I'm really confused by the pill. I've been on Aviane for a month (now on the hormone-less pills) and I have my period. Does this mean every first week of the month we should also use a condom, and am I protected while I am on my period? I haven't missed a pill and I take it at roughly the same time (between 7:30 am to 8:10 am).

No, you don't need a backup method. You're not likely to conceive during that week.
Aviane, like many BC's, makes it harder for sperm to get to the uterus and also harder for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus.
