Good choice with Dr. Lingeman-please let us know how it goes-- I also studied the HoLep and other procedures and really relied on this site.
The local urologist are OK, but do not have a clue about HoLep. All they seem to know is Turp & Open surgery.
Dr. Lingeman is simply the best along with his staff and hospital. I would have paid 'out of pocket' ; but, after fighting with my health insurance, they finally paid. I am pleased with the result-it was the best possible outcome.
He described it as peeling an orange in that he enucliates the prostate lobes and leaves the shell-- and it is almost the same as the open surgery. However, it was surgery and the night in the hospital with a 3 way catheter was not fun. Bill in CA
You have made an excellent decision. His whole staff is filled with wonderful people. Dr Lingeman Is an excellent Dr and a very caring man. just me
I am scheduled to have Holep with Dr. John Wei at the University of Michigan. Does anyone have knowledge of his success with the Holep procedure? I don't think he has done more than 50-80 of them since he started the procedure in 2010. I would appreciate any feedback. Would 50-80 Holep procedures be enough to handle unusual things that come up during the surgery and would doing 50-80 be enough to be considered proficient in performing the surgery? When I read of Dr. Lingeman peforming over 2,500 of them it makes me wonder if 50-80 over four years are enough to be comfortable with as a patient
Hi Jack, I am one of Dr Lingeman`s patients . The HOLEP procedure changed my life. for the better. I would not be afraid of calling Dr Lingeman `s office to find out his opinion . just me
Hi Jack, I Googled your DR to find out about him . You can do the same. He does have some impressive credentials. Once again, I would call Dr Lingeman`s office and ask if the number of surgeries he has performed is enough to be proficient. I would not be afraid of the procedure at all. Just make sure you have the right Dr. In the beginning, Dr Lingeman only had one under his belt. All the best , just me
This is Rick in KY. I had my HoLEP surgery Friday morning by Dr. Lingeman. Came home Saturday (5 hour drive). After catheter was removed, first pee was slow. The next four much stronger stream. All bloody as expected but did include some clots. Little painful but not over the top. Last couple of pees have been weak stream. Dr. L said it could take a few days to get a strong pee. I'm hoping the current weak stream is not from clots I'm not passing. Dr. L took out about 50-percent of my prostate which was around 55-60 grams (approximate). Mine certainly wasn't the biggest he has seen, but the blockage was the key. I was told to drink anything I wanted but I have read on other sites to stay away from caffeine. Any advice? Anyone who could share their post HoLEP experience would be appreciated. Or if anyone wants to ask me any specific questions, feel free. Dr. And staff were wonderful at IU Health.
Who performed your HoLEP?
Hi Rick! Thanks for checking in. As yiu may have read - if you went back almost 2 years - I did not have my surgery by Dr. Lingerman. I had it done here in Philly by Dr. Akhil Das who is a contemporary of Dr. L in the HoLep field. He performs many but only on Thursdays and Fridays so he can see other patients. I was happy with my results and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Das. (And I didn't have any travel as hostital is - literaly - 15-20 blocks from my house and was fully covered by Medicare. I see Dr. D annually and next is in December.
The one comon thing after the surgery is intontenance - which can last as much as 3-4 months (usually less). The solution is simple and easy: Use IC pads (shields) that yiu can buy at local drugstore. Honestly I'm not sure I ever had leakage but they were there JUST in case.
Here's to a speedy recovery. Enjoy those nights of not having to get up three-four times!
Steve
Thanks Steve-
Did you drink lots of water after surgery?
I don't remember drinking more than usual and I did not cut down on caffeine.
Hi Rick, I was thinking of you on the day of your surgery. You are probably slow due to the fact your prostate is smaller. Mine was 110 grams and Dr Lingeman took all but 18 grams. I shot out like a cannon. I would steer away from caffeine for a while as it does make you urinate . Good old water is a good choice. You can learn a lot from looking at the past entries on this site. Ive been here almost a couple years. Glad to help encourage in any way. Dr Lingeman and staff are a special group of people. all the best to you .just me
I would check this site because this issue has been addressed before here and on other sites( as well as in some scholarly articles availble on the web).--50-80 operations is probably not enough to be really proficient.--especially over a 4 year period. I felt so comfortable with Dr. Lingeman. it was an easy decision. Why have any reservations about your surgeon regarding this very important procedure? Bill in CA
Hi jwb43
I had HoLEP three days ago. Sounds like your prostate size was very similar to mine. About 60g. Although I voided fine after catheter was removed, I am struggling to void now. Just dribbled out about 100 ml. Did you get any further explanation of why a smaller prostate can experience this?
Hi rhesterb, I recall in my research all prostates experience trauma with the surgery. The smaller prostates are not as open as the much larger prostates. As the swelling goes down your flow should improve. Strange as it may sound The larger prostates seem to do better. If you have questions contact your Dr . I called Dr Lingeman`s office several times . Did Dr Lingeman do your surgery?
Yes, Dr. L performed my surgery. I actually went back to him today (3 days post surgery) because of the lack of flow. I called his office and they asked me to come in. By the time I returned, my flow slightly improved, but Dr. L examined me and everything looked good. He irrigated my bladder and told me to expect improvement. I am doing much better voiding. Dr. L and staff were great!
