I thought this was what I had, but it turns out this is what doctors tell you you have when really they don't know. Mine is a hiatial hernia. It just feels like I have to burp all the time. It gets worse as the day goes on and also under stress. I probably got it from lifting something heavy or straining on the toilet. It's driving me crazy and I am still researching ways to fix it that do not require surgery.

It is reflux. It's "silent reflux." I've researched it. It didn't have the classic symptoms of acid reflux. It's GERD. Lump in the throat feelings, burping, constant throat clearing, sometimes burning in your ears from acid. Medicating causes bone loss. Use kefir and kombucha. I've been medication free for years after researching alternate remedies.

I get this often now since I started new meds (axetazolamide). If I can't burp and that lump is there but won't come out (starts hurting too) I push against my throat on the right ride (even against the lower part of my adam's apple) it pushes it out. Such a relief!!! Hope that helps.

Came across this post as I seem to be having a similar issue. As the pressure builds up I sometimes burp but no burning sensations, just annoying stuff. Anyways looking at the anatomy the esophagus it kind of travels in behind the heart and lungs, so any laying on my back seemed to worse it aka going to sleep at night. I've found some relief from laying on my stomach, head on a pillow (try not to activate any neck muscles. Do this for around 10-15 min or until you get relief. I wiggle around every now and then, use bug breaths here and there and basically just use gravity to take pressure off the esophagus. This is not a tried and true method just something that I found helped me. My esophagus went crazy and got a lot of burps out so just ride the waves as they come. I also read some about cricopharyngeal spasms on Google and it shouldn't be anything to worry about but its definitely an annoyance. Hopefully this provides some relief for y'all.

Did you ever find out what it is? The way you described it is exactly how I feel! It's horrible and it has become more frequent. I also feel like I have difficulty breathing too.

Hi,
I too have a problem of blocked burp feeling and it results headache especially if I sleep right after meals or eating anything. I just want to share my simple remedy from my experience that helps me expel burp.
I found the easiest way to release the burp is to place both your hands at the back of your neck near the skull and do gentle massage while keeping your head/neck straight up. Doing this in standing position is better.

The other thing you can do at the same time or separately is to move your shoulders backwards and towards the center of backbone/neck.

I am a software developer and realized that this symptom is caused by constant tilted position of head towards monitor/laptop causing strains in your neck muscles.

I don't know the scientific reason for it but this helped me a lot to get relieved from burps and my headaches are very much reduced. Before finding this, I used to walk a lot after meals and before going to sleep in order to avoid headaches.

Also, this is analogous to newborn babies who need to burp out right after feeding otherwise they get very uncomfortable and cry. A gentle massage on their back and neck with their straight up position helps them release burp.

Please try this simple and effective remedy and let me know if it helps anyone.

I've had the exact same sensation for almost a week now. At first I thought it was the heatwave (started on the same day as the sensation) and that it made it hard for me to digest. I already have many digestive problems caused mostly by anxiety and intolerances to many foods (possible IIS) but even eating healthier or less didn't make it go away. It hurts just enough to annoy me and I don't know what to eat anymore. After reading all the comments here, I did some research of my own and found the most plausible explanation for me is GERD or acid reflux. Along with the tight burping sensation, I sometimes get heartburn too (once or twice a week) . If you already have digestive issues, it's probably the same for you, although I'm sure stress makes it worse. Don't take antiacids as this will make it worse in the long term. Look up GERD and natural alternatives.

What I'm going to do is cut out carbs completely for a few days and see how I feel. A low-carb diet is recommended to make your stomach acid normal again (please research to know why that is, it's very interesting) and I will be back with results for people who are still looking for answers.
