I'm about 4wks along, and am also experiencing stomach cramping. Sometimes it is higher in my gut, other times it is really low, almost pelvic. I had a m/c recently, so I was really worried about this, but I feel a lot better knowing that other women are experiencing the same thing. :-)
I've noticed it's better when I lie on my side at night, and I recently read that the increased level of estrogen at this time causes digestion to slow, so I think it's a combination of intestinal pain and a stretching uterus.
I'm going to try a hot bath before bed tonight -- that sounded like one of the best ideas for me, and I might get a small pillow to put between my knees since I'll be sleeping on my sides a bit more. :-)

Thanks everybody!!

I am so glad that I have found this website! I am five weeks (which I think is an under estimated mile stone) I have been waking up for the last three nights always at 12.50 with terrible cramps! They are kind of moving into my back now. It seems to help when I pass a solid or lots of wind! My best friend who has a very healthy happy one year old says that this is totally normal and she had to go to the hospital once as she was so worried! Also, you can apparently have phantom menstrual cramps! Let's hope for the best! Keep me updated how you're all going.

Sarah :-)

What a HUGE relief to see so many similar responses. I woke up for the first time lastnight to terrible cramps...I was thinking I was passing a kidney stone again. But they went away after about 10 minutes. Very very scary. Thanks for all of the responses.

Hi everyone, i'm about 7 weeks pregnant with my first baby and i also am experiencing cramps, but mine aint as bad as menstrual cramps.
I've done my research and have read that cramps can be very normal in early pregnancy b/c of your uterus and ligaments stretching.
I had my first ultrasound last week and everything seemed to be fine.
I have an appt. next week i hope everything is still fine.
Goodluck to all of you, and try not to stress out alot.

Ill keep you posted. :-)

HI ALL
I am new to this site and oh so happy i found it. I am a mom of 2 both healthy and easy pregnancys. Found out i was prego with a home preg test. According to my last period i am 5 weeks prego, i have been having servere cramping in lower ab, which is normal for me durring my period and after sex durring ovulation. cramps are worse at night while im asleep. i started getting nervous so i went to ob for sono, my doc was not in so i saw the midwife, she gave me an internal and a vos which showed nothing. she sent me to the hospital for a more detailed sono and still nothing! so im 5 weeks and no sign of sac or anything. went and got another hpt and still tested positive but this time the line is much darker than the first test i took 2 weeks ago. im very nervous and have to go back in a week for sono.

So encouraging to see all these posts. I'm 6 weeks pregnant (4th pregnancy) and last night thought it was the startings of a miscarriage - rolled over in bed and told my husband this! The cramping woke me up and was pretty strong, and almost felt like mild contractions, which is why I thought miscarriage. But actually reading all this I'm hoping it's uterine expanding pains. There's been no bleeding and the pains have gone today, so we'll see.... 8-|

I am 8 weeks pregnant and having the same problem as everyone else! I started having mild cramping at around 5 weeks but this week it is actually more painful & keeping me from sleeping. It seems to not matter if I sleep on my side or back, but laying on my stomach makes it worse. I have been suspecting that the slowed-down digestion is playing a part, so I am trying to take extra magnesium before I go to bed, eat apples and dried plums, I even went for a walk after dinner.
I agree with everyone that this feels like its a combination of full guts and growing uterus. Oh, I wish I could sleep! I'm so tired but I have a feeling that I won't fall asleep till after the pain stops, which is hopefully soon, it's a quarter to 3.
Thank you everyone for posting, I feel much better knowing I am not the only one.

I am about 8 weeks pregnant and had those symptoms from 4 to 6 weeks, too, they have all but subsided and they are normal. My ob said that they can be made worse by dehydration so make sure that you are drinking lots of water.

AHHHH This cramping is sooo miserable!! Up ALL night! I am four weeks and the doctors say this is normal. Really? I dont think extreme painful cramps with chills and sweats should ever be normal. The only thing I have found that does help me is that when I start to feel the cramps coming in the night is to sit up, or I pile all the pillows against my head board and lean against them and sleep. I guess being in the upright position helps the cramps. Ive never even had menstral cramps before this with my normal periods. How much longer will this last? Forget the Tylenol! It doesnt make any diff.

I am having something similar. Though I am not 100% sure I am pregnant yet.

I have a very normal cycle and right now my period is five days late. I have never ever been late before, so its promising to be sure. I started experiencing cramps tonight over my work shift ( I work nights) It kind of freaked me out a little. There is no bleeding, so maybe I am experiencing what everyone else appears to be.

I have an appointment with my doctor on the 30th of June.

Also I have actually taken two home tests and both have been negative at this point. One was two days prior to when my period was due, so I expected a neg, the second was two days after the missed period day.

My mother said she missed two periods before her tests showed positive for me and my younger brother.

I guess after reading everyone's notes, I am not so nervous that my period is late for the first time in my life right when I start trying to have a baby. lol.

Crossing fingers for everyone! :-)

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and get what I call "poop cramps" its only happened twice but it always happens around 3am, either I can't sleep or I get woken up with stomach pain and cramping. I won't have to use the washroom but I feel bad enough that I know I have to either throw up or poop. My stomach just feels awful. Each time I've gone to the bathroom, and even tho I don't have the urge to go, I force myself to. And so far each time I'm able to release my bowels. It sounds gross but I automatically feel better. The cramping goes away and I can go back to sleep. I don't know what this is, at first I thought it was pregnancy sickness, because I feel like I could throw up but I force myself to do the other, because its the lesser of two evils. I don't know what causes it. I'm going to ask my doctor. I'm just glad I'm not the only once experiencing late night cramping! It makes me feel less worried!!!

I came upon this forum cause I was having the same issues....waking up in the middle of the night w/ severe cramps for about 5-10 mins, going to the bathroom, and then finally falling back asleep. I am only 4 weeks pregnant so was concerned and brought this up with my doctor yesterday. Her explanation was that my ovaries are very enlarged right now (I went through IVF to conceive), so the intense cramping happens when my full bladder pushes against the ovaries. It made sense why it happens in the middle of the night...I'm not relieving myself consistently like the daytime. I don't know if the ovaries enlarge even in natural pregnancies, but thought that explanation may help put some minds at ease! I tried to stop drinking water a couple of hours before bed last night, and had an almost peaceful night of sleep so there is some merit to this explanation!

I am 5 weeks pregnant today. Last night I started cramps that I would call mild but resemble the types of cramps you are all talking about exactly. They went on for two hours from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. My legs even felt crampy, my arms too. But it wasn't a scary cramp--I was kinda waiting for that but it never came. Reading that you all seem to be experiencing this around the same time and that it is normal makes me feel a lot better. Pure Chocolate seems to help me. Walking around helps. (It is the worst and the most relentless when I lay down on my right side.) And "Pregnancy Tea" from Whole Foods helps. I feel it starting up again tonight, so this will be my second night. If it is normal, I think I can just go with it. I actually feel like my stomach is stretching. How long can I really keep this early pregnancy secret anyway?
