I thought I had hit the wrong message board until I stumbled across your note. My son started to swell almost a week ago and the front of his neck bloated up until he looked like Fat Bast&*d from Austin Powers - he's only 7 and looked like I fed him cheeseburgers for breakfast, lunch, dinner (and a few snacks). He's only 55 pounds! It was where you said you 'looked like a pufferfish' that hit me. They swore he had mumps, but that was dispelled with testing. He did have a temp that lasted the entire swelling period that hung out between 99 and 99.8 - do you experience that as well? The swelling started slowly on one side, overnight went across his throat and the next morning his entire neck was engulfed. It lasted like that for two full days then subsided and disappeared today. 7 days exactly. This is the first time I've ever seen him like this. I'll admit - he had a sore throat and cough just prior to this occuring, and mono and a bacterial infection were both ruled out. He's had no history of any other issues at all besides a minor cold and cough on occasion, but did have orbital cellulitis at 2 1/2, which I suppose makes me super-concerned. Any thoughts? :)

Hi I was looking on the computer trying to find a doctor that could help me and I found this site. When I was in first grade I was being sent home from school weekly because they thought I had the mumps. I had surgery to remove the gland and of course it did not dry up and disappear like they said it would. Now at 33 I have a large lump on the side of my face and it appears to be getting bigger, I know people mean well but if you are feeling self concious about the way you look and they say what is wrong with your face do you have a toothache I mean I want to scream. I am really struggling with low self esteem and I am so extremely self concious about it. The docs I have bben to say that if the remove the part left I could be paralized on the right side. With all the technology they have now a days has no one thought of a solution. I went o an ENT and along with many of you they tested me for allergies and everything else but should I try an oral surgeon? I want someone to help me I am tired of people I do not even know commenting on it or my family talking about it. It did help to read these posts and to know I am not alone and it seems to be a right side thing. Thanks for listening.

This is my exact problem too. Sometimes when it drains, it is a thick, mucus-like string that just comes out of it. It drains sporadically it seems, though salty foods really affect it. and It fluctuates in size also. I got it checked by an ENT a few years ago and they operated on it, basically draining it completely. He said that I would possibly have to have that done again at some point, but it wouldnt go away. There was a stone in it, but its gone now, but I am still having issues with it.
Would getting the saliva gland removed be helpful or even plausible? I am tired of dealing with this. Some days it is just annoying, and other days it is painful and swollen so much that I can barely talk.
anybody who is also having issues specifically with the gland under your tongue, what are some things that affect/help it?

My son and I were playing, and I was blowing a plastic wistle really, really hard. First my petuitary glands got sore like I had just popped a really sour piece of candy in my mouth. A day after, my cheek on the right side is really sore. I just thought that maybe some remedy is available for this issue.

Sometimes it hurts so much, so quickly, that I wish someone would hit me on my fiace with a baseball bat! The pain is that severe. I will not be able to close my teeth on that side (my right), i look totally disfigured, the pain is horrible. But, it can rise and relieve itself within minutes, or last for hours or days, my face gets soooo sore.
Fifteen years now, no help. Just reoccurring horrible pain.
Help!

Hi
My Face is swollen below the left ear. What i would like to know.
Does anyone get tooth aches when its swollen. When i lay down
at night i get bad tooth aches on my two left molers. Left top &
left lower? But almost only when i lay flat. I scared stiff that the
problem has affected the teeth , and that i might need two root-
extractions.
Thanks
charles

This happened to me and is happening again right now...I have had the stones in the past and had to have them cut out and it was very painful at the time but the relief afterwards was amazing. I highly recommend going to see and Ear, Nose and Throat doctor because they specialize in this and can be misdiagnosed my so many other physicians. This sounds to me like exactly what I had. If the glad swells especially when you eat or drink then I am sure that you have stones bc the stones are blocking your salivary gland to produce saliva thru the duct into your mouth to help you break down your food etc. I feel your pain...good luck I hope this helps!

I also get swollen saliva glands off and on. I went from Dr to Dr until finally some blood work pointed to a condition called Sjogren's syndrome. I wound up at a rheumatologist to get treatment. If i understand it right, your body begins to produce antibodies that attack your salivary glands, tear ducts, and joints. The only real treatment that I have heard of is Malaria medication. Why this works i have no idea but it is easy to take with few side effects.
If you have swollen parotid glands, unexplained joint pains now and then and possibly even a rash on your face you should get tested for Sjogren's Syndrome.

Hi everybody with the swollen faces and such, I have found an antibiotic called keflex. It is esspecially for soft tissue infections. It is the only thing that has worked for me. I have suffered from this for a long time and I used t just live with the embarrasment of the puffed up face. Now I just ask the Doc for the keflex and within a day or two the swelling goes away and I can smile again. Best wishes to all of you in my same boat!!!!

Reading all of these posts really made me get a lump in my throat! I've been suffering with this condition since 1987... and it's been very difficult for me as you can all imagine. At first, it only happened a few times a year... now it's a daily condition. The pain is so bad at times, i want to stab myself thinking that pain would be better. Like others here, it usually happens on my right side more than my left... but my left side also gets swollen at times. I get the mucous string stuff, the pain is so bad even after the blocks seems to be broken. I find that sweet, salty foods/liquids can make it worse... what the heck do we eat! At times, I cannot eat because it's so bad. I went to too many doctors and if one more "specialist" tells me to suck on lemons I'll throw one at them! It just doesn't work. I read from other posts that stress can be an issue, I completely agree there. I wish there was a treatment that was more "natural". I feel the best we can do is try to stay away from processed, salty or overly sweet foods when your gland is "sensitive". If anyone else has some rememdies, please post them. This condition is running my life at times. I won't leave them house when my face is swollen... I'm so tired of telling people I had dental work done, or I'm allergic to nuts or some c**p! Very embarrassing...

I was diagnosed just last night with a calcium deposit or infection in my salivary gland. The only problem is; all of these posts say to the left or right and mine is directly under my chin where the bone curves. I am wondering if this is the correct diagnosis but I have noticed an extremely dry mouth ever since this started swelling. Now I look like I have a huge double chin and it is painful to move my head or mouth. This is also recurring. What is this?

I have had symptoms for several years of mostly left side saliva gland swelling and at one point the right saliva gland just below the tongue was so swollen that I could feel a pinball size lump underneath. My glands in my arm pits have been increasingly swollen, as with the glands in front of my ears and tonsils (every once and awhile the tonsils would secrete a whitish cottage cheese substance and clear mucousy balls.) This has been on going for approximately three years. I have been put on every antibiotic known to man, I have been told it is a saliva gland infection, strep throat, mono and a variety of other issues. The interesting thing to note about that is the Dr.'s have never once actually tested for any of the above only assumed. It wasn't until I lost 60 lbs in two months that the truth was known. I have Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Tonsils are lymph nodes people. Glands are the first thing affected. Anyone having the same symptoms should truly be aware of any other glandular issues they have such as swelling armpits, etc. Please require your Doctor to do blood work with a differential, this will measure the white blood cells present and could lead to an earlier cancer diagnosis then what I had. Don't let them antibiotic you to death. Antibiotic immediately prescribed with no testing is just a lazy doctors' way of blowing you off when they can't be bothered to explore the cause.

Just wanted to poke my head in. I've been having issue with swollen salivary glands (parotid, as far as i can tell) under my ears for years. It used to be on and off, but it's nowadays pretty much just on. I've also noticed that it seems linked closely to my ears themselves. I've had some flaking of skin in my ears for a long while as well. I haven't found anything that seems to help, but there are occasions where it seems to subside for a bit. I try to notice any shifts in diet when it either acts up or subsides, but have not been able to pinpoint anything.
I have a family comprised entirely of doctors and none of them have had anything to offer. I've never gotten it looked at by an "Ear, Nose and Throat" doctor, but perhaps that would be wise. I guess that's all. No solution to offer, but I guess it's good to know there are others with this annoying problem. Good luck to us all!
