I would like to know what is “colostrum” in my milk and how does it benefit my baby. I am new mom. I just delivered baby girl three weeks ago. I decided top breastfeed her, but I am exhausted still.
Colostrum is special milk that your breasts produce during pregnancy and continuing through the early days of breastfeeding. It is yellow to orange in color and thick, sticky, low in fat, and high in carbohydrates, protein, and antibodies to help keep your baby healthy. Colostrum is extremely easy to digest, and is therefore the perfect first food for your baby and has a laxative effect on the baby, helping him pass his early stools, which aids in the excretion of excess bilirubin and helps prevent jaundice.
Congratulations on your daughter. :-)
Your colostrum changed into milk at about 3-5 days after your baby was born.
I'm not clear, did you stop breastfeeding or continuing breasfeeding?
If you are still breastfeeding, be sure to drink a lot of fluids (water and nothing with caffeine) and sleep/rest as much as you can and to have snacks at hand, ready to eat while you are nursing (granola bars, dried fruit, crackers..).
The first month is the hardest to get through.
Your hormones are all wacky and you are probably not getting any sleep so being really tired all the time is heck on your moods/energy.
It does get easier believe it or not. Do try to go for a very short walk everyday, a good oportunity to show off your bundle of joy and to get you some fresh air and some sanity. (these walks really helped me through the baby-blues)
Sleep when she sleeps and forget that the dishes need doing. And if anybody offers to help, say YES! :-)
Good luck, enjoy every moment.
