So I have been asked by someone whether I need to dress extra warm because I am diabetic and the cold weather could do something to mess up my insulin requirements? I never gave it a thought until now. Is there anything I need to watch with my insulin and my daily requirements? Do I need to take more insulin when it's cold? Or do I need more insulin because of cold weather. I never heard of it but since my work requires me to be outdoors, it is something I thought I had better have cleared up before something actually happened to me on the job. Is there anyone that has any experience in this. I wonder if I should ask the doctor if I need to adjust my insulin for the cold weather. He never mentioned this before so i am hesitant to really worry about this too much since it had never been brought up. I hope someone has some knowledge on whether it is something to be concerned about.
I have never heard of anyone needing to adjust their insulin requirements due to the cold weather. This should not have any bearing on your insulin needs. You should not adjust your insulin, cutting it back or injecting more. You should be just fine with the insulin you take for any other time, regardless of the weather.
Do not ever change your insulin dosage; your doctor should be the one to do this. Metabolic needs may change with being exposed to the cold, but to what degree, I would not know. I really doubt it would be enough to justify changing your insulin dosages. You should check your blood sugars anytime you feel like you are having a hypo no matter what the season. If you have any issues with your blood sugars, discuss them with your doctor.
