Actually holep doctors are few. There are none in Dallas, TX. I had to drive 140 miles to Temple, TX. The procedure is hard to learn. But it’s the only procedure adequate for a large prostate. Plus it keeps sexual function except for retrograde ejaculation. BTW, as long as no bleeding and your urethra is not too sore, you can have sex with your spouse around the two week time with no issues. We waited until day 17.

I am three months post HoLEP surgery. Everything is fine except I still have incontinence and have to wear a thin pad. I try to remember to do Kegels, but often forget. My bladder was stretched out a lot before the surgery due to urine retention (3 liters of urine was drained in ER two weeks before HoLEP), so I figure that may be why I still suffer leakage. I just wonder if anyone else had this issue extending past three months.

Hi, I was 72 when I had my surgery. I had a catheter for 5 months prior to my surgery. The bottom line is that I had inconvenience for 6 to 9 months. I am 76 now and have some leaking while I workout. I use a shield during my workout. The Kegels are a must for me. I just make them a part of my routine. The length of incontinence is different for everyone. There are many factors involved, your age, your physical condition and the amount of prostate that was removed. I think you are doing great.

Thanks, Buster. It’s encouraging to hear that most leakage finally went away except when you work out. I need to be more diligent with Kegels. I am 68 and had a catheter for two weeks before surgery. I can’t imagine the suffering you had with having one for five months. I hope I never have another catheter again, not even in surgery. But only God knows.

I am sure you will get along well. It is primarily lifting that can cause some leakage. Keep doing the Kegels!

Hi everyone, I'm from the UK but am resident in Japan and am going to go ahead and get the holep surgery here because I'm covered by the insurance. I'll need to go to Tokyo to get this done and my local doctor will refer me to another hospital but has not given me a list of hospitals that will do the procedure or suggested one. So since it appears that the experience of the surgeon is all important I thought I would reach out here to see if anyone reading has experience in Japan.

I am a 79 yo in excellent physical condition. I had HoLEP surgery performed by Dr Joel Funk of Banner Univ South in Tucson for a 128g prostate at noon on 04/18/2021. I remained in the hospital overnight, catheter removed at 10a on 19th, completed a full bladder discharge at 4p and was released, drove wife and I home (2.5 hours). 95% recovered by day 5 with normal activities excluding physical and sex. Discontinued diaper after 1 week and pads after 2 weeks. Blood in urine gradually subsided until none after 3 weeks.

Had a follow-up visit at 3 weeks. 121g of 128g was removed, biopsy of removed material showed no cancer, cleared to resume sex. Reverse ejaculation to bladder diminishes enjoyment only slightly.
Nightly urinary visits usually once, sometimes none. Stream is like the teenage years. When stream stops, bladder is completely empty. Amazing!!!

Results have been beyond expectations. With HoLEP, it is absolutely critical to have surgery performed by a top surgeon who does a large volume. Do Kegel exercises prior to surgery and drink a lot of water following surgery.

Man, your doing great. I am 68 and had HoLEP six months and still need a light pad. Now I am getting more serious on the kegels. Still can’t get used to retroactive ejaculation. I notice my climax seems more intense than before, even though nothing comes out. It’s encouraging To see one at 79 still going strong. I have wondered how long I could enjoy sex with My wife before my body stops working-lol.

That's amazing. I can't imagine going home the same day. I would imagine your urethra is quite tender, It took quite a beating if you think about it. Make sure you take it easy for a while. The insides of your prostate have been removed, so you don't want to push it. Let it heal up. It sounds like quite a success.
