From my non-professional knowledge, I hope that many (including future commenters) will take a few things into consideration:
(1) Smoking tobacco and/or marijuana is detrimental to your health.
(2) Smoking marijuana is likely more detrimental to your health than vaporizing marijuana.
(3) Vaporizing marijuana is potentially detrimental to your health. Vaporization has not been confirmed as a safe method of consumption.
(4) Medicinal marijuana is intended for ease of pain and increase of appetite. It is a symptomatic treatment and is not a cure for illness.
(5) Marijuana overdose is virtually impossible.  The difficulty/inability to overdose does not indicate that marijuana is not potentially fatal.
(6) Marijuana's natural origin does not indicate or even suggest it is safe.
(7) Marijuana reduces mental capacity and/or performance.
(8) Marijuana is potentially addictive.  While it may not be inherently habit-forming, it can become a habit (hence, the term "stoner" to describe a habitual consumer of marijuana).
(9) Marijuana study is not estensive as prevalence did not occur until the 1960s-1970s.  It simply is not possible for enough accurate and informative data to have been collected (due to time, legality, and social perception).
(10) Anything can kill you. There is not a single thing in existence that is incapable of killing you.

PLEASE REFRAIN FROM STATING OPINION OR UNCONFIRMED INFORMATION AS FACT. MISINFORMATION CAN CAUSE HARM OR DEATH.

I quit tobacco recently (and permanently) and will be quitting marijuana sometime soon. My intention is only to inform to the best of my abilities; it is not to necessarily promote quitting.  Every person has the right to do as they wish.

I hope this information proves helpful to someone!

Apologies, I forgot to include another important consideration:

(11) Lung cancer (as well as other similar illnesses such as COPD) can occur due reasons other than cigarette or marijuana smoking.

Anecdotal evidence is not definitive and can be misleading.

I know this is an old thread, but I'll just add my two cents. I found this post trying to research other cases of coughing after running due to marijuana use. I've been a heavy marijuana smoker for about a year. I just went out on a run, and after coming home and cooling off, I began to cough. Nothing too unpleasant, but certainly a reminder that I do indeed smoke burnt plant matter.

Anyway, there is this "tar" contained within marijuana smoke that can stay in your lungs until  you, as the original poster said, hack it up. To alleviate this issue: Don't smoke out of pipes, or any piece that isn't water filtered. Heavy pipe smokers will always have more burnt plant matter inhaled because there's no water to catch it. Yes, if you use a bong and cover the top with a tissue, you will see that your "filter" picks up some black nastiness from the smoke. This is why you should never hold your hits.

THC, CBD, and all of the other cannabinoids you are smoking are instantly vaporized and absorbed by your body when you ignite and inhale. As soon as you've taken in your hit, blow it out immediately. If the smoke made it to the lungs, then you've already absorbed every beneficial part of that marijuana. Young people or new smokers like to "ghost" hits, which means inhaling smoke and not exhaling until there's nothing left to blow out. That is what allows that nasty tar to coat your lungs. You want to get the vaporized cannabinoids IN and the smoke OUT as quickly as possible. Keeping the smoke in longer does NOT increase the effects of marijuana. The extra "high" or light-headedness that you feel is a result of oxygen deprivation, and may trick you into thinking your weed "works better" if you hold it in. In reality, you're just holding your breath.

You won't see an educated, experienced marijuana smoker hold their hits longer than a second. Ideally, a medical marijuana patient would consume their marijuana orally by baking it. Some prefer to smoke, and probably always will smoke. Investing in a nice, glass-on-glass water pipe with a diffuser stem and a six-arm tree perculator will get you some of the "cleanest" smoke possible. If you've ever seen a bong with a perculator, you'll see that the perc itself does get quite nasty from repeated use. Without that there, that nastiness could very well end up in your lungs. More perculators equal a cooler, albeit less dense, charge of smoke because each arm on a tree perc acts as one more water filter between your burnt plant matter and your lungs.

Studies have shown for years that marijuana itself contains no carcinogenic compounds, so comparing smoking marijuana to smoking a commercially-made cigarette is extremely ignorant. Compounds within cigarettes have been PROVEN to be carcinogenic, smoke or no smoke. Marijuana-only smokers show no decrease in lung function or capacity compared to non-smokers, and in fact show a great increase in lung function and capacity compared to cigarette smokers. I hope some of the information presented in this short response helps someone out there.

Question for anyone that knows. I am on day 10 of quitting weed after years of smoking zig zag tobacco wraps(the ones that are rolled around a straw) and blowing the best weed you can get 18%+ thc stuff.  I am on day 10 clean and I STILL cough up some black stuff in shower. Is that normal that i am still coughing the stuff up 10 days CLEAN totally? Could it not be the tar and just from bad food or someshit?

You gave no information, your reply sucked. Stop being so concerned with being a smart ass, be more concerned with being smart. Re-read what the post said then reply.

I still cough up the black c**p to this day so it must not be cancer or something serious, I would be dead by now. I quit smoking cigarettes and switched to E ciggs "recommended" but that didn't stop that black c**p I am still coughing up. here's what I smoke a day usually half an eighth rolled up into little blunts using blunt wraps, and I don't use a lot of paper, I always use the least amount of blunt paper I can and I drink like a 6 pack a night of light beer. I see friends that smoke more than I do that dont hack c**p up at all and I am hacking c**p up everyday that's where I am confused.......

Hey, as long as its coming out, I figure it's a good thing. It has to be better than smokers of equal caliber that don't hack up tar in the morning. As far as I'm concerned it's an evolutionary benefit to hack up tar. My granddad does it every day (he's a tobacco smoker though) and he's alive and kickin at 72.

If your really concerned, spit in an jar and get it tested. Most likely is tar being expelled however blood can also present as black and blood is bad. Never just guess.

I am in my late 50s and have been using cannabis  (organic bush) for medical reasons for 7 years. I has been under supervision and I have kept detailed diaries.
Its much different to street stuff both in taste and effect.   There is very little medical benefit in street cannabis due to the imbalance of canaboided, so  any anti cancer or anti psychotic benefits most think they are getting, they are not. Add to that the chemical sprays, hormones, pesticides and herbicides, your sucking that straight into your lungs, blood stream etc. (remember that cyclic vomiting) weed!
Is weed bad for you? Depends where you get it from and how much you smoke. All things in moderation.

To my knowledge cannabis is not used to treat cancer, but is used to treat the nausea that kemo causes in cancer patients, and works very well in some but not all.. Most of the clinical inf. I have read suggests that users who start using weed, under the age of 15/16, can sustain long term brain impairment and/or reduction of cognitive ability. However the same effect is not noted in older users whose symptoms decrease within weeks/ months after they stop using. Again, its quality and amount. Anything in excess can be harmful and everyone is different.
