I'm 49 and been dealing with some similar issues with all my fingers. Pain is extreme and 4 Derms, corticosteroids, fungus ointments (prescribed and over=counter have not worked. Am also worried I have some incurable unknown disease! Dry cracked skin is now moving to my feet. Read some posts on this site with similar issues, so I guess other people suffer as well. I'm at my wits end. Please e-mail me

I always get cracks in my fingernails and knuckles in the winter time. I found that if I took 2-3 TBS of organic, unrefined, virgin coconut oil a day, it went away. I tested it where I took it internally for 2 weeks and it cleared up. Then I stopped for 2 weeks, and it all came back. Did that again two more times, and every time I was taking the coconut oil it cleared up and when I stopped, it came back. Searching now because daughter has terribly chapped hands that are cracked and bleeding. I am giving her the coconut oil right now, but I need a quick fix!

I have hand eczema and have tried everything under the sun to heal it, like you. Are your hands terribly itchy like mine? When you scratch, does your skin rip apart? Then turns leathery, peels and starts itching all over again? I'm thinking it's a ph thing. When I can stick to the PH DIET, it gets better. Practically every body process creates an acid. That, coupled with the acidity of the modern food made my ph too high in acid. I know this because now that I am drinking water with a tsp. of baking soda per quart, the itching has almost totally subsided, hands are still dry though, but clearly an improvement! I also rinse my hands with baking soda water. Those lavendar/baking soda bath cubes are great too. Dr. Young says that once your PRAL intake is more than your kidneys can filter, and more than your lungs can expel, the acid will come out through your skin. As we have found out the hard way, it can be devastating. It's pretty hard to be too basic, that is, too low ph number because most metabolic processes create acids, So I'm loving my sodium bicarbonate water! Ph that is too low causes dehydration and low energy. Ph that is too high causes all kinds of havoc... some peole say it's the cause of most diseases. Lung disease causes respiratory acidosis. Kidney diseases causes metabolic acidosis. Diabetes causes diabetic ketoacidosis ( I have a friend that died this way at the age of 33). It is the process that sets in when the excretory systems aren't functioning. So I'm asking myself.... what is causing it in me? Acidosis is a symptom. I think it's the food. I eat a high acid diet. I hope it's not diabetes. I know I need healthy acids like ascorbic acid (vit C) so I'm going out right now to get some more EmergenC drink packets. They contain mineral ascorbates. TTYL

I'm glad the O'keefes works for your husband. I does not work for me. I think I will go with the peroxide and dandruff shampoo. Good luck to you and your husband!

Using a hand cream with Alpha /Beta Hydroxy in it . It is the only thing that ever worked for me. It speeds up cell turn over, and used regularly can prevent hardened skin from forming.

I had so many theories and I tried everything under the sun to cure my severe pompholyx eczema. Finally, finally finally....I figured out what was going on. I am allergic to nickel. All the hardware on our home cabinetry was nickel. I replaced all the handles and have experienced an amazing remission of the symptoms. My hands are still extremely sensitive and can be triggered by external sources in the course of daily life going to and from work, etc. but I have eliminated the daily and nearly continual irritation that caused this "untreatable" medical condition and the cessation of nearly everything that was enjoyable to me. My doctors should have sent me to a rheumatologist specialist in allergies instead of letting me languish for years because they could have saved me so much pain and suffering! I have been raising children including twins who are now 3 while simultaneously battling this dermatological menace. Can you imagine?!

I've been suffering of hardened and cracked spots in my fingers and thumbs for over a year, and after being to dermatologists twice and even trying to freeze the cracked spots like we do with moles I came to the conclusion that the best way to treat it is to cover with a bandage for a few days.  They will get a lot better or even disappear, returning after a week or so.  But if you keep covering them up whenever they appear, they tend to get less and less aggressive.  I am just learning how to live with the condition, until I find a final treatment for it - or go eat grass by the roots.

There is a cream called Bepanthen which is good. Women use it on cracked nipples when they are breast feeding. It is also good on Nappy rash, Might be worth a try. Do it at night when she is asleep.
