I do have disc space narrowing at L5/S1, plus few herniated discs.

I have had a freeway motorcycle accident back in 2007. Broke 2 bones in my vertebrae (neck), got the brake handle in my thigh... I was 6 months in a "halo". Did some physical therapy sessions which did not help much. After 11 months of total recovery returned back to work in 2008. Now, for over 3 years I have been suffering with lumbar spine, lowback, sciatica, hip and leg pain. I do sleep 2-3 hours per night. Regular massages do help. I do have Vitamin D insufficiency and take vitamin D3 (2000 UI/per day). This past weekend spend 15 minutes each morning getting real vitamind D (sunlight) on my back lying on my belly. It seems to help. I have also started a "The Five Tibetan Rites _ Energy Rejuvenation Exercises" (look fot that video on youtube). Yet waiting for HMO approval to see an orthopedist.

Guest wrote:I have this too, as well as a few other problem areas in my back. If you have state health insurance as I do, the doctors will all tell you that youre fine, and that everyone has degenerating disks, and it's a natural process that everyone's body goes through! It hurts like hell, thats all I know, and I wish I coulod get some treatment for it!

You need to get to a chiropractor asap they can keep those areas aligned for you so arthritis does not set it in or whatever other conditions that can come from the L5 ,depending on what state you reside if you have medicade it can pay for chiropractor visits or if it has turned into a disability medicare will pay for your visits as your young and this may help you get back to normal and stop the disability trust me you DON'T WANT TO BE ON DISABILITY it pays nothing if your living on your own you wont be able to afford a car insurance lights rent electric and all other bills .unless you plan on living home and still you should help parents if you do they're not responsible for you after 18 and they should not carry you after 18 unless they choose to do so which is your business and theirs :)  GOOD LUCK

Have you tried chiropractors they do help i have been going to one for over 5 yrs on and off and has helped me to keep moving freely and if it wasn't for Dr Gondolpho I would not be able to touch my toes or bend at all ,I hope by the last part of your letter you are not talking about suicide neurologist today if they have been doctoring for over two yrs are useless they want easy money and will tell you need surgery and it will only result inmore pain and heart attacks and strokes Ive talked with plenty of people from different areas of the world who have had surgery and they have had strokes n heart attacks and had no signs of heart disease or enlargements , I can't tell you not to go through any surgery but check with a chiropractor as they specialize on the spine and bones .please keep me posted I would love to hear your success story !

I have the same/similar problem.  Mine stems from running and training for Marathons.  I found a few things which have helped with the pain, but not eliminated it.  To eliminate it I would probably have to stop running completely (in fact I did this for 2 months and the pain declined about 90% slowly but surely).

I take Magnesium and Calcium pills every few days, plus viatmin D.  I also reduced my running and replaced it with swimming.  I also used to always sleep on my right side - I notice when I sleep on my back or left side, there is a noticeable improvement the next day.

Good luck.

I have found another solution to my problem (which I think mostly stemsfrom running).
The solution is to do various forms of crunch situps.
By strengthening my stomache muscles, it helps to share the load off of the back. Several months later now, my back is quite good.

yeah, take your meds!!! I am 2 1/2 years into L5S1 degeneraton/ arthritis and I did not even begin to feel better until I submitted to taking my meds. YOU HAVE TO STOP THE PAIN CYCLE. Be cautious by not upping your dosage without talking to your doc.

don't waste your money on a chiropracter...number one thing is lose weight if you are over weight..second get a MRI done, an x-ray will show the spacing distances but the MRI will show more detail..remember that there are different types of MRI scan..third find a good doctor.
