Mirena will cause heavy bleeding, spotting, and irregular period in the first 3-6 months. And the emotions arent cause by the iud. The hormones go to the uterus and the uterus only. Think about it, that little thing has enough hormones to last up to 5 yrs. So the dosage is only enough to effect the uterus and the uterus alone. It can not make u gain weight. And it can not cause acne. It can actually help ppl with acne. And lots of ppl who have problems with an iud, get it put in them by a family doctor and not an OBGYN. My obgyn has never had any of his patients complain about mirena. We all love it. And none of his patients have had the mirena perforate through the uterus. So if u are trying ti get it done, make sure u get it done by a specialist with a high success rate.

I got mirena taken out 3 months ago because my husband and i wanted to start trying for a baby. I am now experiencing constant brown discharge. I can't find anything on the internet or or the mirena site about symptoms after the removal. Any advise?

I am so glad to hear that many women have had the same experiences i have and the feedback given has strengthened my decision to have my Mirena taken out. I am not generally a heavy bleeder, so I am hoping I won't have too much trouble afterwards. Will keep you posted! :-) Thanks girls :-D

After giving birth to my for year old son, my gynae advised me to try Mirena, I was reluctant because was not sure is I still want to try for another child. At the end of last we decided that the two boys are enough and there will not be addition to the family. I thought it was a perfect time to insert a Mirena. I spoke to my husabnd and had our first appointment with the gynae, got a prescription, got the Mirena and had it inserted in March 2011. I started by being emotional and sensitive, low self drive and moody. I noticed gain weight then started diet and exercise. Three months from the date I had inserted Mirena I researched the effects of the product and many women had gained wait within the first six month, I had already gaineg 8kg in 4months. I had it removed 30 June 2011, 2 minute painless procedure and no bleeding. I was very relieved.

HI. I too have Mirena. This thing was put in November 2007 just after (2 months) my twin boys were born. I have noticed that one month I have a heavy period then the next it's little. In almost 4 yrs I have not gone a month without a period!!! I'm almost 39 and don't wish to have any more children (11 & 4 yr old twins..I'm a twin myself) I still look like I'm 8 months pregnant with my boys..which gets pretty annoying when people ask me when I'm due????? I ONLY gained 7lbs with my twins...losing all my weight in the beginning and having gestational diabetes. Now 4 yrs have just about past I have ONLY lost 5 lbs....I have changed my eating habits, watching what I eat and I just can't seem to lose weight. I suffer from depression, low self-esteem issues and again diabetes. Just a beef ~ thinking of getting it removed and not using again.

wow Iv experienced the exact same thing! I went four years feeling depressed. I put on 70 LBs, Miserable mood swings and terrible head aches. I had two doctors tell me the same thing about the mirrenna not being the cause of my weight gain. around the 4 year mark I started feeling more like myself I started shedding my weight with no effort. I believe it was because the hormones were running out too. I will never use birth control again other then condoms the side effects are just not worth it to me. I also no longer trust the doctors to be honest with me when it comes to birth control their main job is to push contraceptives no matter the cost.

Hi
I had a Mirena iud for over a year. My Gyno had difficulty inserting it and it was very painful and I bled alot at the time of insertion. This did create a fear of removal.
However after experiencing many of the side effects you listed above, I removed the Mirena myself. I simply tugged on the cords and it came out effortlessly. I suspect that it had moved and so was easily removed.
I would not recomend your wife removing it yourself, I think she should go to her DR. But removing it was as simple as removing a tampon and painless in my experience.
I am slowly starting to feel much better and my body is returning to its normal healthy and responsive self once again.

i hope this helps.

Hello All,

So glad I found these forums.  After reading the experiences everyone had I am definitely not going to use this form of birth control despite the high recommendation from my obgyn.   I think after researching for over one month ALL birth control choices the best one seems the Lady Comp/Pearly computer from Germany which is totally natural and 99.3% effective and has not bad reviews and it can be used for other stuff like monitoring your period if you are close to menopause like myself.
That would be my choice.
To have a device in my uterus it did not sound too thrilling in the first place, because it just feels so unnatural. Reading about the bad stories for both partners during sex, it is simply unconceivable for me to opt for something so risky.
The IUD  BC still has weight gain issues, which is something I cannot absolutely deal with it since I compete in bodybuilding and must maintain a very low weight.  But the health problems and side effects all these methods have are so unreal and serious that I cannot discard the evidence and

It is interesting because if one limits the knowledge only to what your doctor will tell you it sounds all so great and easy.  You have to wonder sometimes about the medical profession.  My doctor is really nice and I trust her.  But to trust is good to a certain degree.
I am so glad I do my research.

I had mirena put in at the beginning of May, 2012. Im 46, obviously finished having kids and I was/am beginning to experience the not-too-nice side effects of perimenopause. That meant I was getting very heavy periods, sometimes with a 5 day break in between them and then WHAM! another period lasting 15 days. I was drained.

My OB/gyn wanted to put my on mirena two years ago, but I went online and read horror stories about constant bleeding etc. I declined.  Two years later I was back in her office. I couldn't TAKE it any more. She installed the Mirena.  Putting it in was nothing more than uncomfortable. I went before work, popped a few advil first and it took no more than 15 minutes.  I had spotting all day and some menstrual cramps but I drove an hour to work and worked all day no issue.

Spotting continued with no other symptoms except that i was "aware" that the mirena was there...that was odd.  Spotting lasted continuously for about 3 weeks and soon rolled into what I guess was my period.  Period lasted 16 days...with no sign of letting up. Then, one day it just stopped. I had a few weeks of no spotting and then seemed to get my period AGAIN.  I had very very very sore breasts and super sensitive nipples.

Sex...no pain, no discomfort. Partner felt no strings.

In June, I got my period again...lasted about 16 days but was so light and faint I didn't even need a pantyliner. No other symptoms.

It's now coming up on 3 months and I have no signs of pms or impending period.  I haven't experienced any other symptoms such as weight gain, hair loss or headaches.

So far I have to say that although the constant spotting was a HUGE pain and I couldn't stand it, now at 3 months I have nothing. No period, no pms symptoms and no spotting or bleeding.  The only "side effect" I can muster and I could be wrong about this one...is that my hair has grown like crazy. Must have grown an inch a month since getting Mirena. Ditto my finger nails. I have no idea if it's related or not but it's worth noting that while pregnant I experienced the same thing so that just may be ME.

If this month goes by without spotting or bleeding then I can report that I am 100% satisfied. This is for sure something I should have done years ago.

The information on Mirena is pretty comprehensive.  I'd encourage all women considering Mirena to read the info your doctor will give you. Remember, the internet is full of horror stories about everything...including childbirth. It's not right for all women...just as most BC isn't right for ALL women.

It's difficult to search for other women's experiences with Mirena who aren't postpartum. Having had 6 kids myself, I have to say that that DOES change everything.  It takes months and months for your body to balance out after pregnancy and childbirth so much of what you may be experiencing is tied in to that.

For women like me, done with kids and perimenopause it's wonderful. No accidental pregnancies and no periods. I plan to have  a new one installed in 5 yrs and ride out the whole menopause thing.

That's my experience ....truly hope it helps.

Considering the cost of this device I am not sure I really want to risk it.

My OBGYN said the same thing of yours and told me to get it. She really pushes for this IUD. I am 47 yo. I don't think I am in menopause, yet. Still can't take that chance and the horror stories are too many. I have trouble wearing tampons as well. So I foreseen real trouble with this. Also all my life have very short periods like 2 to 3 days with one day brake within the period no much pain. Yes the first day is bad. My whole issue is having something releasing hormones in my body. The copper IUD sounds just as bad.

I do want my period though. I know many women find it a nuisance but I have learn to cope with it as part of being a woman and I guess the duration makes a huge difference.

I agree - not inexpensive investment but it's good for 5 years that's really only $10 a month for complete piece of mind. For me, it offered all I wanted. No pregnancy, no symptoms and no periods. I never used to have issues with cycle. I was once very regular, bleed for 4 days no big deal...as I got older and in particular once I hit around 42 that all changed for me. My periods were never ending and completely unpredictable. Im a happy Mirena user. Hope you find what suits you best.

I have had mirena 3 years I have had mutiple issues since then.. In which my ob/gyn raved about.. I started having major issues around the one year mark.. I was in and out of the emergency room and my Dr. office.. And being as with economy I no longer have insurance have wracked up alot of medical bills. From over 20 kidney infections.. Over 5 urinary tract infections.. Which they said couldn't be related.. Yet I have never had medical issues prior to this cursed iud. I luckily have an appointment tomorrow to have it removed.. In hopes it has not permanently effected me as it has some other people.. And i'm not saying that its bad for everyone but it is bad for me.. Pin the last year and a half I have gained 75 lbs.. Now alot of people go it could be just weight gain.. But I have been the same size since I was a freshman in high school and i'm an obsessive healthy eater and up until the last few months I ran a min of three miles a day and stayed keeping in mind that the last two months I have only gained about a pound.. I'm depressed Moody I cry constantly now which isn't me.. I tell my husband he hates me and it has almost ruined our marriage. And as fast as the breasts let me tell you being a woman of 5 feet 6 inchs I have alwsys been chesty at 36 D but in the last year i'm up to 36 DD and that is snug I just refuse to buy another bra.. They hurt all the time. I have flutter feelings in my stomach like the first movements of a fetus.. It really has worried me not to mention the cramps that are worse then any contractions ever.

If I have any advice for any one out there please read into any thing and every thing you put in your body weather its iud or pills shots medicine in general you have no idea what some if not most of this stuff is and all it has done to alot if us is proof enough that this is not something we should have in or body. Thanks to all others who have posted good and bad..
