Hi I just ran across this website. I wanted to let you know that I had the same thing about 10 yrs ago and I had a stone in my Salaiva Gland..I had it for several yrs before I went to the Dr for it because of no insurance..I ended up having to have my left side gland removed completely..It was suppose to be a day surgery ..in and out but I ended up in the hospital 4 days because my gland was really bad infected..now after 10 yrs my right side is doing the same thing..My mouth is very dry all the time when its really swollen and its painful when I eat or drink somthing...It swells alot when I eat somthing I have to chew for a while.
I dont know if its connected or not but I also had stones in my Gallbladder and had to have it removed about 10yrs before I got the stone in my Salaiva Gland
I hope this information helps.

My swollen salivary glands are definitely caused by eating and drinking the wrong things. I have a weakness for mustard and so think I'm off the hook when I can go for a week or two eating mustard. Whoops! No! Mine just came back, as usual mainly on the right side of my face. Fortunatley, I have a beard, which masks the condition so people aren't always gawking at me. :-) This time it was caused by drinking Mountain Dew. So I have to avoid sour things. I've been on tomato soup since since Sunday. Great way to lose weight! On a scale of ten, it's not bad this time. About a "5." So give int a few more days, it will subside. But it is a sneaky condition! One doesn't want to live like a monk. But care has to be taken. There are a LOT worse things in this world than swollen salivary gands. I do attribute the underlying cause to dieretics that I take for high blood pressure. But who wants to trade a stroke for a temporary swollen salivary gland! :-)

This just started happening to me. I get it on my right side on the top of the jaw line and just below the ear. It swells up and if I touch even slightly, it feels like it is going to pop. I do notice that if I put a cool, damp wash cloth on it, it helps relieve the pain and pressure. I really do hope they find out hwat this is, because I most certainly don't want to live with this forever. It can't be safe. If anyone who is reading his knows ANYTHING about this, I encourage you to please reply, it could really help!

I have the same swelling...everyone here seems to have swelling of the submandibular gland or the partoid gland...these are both salivary glands. We have stones, just like kidney stones. They are either in the glands or in the duct (usually they are in the ducts). The glands are in front of our ears (partoid) or beneath our chin(submandibular). They swell with blockage. Partoid stones are worse. There are other glands, but these are the most common affected. The stones block the salva that forms in the glands and does not allow the salva to pass throught the duct to the opening in the mouth. The stones sometimes come out on their own if you suck on sour candy and press on the swollen gland, ENT doctors can take them out via the inside of the mouth if they are close to the opening....otherwise we must undergo a "big" (ENT doc's word, not mine) surgery to cut the neck and take out the gland and duct. This leaves an ugy scar and can result in facial nerve damage. Not good options....lithotripsy is not available in the U.S., but used in other countries to break up the stones. The bad news is that the stones have to come out....they grow in size and will result in infection and ultimate surgery with more complications. I am researching alternatives, but not too much has been found. By the way, a CAT scan shows the location and size of the stones. In a few cases, the stones are opaque and do not show up. In rare cases, these are tumors in us.

That sounds like either mucus or pus. Your doctor should know about this.
For those who get the swelling but not the nasty stringy stuff, you might consider looking into Sjogren's Syndrome.

Mine is a little different....ONLY when i turn upside down,or eat sour food my right cheek puffs out like a blow fish!!!!! Its so weird! really just feels like strong pressure not pain... just uncomfortable.
Mine has been there since i was little...my mom said both used to do it but i only remember the right one. When i eat anything sour i have to rub it back to normal.... and it only hurts if i accidently sleep with it puffed out all night ,and then my cheek feels like a pinching big bruise in the morning.... a day later it will be fine... my family doctor told me it was called a "sensitive salivary gland" when i was like 13.... i am now 25.
It has remained the same my whole life, so i dont continue to find out what it really is or if i am in need of fixing it....anyone else have a situation like this??

my 18 year old son had it about 2 years ago, and now it swelled up again, it was not painful but very swollen. I took him to a Dr and he said that it is quite likely from his infectec throat! My son has had strep throat several times, and he sometimes has infected throat without even knowing, as his throat always has a bit of discomfort from chronic strep.
I looked at him (the DR) with suprise and he said that the glands always swell up some when there is a throat infection, and sometimes they swell up and get pretty bad, which is why the antibiotics seem to help.
Sometimes they remove the tonsils and it clears up, so he says

i have been experiencing swollen salivary glands (at least thats what i think it is) for about 3 years now. no pus or anything like that, just swollen all the time. Both cheeks, sometimes swollen really bad, sometimes just a little. my face always seems to be red, like blood always rushes to it. Seems to get worse when just about to eat/after eating, and while lying flat on my back. When my face is swollen really bad im light headed and have a headache. Been to a doctor recently she diagnosed it as infected salivary glands, and gave an anitbiotic. It seemed to help for a week (thats all the prescription lasted) but then my face began to swell again. Its constant and its driving me crazy. Not so much as painful as it is annoying. My family says they dont seem to notice it except for when its really swollen, but I know my face doesnt feel right. The dr. said that sucking on really sour candy might help, and said possibly have a dentist reomove stones if the problem is not resolved. Has anyone else had this procedure done? and did it help?

Definitely keep going to the doctor about it. My Parotid saliva gland kept swelling and going down. Eventually, it swelled and never went away. I took several tests and it was a low grade malignant cyst in my saliva gland. I had surgery but was told that it will probably appear again in about ten years or so. That was 13 years ago and now I am having swelling in the saliva gland under my jaw bone and a lot of pain. I have just started my testing again and will more than likely do radiation this time.

I have been suffering with a similar problem since I was seventeen. I am 38 now. It started by the saliva duct under my tongue on the left side hurting terribly. This lasted for a couple of weeks, at which time I passed a stone through my duct, but I had to use the tip of a knife to open the end of the duct enough to get the stone out. No problems for a few years, then I moved to Arizona. Probably not a good call. As it turns out when you get dehydrated (and when you sleep) your salivary glands produce less fluid. The thick fluid that people are talking about is puss from an infection inside the gland. When the fluid stops moving out of your gland into your mouth, the bacteria from your mouth can go into your gland, especially when the duct is wrecked from passing a stone. Expressing the fluid reduces the pressure inside the gland, which is why it causes relief from the pain. The regimen for this problem is to drink plenty of liquids and stay hydrated all the time to prevent it. If it starts to flare up, don't sit and hope it clears up. Immediately start drinking more fluids and sucking on lemon drops or some other hard candy. Yes, this will hurt like blue blazes, but keep on keeping on. The gland will produce fluid which will build up inside until the pressure is great enough for it to squirt out. Everytime this happens the concentration of bacteria inside is reduced and your body can better fight the infection. After a few days it will go away. If not, go to the doctor and get a round of antibiotics and a blister pack of steroids to reduce the swelling. Do not be surprised if you have to tell the doctor what he/she needs to prescribe. For people like me whose glands on one side are wrecked from chronic infections, stones, etc. surgery is an option, but my ENT told me that it could not be done while the gland is infected. YMMV. Good luck and God bless all of you, I would not wish this on anyone because it hurts so much.

I went to my doctor yesterday complaining of swelling and enlarged lymph nodes. it is in the right jaw area and near the front of my ear. the pain is excruciating when I eat and it swells twice the size. The pain and swelling subsides if I use a cold compress for about a half hour. She put me on Cipro (antibiotic) and told me to suck on a lemon. I think this will be quite painful, but if it works, I'll do it.
