When laying on my left side sleeping I am awakened to what sounds like a whining puppy on exhaling. In one exhale it sounds like whine, whine. Feels like it is coming from bronchial or throat area. Thank you.
The whining sound you are experiencing during exhaling while lying on your left side could have several potential causes. Here are a few possibilities to consider:
-
Bronchial or airway obstruction: It's possible that there may be a partial blockage or narrowing in your airways, which could result in a whining or wheezing sound during exhalation. This could be caused by conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, or allergies.
-
Vocal cord dysfunction: Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is a condition where the vocal cords close abnormally during breathing, causing a whistling or wheezing sound. It can be triggered by certain positions or activities, including lying on a particular side.
-
Gastroesophageal reflux: Acid reflux can cause irritation in the throat and lead to a whining or wheezing sound during breathing. It may be more noticeable when lying on a specific side due to changes in the position of the stomach and esophagus.
Treatment options for these conditions can vary depending on the underlying cause. They may include medication (such as bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, or antacids), lifestyle modifications (such as avoiding triggers or changing sleep positions), breathing exercises, or other interventions as determined by a healthcare professional.
