hi, i am on methadone, which is very similar to suboxone and used for the same thing. i have also been suffering from severe constipation the last year or so even though i have been on the meds for 2.5 years. any medicine like this can affect your bowel movements, but i agree, it shouldnt stop you from living a normal life. and i feel for you about the dr not wanting to perscribe you any pain meds. maybe try going to a dr and not mentioning the suboxone because some drs have a stigma in their head about people on those kinds of meds. and dont focus so much on the pain, but getting results. make sure your dr knows that you cannot poop. that no matter what, you cannot do it, no matter how much you eat, etc.... be serious with them, but also consider their standpoint they have to make sure that the tests they are about to perform are justified, and I KNOW THEY ARE, just make them keep testing and keep testing until you find a solution. im sorry we have to go thru this. i hope we all find a solution that we can spread across the internet to help all the people that are experiencing the same thing, but afraid to talk about it.

All I can say is I know what you go through because I've been dealing with this c**p for a few years now. I was diagnosed with diverticulitis in 2003 and have been battling constipation, stomach pain, and back pain ever since. Instead of giving you my life story, I'll just tell you what works for me. First thing I did was realize the problem was in my stomach or upper part of the digestive system because an enema won't do sh*t for me! I prefer to take about 12ozs of prune juice and drink mass amounts of water. Once the food that is backed up starts to move you may experience a few hours of discomfort but the reward is well worth it. In some cases you may feel bad longer but it just depends how backed up you are. I used to sh*t like a swiss train but after being perscribed pain meds for years due to my screwed up spine, some which have been taken off the market, it's been hell at times being weak and constipated all the time. BTW, I've recently had some luck with making a smoothie each morning. I think it's the yogurt that's been helping but sometimes I have to resort back to prune juice, prayer, and lots of water. Also, if you have medical benefits, go get a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. It can never hurt to tell a specialist exactly what your symptoms are as stated above. Good luck!

Treating pain is very tricky with gi problems especially being stopped up. This is because a big side effect of most of the good pain meds only further the constipation. I don't think the doctors are ignoring as much as not wanting you to be more impacted. Seeing the GI is the best thing you can do, as ER is really limited to diagnosing acute conditions such as obstruction and diverticulitis.

I would suggest trying to do a clear liquid fast for 7 days to allow you intestines to recuperate and repair itself. Then, do a full liquid diet from day 7 to day 14 (still no dairy, but you can try to do Enlive or Ensure, or other liquid proteins). Then for day 14 to day 21, include soft foods such as mash potatoes, ensure pudding, etc... I would do one enema a week during this process. If you have no other issues (such as tumors or blockage, etc...) This should help clear your system. I would also recommend a change in diet moving forward to help with these bowel issues. Preferably a vegan diet would be best, but if not possible, try to limit dairy products, try a gluten-free diet, and limit red meat as much as possible. Hope you feel better soon.

Have you tried MiraLAX. My dad came home from the hospital and was having all kinds of intestinal problems, stopped up like you wouldn't believe, bowel motility was gone, partially obstructed because of codiene containing pain medications. He tried all kinds of stuff-senna, regular laxatives, suppositories, even Epsom salts the nurse had suggested - with no results. Then the doctor suggested MiraLAX and he said it worked great and no problems since. Hope this helps. I have not seen this suggestion before. The ingredient in MiraLAX is similar to the ingredients in the medications they give you before a colonoscopy to CLEAN YOU OUT. It seemed to work for my dad like that.

I actually just got out of the hospital for this. I have an auto immune disease, gastroparesis, as well as severe constipation. Whether it works together or not is beyond me. Anyway I don't go to the bathroom...and if I do they are maybe a few little round balls that come out. I've been complaining for months about this and no one will help nor give me any answers. They have put me on several medications for motility (reglan, domperidone, rifaximin, etc.) None which worked. They continued to tell me that all I would need is Miralax to help move things along. I take this everyday and the only thing it does to me is makes my stomach hurt more than it already does and makes me gassy. Everytime I eat or drink anything I get horrible nausea and stomach pains under my ribcage and down the sides of my stomach and sometimes cramplike pains too. My back hurts. I always have a headache. There seems to be no help in site. I was in the hospital for thanksgiving because the drs gave me citrate magnesium and golytle which I was told would make me run to the bathroom and be there for hours. Well...that didn't happen so I was sent to the er where the er dr told me that he didn't know what to do so he was going to send me home with another laxative. My regular dr had to call to speak to him then he decided to admit me. At that point my gi dr told me I was going to go in for a lower gi xray which is so uncomfortable and degrating where they found nothing but how to make me cry. Well after that I was going for sure...they made me drink more golytle and the following morning I had a colonoscopy where they again found nothing but an ulcer which they told me nothing about like how to get rid of it how to prevent it etc, they also did biopsies which im still waiting on results. I know how frustrating it is but know your not alone and we are all looking for answers. If you get any please let us know. Good luck.

Ok hello i am 12 years old and have been dealing wth chronic constipation all my life. I know a few medications that will help. Of corse Miralax i have been taking since i was 3. You need to use it frequent to work effectively. Also there is metamucil+laxitive=explosive diareahha. And there is Colace. I am using this right now but it doesnt seem to work yet, but its worth a try. More advice is never give up hope. If u go a little bit each day u will survive. just keep trying. If your constipation lasts for 6 months see a doctor. Now regular doctors may give you like 3 enemas, but a gastro will probably give you nothing or 1 enema thts not painful. And that is all my advice but i have to say right now im constipated, on my period, and have clogged sinuses and im not seeing a doc lol. This just shows never give up hope

Hi everyone I just want to share my experience and a possible long term SOLUTION for this problem. Yes constipation has always been my problem since i was a kid. the worst episode i had was just February this year (2011) I was constipated for almost 3 weeks.. I tried everything. I exercised, ate fruits and veggies, tried different herbal teas, laxatives, softeners and nothing worked. I went to the doctor and prescribed me something that i'm already using at double dose.. at the third week i was so constipated that i barely ate anything. then i found something that really helped me a lot.. its a food suppliment that a friend shared to me. he didnt know that i had that kind of problem before. he just shared to me what the product is all about so i took it and it really helped me.. now I get regular bowel movements every morning and sometimes have a 2nd round in the afternoon! I'm so thankful because of this! I can enjoy doing other things again. Ive read most stories here and I can relate to almost all of them.. Hello to all. I am a fourth year student doctor and i came across this page. bouts of stress, lack of exercise, bad eating habits can all  change 'normal' bodily habits. my first advice for those that are constipated, is to stop taking SUBOXONE. This is an opiate drug similar to morphine and is given to people for heroin withdrawal. MAJOR SIDE EFFECT OF OPIATES=CONSTIPATION hence they emphasize u drink 6-8glasses of water with it. If u have a chronic pain condition and are compromising pain for constipation, talk to ur family dr, they can work around this issue and prescribe an antiinflammatory or another type of pain med without the constipation. 2nd thing to do is increase ur daily consumption of water AND FIBER. fiber is found in fruits veggies whole wheats etc and is also the main ingred in some laxatives such as metamucil. finally if these tactics dont help, i want u to try milk of magnesia if that doesnt work try a suppository. basically this is trial and error for u to achieve satisfaction without having to go through ERs or long lines at drs office. please read all instructions and directions carefully on the boxes, do not overdose yourself as this will not help but potentiate something worse. if you still havent had a bowel movement despite all these efforts, seek medical intervention! this may be something serious and surgery be neccessary asap. For women its normal to get somewhat constipated during their menses, again increase water n fiber intake also try probiotic yogurts ( activia) contains live bacteria normally present in ur gut. inflammatory bowel disease/disorder (crohns ulcerative colitis) can also can constipation and or diarrhea. endometriosis this is a condition in which there is endometrial tissue present outside the endometrium ( layer of uterus) and during ur normal cycles this layer gets bigger and bigger engorged with blood to support and implantation of the fetus (zygote) then when ur egg is not fertilized by sperm this layer sheds and u are now menstruating. this is regulated by hormones estrogen mainly and progesterone. in endometriosis u have endometrial tissue outside the uterus in places like the intestines, abdomen, rectal pouch of douglas. when these tissues are influenced during ur cycle by hormones, they too get bigger and then shed and the blood collected here causes irritation and pain. also when u have bleeding during a bowel movement when u are on ur cycle and then goes away after your done menstruation, is normally a symptom of endometriosis. again please seek medical intervention as it is not easy to access a patient online, these were just a little pointers and tips about possible outcomes and causes of constipation.

that sucks i get subutex and i get constipated i found that if u can skip a day or 2 between taking subutux and that helps and then i used to poo everyday sometimes twice now the subutex seems to just stop everything i cant even get an erection sometimes if i take a sub and if it stops a 23 year old not to get an erection imagine what it is doing to your bowls!1 so i just have to stop for a couple days sometimes its worth it cause stopping helps lowering your tolerance so u can feel the effects better

Hi, try finding out more about the effects that excess of progesterone can make to your body. Really, look at internet! It can make your bowel movements slower! I always had constipation but it got really worse in the last few years. I took my Mirena out and I´m starting to feel better. The irritation and liquid accumulation is lower. Seven years not feeling good at all and finally I am feeling better. While with Mirena, a gluten free diet has helped me a lot (A LOT).
