Users comments and reviews on article Why People Harm Themselves and How to Help a Cutter by Dana Fenton
Thanks for posting this article! I think it's important to remember that people who self-mutilate aren't always depressed too but sometime suffer from OCD. They also do the same skin picking and hair pulling that you mentioned in the article so that's another group to look out for. Thanks again for this though! I thought it was very informative and the cures were very helpful. Well, I should say the treatments, not the cures. :-)

Agree on all counts accept for the line in how someone can stop self harming behaviour: "Realizing that self-harm does make them a bad person: recognize that self-harm is a learned behavior in response to stressful situations." I'm hoping that's a misprint and it should say "doesn't" make them a bad person.

I really appreciate the info on self harming. I have a friend (young woman) at church who is a cutter, but she does it at night and doesn't realize it until the next morning. She has for some reason chosen me to confide in and do not want to lead her wrong. So any advice would be appreciated.
THANK YOU

All this info has been vert opening for me. I want
to help my friend as much as possible. She wants
to talke to some of her family members but is afraid
of how she will be perceived, that it'll be shrugged of,
turn into an arguement, and/or they'll think she is crazy
which she is not. How do I help her with this issue.

I have read servile articles about cutting and they all have said that a person who hurts them self, trys to hide it. But I have a good friend who cuts herself just out in the open and I don't know whether I should be concerned or if she's just doing it for attention . What do I do????

ALWAYS be concerned! Always! It's an extreme way to gain attention, no? How far would they go if they thought you didn't care?
