I had this occur quite frequently every time I would include dairy in my diet. It might have something to do with it?
I discovered I could get rid of the 'stone' by using a Qtip and GENTLY removing it... the stone would dislodged itself and I gargle with salt water right after.

I had them over one month ago... puss coding my tonsils. I went to my doctor six times during a 12 day period and once to a ENT, (who did nothing for me other than sending out a refferal to have a blood test done). Within that time, I was prescribed 3 different types of antibotics and two different types of steroids, and yet, no releif insight and my throat was still so sore....The blood work showed that I had mono and both doctors agreed that there was no cure and advised me to stop taking the antibiotics- the mono would have to run it's course, as i was told. Yet, I still had these nasty puss things on my tonsils, which I believe was making swallowing difficult for me- these puss things, actually looked like tofu in the back of my mouth... Well, after being sick for twelve days, my friend suggested me to gargle with water and the hydrogen-peroxide solution twice a day- and sure enough within 3 days (6 gargling sessions)- the puss was all coughed out or came out with each rinse.... I was able to swallow and return to work- back to normal.... Try the hydrogen peroxide solutuion- read and follow the instructions - and you'll feel a lot better. P.S. Because i got sick, I quit smoking - not easy but smoking only aggrevates this as well as being around smoke, for that matter----my advice is to try the peroxide gargle and keep up with the non-smoking.

I get the puss things also. But they have changed in color. They are mostly yellowish white but sometimes more often than not they are actually very green. I really never ever get sick. Sometimes my throat hurts but not bad. But then a few days later I cough up the chunks. So being green should I worry>> ? ?

i am so happy that i am not the only person in the world with this odd issue!! i have had these annoying little chunks forever. I believe they started to be consistant after i was sick this winter. It is literally the grossest thing to cough or sneeze and feel a chunk fly from the depths of your throat and what is even worse is taking it out, squishing it and wondering where that awful smell is coming from...once i realized it was in the back of my throat i was sort of horified. to think that something that disgustiong was coming out of my mouth and smelled that bad is nasty! i am totally paranoid about my breath smelling and stuff now....
its awful...
I have found that using a tweezer is helpful with my weekly de-chunking....but beware if you pull and poke to much you will bleed!! :'(
I AM GLAD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!

I've had this issue for most of my adolescent and adult life, and while its nice to know more about it, I have a few points to clarify.
There is a difference between tonsilloliths and "pus pockets". Tonsilloliths are solid and physically unattached to the body. They're just trapped in one of many tonsil crypts. Pustules are actually blisters of pus trapped under the surface of the tissues in the throat.
As to where tonsilloliths come from, in my experience I've been able to attribute them primarily to starchy foods such as rice, potatoes, and some cheeses. Pretty much anything that, when moistened, takes on a pasty consistency. It seems that when you swallow the "paste" gets trapped in the crypts like sand in a seashell. Then bacteria starts growing in it, giving it the yellowish coloring, the unpleasant smell, and the solidity.
I've found that if you feel one back there you can kind of work your throat muscles around enough to dislodge them. However, after reading some of the valuable tips here I'll be switching to Listerine rinses when I have the opportunity, and just warm water when I don't.
As to those talking about use of antibiotics or citrus regimes, that's more in line with those who have pustules on the tonsils rather than tonsilloliths. Antibiotics and citrus will have little or no effect on the formation of tonsilloliths as these aren't a bacterial infection. But if you suspect there's more to the problem than simple tonsillolith formation, such as evidence of blood, then you'll want to see your doctor.
And for those who are "grossed out" by this common occurence, just remember that for each one you dislodge and spit out, there's probably 20-30 you've swallowed and never been the wiser. ;-)

This happened to me about 4 years ago. I started spitting them up in my mouth, and eventually realized they were in fact emerging from two little pockets, one on either side, at the back of my mouth where my tonsils were. They were small, white, smelled extremely foul, and tasted disgusting. My doctor informed me that they were most likely old food particles that had been caught there while eating and slowly turned into bacteria. A month later I had my tonsils taken out, and have never had the problem again.
They are also a huuuge contributor to bad breath, and after having them removed, that problem was also solved!
Best of luck to you.

I've found that when I stuff myself at meals these white chunks occur. Try not eating a lot of food at meals, that helped mine go away[/img]
