Had hemorroidectomy 2 weeks ago. When is it safe to exercise(walk)? What about sitting? My job requires me to drive 6-8 hours a day. Will this be detrimental to my recovery? I don't want to do anything to make them come back. I so anxious about returning to work. Help!!
Walking usually speeds recovery. Some people are walking within 3 days after surgery. By 2 weeks I could walk about 3 flights of stairs without any issues. I tried to use swelling as an indicator of if I was walking too much. When you are swelling, it will cause discomfort afterward. You should be able to associate the discomfort caused by swelling after 2 weeks. If you aren't swelling and aren't bleeding, you are most likely doing fine. Just don't start out walking 5 miles the first time...start with maybe half a block; if no issues after an hour or 2, walk a whole block. If you start feeling discomfort from swelling, back off a bit the next day.

Sitting is easier in a recliner at first, so you aren't sitting with your weight directly on your surgical site. The same applies as above. After 2 weeks I could sit in an office chair without too much suffering. A pillow does make it more comfortable...just don't do the donut pillows - they pull against the surgical site and cause blood pooling down there.
