Very late for this - but it is still a popular question in many sites. The taste is most likely caused by excess adrenaline... remember you are panicking, the fight or flight reponse creates massive amounts of adrenaline and that is the taste.

However, as said - tell your Dr about all your symptoms so they can give you the correct treatment and advice

I have panic attacks and I also feel strange taste of minty-numbness metalic in my mouth. I guess it must be somehow related.

Did anyone's problems start after having taken antibiotics? (within 3-4 months of taking)

A month ago I had severe chest pressure. BP was 200/168. I have never had that taste in my mouth in my life. I would not call it metallic. It was really bad. All I could think of is "Oh, this is what death tastes like." Of course, I do not know what it was. But I promise you my body was exuding some nasty stuff. Who knows. The "impending doom" comment could be right.

I was on Zoloft back in 2001 and came off after about a year and yes you do eventually start feeling normal again give it a month or two, probably less.

OMG!!! I've been diagnosed with agoraphobia, panic disorder, ptsd, and depression. I was taking Xanax for 20 years since 1988 , the last 8 years clonazepam . A new doctor at my clinic told me she wouldn't prescribe the medicine for me stating that "it was all in my head" (no sh*t sherlock). I've been a nervous wreck for the past 3 months. A lot of it is trying to find out what's causing my mouth to taste like sour, bitter, nasty, dog poop. Every test has been done. The dentist, primary doctor who took blood, prescribed omeprizole, magic mouthwash, stuff for thrush, amune disorders. GI doctor who also took blood, and gave me an endoscopy didn't find anything, and he wants to take out my gallbladder. I try telling them it came on a couple of weeks after I stopped taking my medicine, but they don't want to hear about that, it has to be medical. I've dropped 20 pounds since stopping, I can hardly eat, food doesn't just taste bad it really hurts. I bite my tongue when talking, bite my lips and cheeks when chewing. If I'm not loosing my head over one it's the other. I just wish someone would listen.

I've done a bit of research on this because I've experienced it a good number of times. I noticed it happens when I experienced a sudden rush of anxiety, and also right before I have to vomit. The rush of anxiety doesn't bring upon nausea, but the metallic taste, often with accompanying salivation is the same.

I came across a post on reddit that I think sheds some light on what some people are experiencing. It's speaking specifically about the taste before vomiting, but I'm under the impression that this same biological response occurs for some people when they experience a rush of anxiety/adrenaline. Here it is:

"The pH of gastric acid is ~2.0 which can cause damage to the esophageal lining, the oral mucosa and teeth. Our bodies produce a protective layer of mucous along the digestive tract which has a pH of ~8.5, weakly alkaline. Additionally, our saliva is normally weakly acidic in nature (pH ~6.8). Prior to vomiting, chemical signals are sent to various trigger zones in the brain which prepare us for the event. One such signal induces the salivary glands to produce large amounts of alkaline saliva which coats the mouth to protect it from the acid of the stomach contents. Additionally, large amounts of alkaline mucous are produced along the esophagus to protect it as well, making it difficult to spit out those last bits of "yuck" after you're finished.

So what some people may interpret as a vague metallic taste, I think, could be a sudden change in the pH of your saliva which is normally a biological response which prepares you for regurgitation.

You are probably one of the most articulate people I've ever read something from on a message board! So smart! I just felt the need to tell you that and also that I'm pretty confident you can get over any fears or anxieties that are in the way of you living your dreams!

I had a "fight or flight" moment, as soon is flight kicked in my gum felt hot, and the matalic taste was there, but as soon as I felt I was in the clear it was gone. Could it of been the adrenaline?

I have had this happen twice now in last two days, both times during a strong burst of adrenaline, one when I was almost struck by a car and the other when I was badly startled.. never before yesterday tho...

I have gotten the same taste in my mouth before but not from anxiety it usually happens when I’m angry for example there was a time where I got into a fight and as soon as my adrenaline rush kicked in from the fight starting I got the metal taste in my mouth this wasn’t the 1st it’s happened and every time that metal taste was the last thing I remember it’s like it erases a small part of my memory of what happened during the fight . later that day my friend said I body slammed the guy I fought and said I had him on the ground punching him and I have no memory of that happening I barley remember it getting physical I don’t even remember going home after it happened
