I am 17 years old and I have just recently started using YAZ (not for sexual reasons but for pains, I am not sexually active) since the 18th (started first day of my period). I understand its normal to get brown discharge after a period. I always have, but it usually only lasts about 2 days, and is a light brown colour.
However, since my period finished, about a week ago and im still getting the discharge. But its a lot darker and more mucusy :? . Could this be a side effect of just starting YAZ
How do i stop the excessive dark discharge? Its really quite annoying and really gross, luckily though, i don't think there is a smell yet. :)

I have been experiencing dark brown discharge for weeks now but I have see my gyn about it! She tested for sti's and yeast infections and found nothing for me!
My questions were never answered! I really don't think it is old blood and it is not an infection... Is this normal?

I thought it was interesting alot of people were on yaz, however I take the generic version of Loestrin fe. I am having to wear a tampon or pantyliner and have to change it regularly. I shouldn't be on my period though. I sometimes forget to take the pill or do not always take it on time so I am wondering if that has anything to do with it. Does anyone else do this?

I chose not to be on Yaz because a friend of mine had some serious problems on it. Instead, my doctor put me on Ortho Novum 7/7/7 and I was on it for 10 months without any problems. Then I moved away from my boyfriend for 6 months for an internship and chose to stop taking it because I didn't see any point in paying for it when I wasn't going to be having sex. a little over a month ago I moved back to my boyfriend and began taking the same stuff again. and two days ago, after being on the pill again for two weeks, I started getting the nasty brown -sometimes with a reddish tint to it- that everyone is talking about on here. I have been reading a lot online the last couple days and have found that either it's left over blood and uterus lining, just my body's way of cleaning itself out, or that I'm pregnant. however, I don't believe that I could be pregnant because my boyfriend is extremely paranoid about pregnancy and we use condoms along with the birth control. But I am still worried about this stuff. it has never happened to me before and it grosses me out....

sooo agree with all yall! i have been taking birth control the last near 6 months and just witihin the last 2 began having the brown discharge c**p start. last month it was heavy at times, some strong enough to need protection. my bf and i do have unprotected sex, its bad but it happens. i had a slight period last month which seemed about 3 days and was not very heavy at all. then this month for the past two weeks ive had occasional discharge again. it is also clotty and mucus looking and a dark color. it almost seems to be a mix of discharge and my period.
unfortunately, i took the initiative to look up this problem on the internet. now i see articles that say its "old blood"... its pregnancy.. its all kinda c**p. so now im on the verge of taking a pregnancy test. i just dont know what to do. guys have it so easy not havin to worry with this shizzz >:(

This is normal. No worries. A lot of times its your body telling you that your birth control may not be as effective as it once was. If your experiencing the cramping with it, go back to your gyno and tell them that you want to change your birth control. Sometimes the hormones in the birth control are too much for your body. (some girls that are slimmer need less hormones) If your experiencing a feeling of nausea then that could be it too, but never rule out pregnancy until you take a test! But remember that sometimes they will be negative, so if your feeling other symptoms of pregnancy make sure you tell the doctor you want a urine test. Just pay attention to your hormones and make sure you take your last week of pills for the extra stuff that your missing for the month. Those are designed to help your body get back what it's lost, because the first 3 weeks of pills is tricking your body into thinking your pregnant (when your really not) just to keep your eggs from dropping. It does put a damper on things, trust me i've experienced it all. But first and foremost take care of yourself and your body!!!!

If you don't think it's the birth control and hormones messing it up, you can always buy a test at walgreens or cvs that will test your urine for a yeast infection or any other infection like that! (but not STD's).

And lastly, TALK TALK TALK TO YOUR GYNO AND MAKE A LIST OF QUESTIONS TO ASK THEM WHEN YOU GO FOR YOUR VISIT. THOSE VISITS ARE YOUR ONE TIME TO GET IT ALL OUT IN THE OPEN WITH SOMEONE WHO KNOWS BEST.

This is part of being a female! Don't let it ruin your nights, embrace it! Our periods are monthly because they clean out our systems of bacteria!

Good luck girls!

oh my goodness, so i just started taking birth control about three weeks ago. and i took them during my period, at the same time everyday. i really haven't had any side effects beside loss of appetite and stomach pains. but, brown discharge really? i never expected that to happen to me, and i am only on birthcontrol because of how bad my periods are. I am not sexually active, and never have been. So why the hell is brown sh*t coming out of my vagina? Personally, it grosses me out and i hate it. btw i am taking luestrinefe and everything has been fine minus that. And spotting happens so often its like i have that brown stuff one day, then not the other. And i cannot keep sacrificing all of my lovely underwear hahah but seriously i would rather have NORMAL discharge. but my periods are unbearable soo i dont know what to do... i just cant believe something brown is coming out of my hooha. Oh and i am sixteen ahh okay. atleast i am not the only one.

Oh my gosh!! I feel so much better now that I know I'm not the only one who feels that way! I'm on ortho tri-cyclin low also, and it happens all the time! I thought there was something wrong with me, but now that I know it's normal, I feel much better. Thanks to everyone who posted!

I feel so much better now. I have been on ortho low dose BC for about two weeks now and the brown c**p just started happening to me. I am sexually active so it kinda puts a damper on things. But seeing all these posts with girls with the same problem makes me feel loads better, and I mean LOADS better. I am a big worrier sometimes so all this information has really helped. Hopefully the ORTHO works for me :-)

"it doesn't say that it will be slimy half dried black clumps of old uterine lining discharging"
That line totally cracked me up. It's so true... Basically your period cleans you out so when you are on BC you have a "fake" period that doesn't always get everything and thus the yucky brown stuff. Oh and btw it is old blood (old blood is brown). This never happened to me on YAZ but now I'm on generic Seasonal (Quasense) and it happens all the time. Not having a period for a while does it to you I guess. One thing I've found that really helps is being diligent about when you take the pill. If you take it at the same exact time it tends to go better in general.

But, yeah, it's gross. You're not preggers! And if you are so worried about getting pregnant, maybe hold off on the sex? Just a thought. I mean, I'm about to got to law school and want a career so a baby would ruin my life so I fear it too, but I remember being 16... bad times, haha.

Also about killing the mood, I actually explained the whole uterine lining thing to my boyfriend and he was strangely accepting. If you are in a trusting relationship, then I think you'd be surprised what guys are willing to try to understand. (or maybe they will just do anything for sex... hah)

i have never taken birth control, been married for 9 yrs. my periods come pretty regularly, but different experience each time (sometimes light, heavy, bright red, almost black, etc.) so you see every month your menstral cycle can be effected by several things stress, diet, activities, hormone levels, etc. which then will change the length and color of your periods. so stopping BC might not fix it cause as i said i'm not on it, and experience it as well. i would however love for it to mean, for myself, pregnancy, cause we have been trying for our 3rd child for 2 yrs. i have endometriosis which makes it difficult. i would love any help anyone may offer with that!

I had no idea that you had to suffer through that when on birth control. The things I learn on this forum! Thanks for posting all the information--it was really helpful.
