I just looked this up because I am going through the same thing. After the research I did I do believe it has to do with stress. Some of us hold stress in certain parts of our bodies than others. Some people's back tighten when they're stressed, some hold it in their shoulders, some in their neck and throat (like me). Here's 4 things that have helped me a lot:
1) Deep breaths and trying to untighten all that feels tight. Look up, close eyes and take in deep breaths. Basically stretching the neck from the tightness youre feeling.
2) Neck rolls and breath. I know it feels like its in your throat, but it can be in other places that youre having issues.
3) Open your mouth (the long way, not wide) and feel the stretching in the jaw bones. DO NOT strain it, but hold it open for as long as you can the, slowly let it go. Repeat as much as you like.
4) Also, look up a lymph drainage massage (youtube is great). Not only do they help remove wrinkles, but they also can help toxins that could be in the lymph nodes and face and helping them drain can loosen the tight feeling. Try this next time it should help like it does for me. Hope this helps someone :)

I have a mild case of feeling like my throat has an obstruction though not a total blockage. Mainly I have noticed this when eating bread - feels hard to swallow - apologies to post here if not relevant to night time closure. Also my lungs feel slightly sore, I am coughing and choking when I drink more than usual and I am tired.
Looking at an anatomical picture of the throat I notice that the trachea (wind/air pipe) and espohagus (where the food goes) are one tube till below the tonsils then split.
Given my medical history - a specialist has told me I probably have mild GERD (acid reflux) plus my father has been on medication for years for this condition - my current theory for my symptoms is as follows:
My tonsils and possibly other parts of the tube from my mouth to my trachea and esophagus are inflamed from the acid coming from my stomach. Swelling due to inflammation is physically partially closing part of this shared tube. A very small amount of acid may be finding it's way into my lungs, inflaming them.
Based on this theory I am going to try going on a strict GERD reducing diet and see if this helps.
Wish me luck and good luck to you!
