I am a newly diagnosed diabetic and I have a concern about fasting.  I was wondering about how other people, namely Catholics, fast during days of mass?  I am thinking that it is going to pose a problem for me.  What if I pass out during mass?  I am worried that I won't be able to go.  I have to take Lantus insulin at night, every night, so in the morning, if I don't get anything to eat, I am sick and feel like passing out.  If I go to mass, I will definitely feel this way.  Of course, I am worried that other people that I go to church with will wonder where I am at if I don't attend.  I really don't want to tell them I can't fast because I get sick.  They will think I am trying to get out of it, or that it is an excuse.  So, here is my question.  Does any Catholic out there have any advice on how to not get sick from fasting?  Any answers would be appreciated.

I know that you should fast about one hour before mass, am I correct in saying so?  If this is true, you can eat something within one hour before the actual mass.  Just eat something with a lot of fiber in the morning and some protein to hold you over until mass is over.  A peanut butter sandwich made with whole wheat bread would be a good option or if you do not care for peanut butter, some eggs or other protein would stay in your stomach for a couple of hours so you can make it through the ceremony.  Are there any diabetic Catholics out there that have any experiences they would like to share?  How do you prepare for your morning mass so that you are not having hypoglycemic episodes or symptoms of fainting, hunger, or other uncomfortable feelings?
