If you have Lupus, Sjogren's is a very real possibility. There is medication you can take if your salivary glands are not producing enough saliva. One is called Evoxac and at this time is is fairly expensive and there is no generic. There is another, but I don't know the name. They cost about the same, though.

Hi Beautybu1, hope you hit this site again, I was wondering if you have now after a year found out what you have as your symptoms apart from a lump I have under my tongue, are exatly like mine, the burning under chin/jaw from ear to ear, the 'wet' sensation in ear. I have had pain/electric shock pain on and off for 4 years, and had root canals in every top tooth on my left side, probably all unnecessary.

But now it has all hit another level. Had to go to A&E twice this week as this time the pain was so excrutiating I really thought 'I want out of this'. Pain radiating from left under jaw to ear and cheek, teeth, and up into the left side of my head. My left jaw swelled up, I have a painfull lump just under my tongue which they think is a blocked salivary gland or a stone. I have ear ache, had infected throat and ear in the middle of all this which was treated with penicillin. Burning sensation, stinging, pain shooting everywhere, even my neck and chest and color bone are painfull now. Sleep wise the least painful position is sit up position in bed, which is pretty uncomfortable, but at least not so painful. Excrutiating pain began 5 days ago, drs/dentists have no clue - could be teeth grinding, could be neuralgia, TMJ, sinus problems, etc, etc, - for two days so bad actually had suicidal thoughts. Drs just sent me home time after time with painkillers!!

Although today for the first time just about bareable I am dreading it getting worse again. Am seeing a facial consultant on monday. Off work again, already had to cut down my hours due to ME.
This pain and swelling i am experiencing now is most frightening thing have experienced. I am glad I came across this forum, but did you sort your symptoms out?? Or has anyone else any more advice.

Sounds like you have what is called tonsilloliths (or tonsil stones). They smell horrendous & can cause bad breath & the other symptoms you mentioned. They can be anything from a cheesy material or if they are allowed to stay in tonsillar area longer, can harden & grow (although this is uncommon).

A parotid gland stone (tonsilloliths) is different than salivary gland stones. You can use sour candies (like lemon drops) to help expel the salivary gland stones, but tonsilloliths (parotid stones) is usually not hard. They can cause very foul breath & are usually softer, like the consistency of cottage cheese. Although some can harden if they remain in the parotid gland too long. There are sites that sell kits to remove the tonsilloliths & I know many people who have expelled them just by coughing or pressing them out with a q-tip. But, I feel it is best left up to the doctor to remove them & minimize risk of causing further problems.

Hi, I am suffering from this dreadful salivary gland swelling issue but unable to find the cause. Can you help me out with the exact tests done by your ENT? In my case, ANA was strongly positive but SSRa and SSRb were negative. That made the ENT prove that its not Sjogren's. But i really dont trust them as i experience dry mouth.

It would be super great if you can help me with those exact tests. Thanks.

Hello, I was reading your post and wanted to ask you what extensive tests have you done to rule out anything else. My husband has similar symptoms and for him it started as a rash that would swell behind the right ear lobe for 20-30 min. Then it extended to his parotid glands both of which are swollen. Did you get to do a biopsy, CT scan or MRI? I am looking forward to your answer and hope you are doing better on this medication.

this proplem started 3 yrs. ago. my ENT doctor has put me on many anti's sometimes it helped, some not. Had ct scan, mri and xray's. finally i had surgury, quess what she couldn't find it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   back on anti's, then it didn't show up for 3 months.

it's now sat, it started up again thursday, bigger than ever, but this time, under my tonque is also swollen,it has never stayed swollen for more than 2 days.  the difference this time is it is so painfull, feels like a bad tooth ache, sore throat and the lump under my chin is as big as a lemon, hard to talk, too painful to eat and swallow, i am in so much pain i can't stand it. called my ent today, she called in some anti's and said i probably have to have the gland removed. i am very scared, she told me there's always a chance that a nerve can be touched and part of your face can get deformed or something like that. don't know if i should have it removed, but i certainly cannot live like this anymore it hurs so bad i can't believe it and i can stand alot of pain-had 2 back surguries..   help

My father has had the problem for many years. Recently someone told him to suck on sour candy and IT IS WORKING. Give it a try. The more sour the better.

You may be experiencing symptoms of a whole body yeast infection or fungal infection. An acupuncturist may be able to help.

I have swollen parotid glands on both sides. However, my right side is the worst. Right now it is hard, swollen and sore and that is after 5 days of antibiotics. I had the mumps as a child however, Dr tells me that is has nothng to do with this but I don't believe that. It is the same swelling and pain that I remember as a child. It seems the Dr's don't take this very seriously, they would if it was happening to them. Has anyone else had the mumps?

Both my glands became swollen about 2 months ago, although they've both decreased and are barely noticeable, it;s still there! I've been to my dentist and he said my tmj is fine. I went to my doctor and he's just useless, he just recently booked a scan for me. I don't feel any pain on either of the glands, my bite was a little misaligned earlier on, I'm not sure if it's fine now or I just got used to it. Anyone recommend anything?
