartburn. The pain went on for 3 days and by the 4th day I couldn't stand it. Kept me up all night long. Finally went to the ER in the morning. ER docs knew as soon as I said doxycycline what the problem was. Sent me to the GI specialist who did an endoscopy. Of course it was normal, so he gave me a prescription for the acid and had me follow up with an ENT. ENT did a laryngoscope. Said my throat was very swollen and irritated. Diagnosed me with Laryngopharangeal reflux (LPR) due to doxycycline. He gave me a prescription for dexilanT and a GI reflux diet. After about 4 days it was much better but I am now starting to feel That lump in my throat again. From what I've read on several different sites, people suffer with this for varying periods. Sadly, many people suffer a long time with this. I find it absurd that doctors and pharmacists don't give more warning to patients taking the drug. Especially, the dermatologist who are prescribing the drug regularly for acne!!!
I was prescribed this drug for acne. I started getting heartburn on the second day. The pain was so severe that I couldn't even take a sip of water. I became very dehydrated, couldn't sleep, couldn't eat and I constantly felt like I was going to either burp or vomit. I couldn't understand why I was suddenly getting heartburn when I had never experienced it in my life. I started doing research on the internet and learned that this is a common side effect of doxycycline. I am supposed to be continuing this drug but I will certainly stop taking it now. I wonder how long this heartburn will last? I honestly don't know how many more days I can cope with it. All the usual pharmacy drugs such as gaviscon do not work for me at all. The pain is unbearable. Today I went to the Doctor with my symptoms (not knowing what was causing them) and he prescribed me omeprazold (proton pump inhibitor) that is supposed to suppress my body from making excessive acid. I took my first table of Omeprazole about 6 hours ago but still no relief. How terrible that nobody warns you that this drug can do this to you!
I've been on two 5 month courses of Doxy, and this has happened to me about three times now; once was way worse than the others and went away after about two weeks. It does get better! I find cold things to help soothe it, like smoothies or ice cream, but eaten in really small bites so it doesn't feel like there is too much pressure when you swallow.
half wat through a 14 day course of Doxycycline gel caps (which appear to stick more frequesntly than the pill form) i woke with bad heartburn etc. a day after stopping the pills I had excruciating pain in two descrete spots so I assume ulcers and not simple inflamation as I was initially advised. I found this which explains exactly my situation. Im going in today to my PCP in the hopes of getting something to speed the recovery, then desl with how to complete the interrupted course of Doxy.

Forgot to mention, ive been forcing myself to sleep as many hours as possible as that is when the body heals itself which is apparently the solution here.
My PCP just told me to take 20mg Omeprazole (Prilosec) 1/2 hour before breakfast and dinner, eat small meals and get a lot of rest. She said to use antacid only if i get heartburn pain.
It's in the same aisle as antacids.
It shuts off the acid ducts in your stomach and that helps the pain ALOT. Took about an hour to kick in. Made it bearable. OMEPRAZOLE - only thing That helped, which is a good thing cause I was going to lose my mind.
