Is your chest slightly indented? Pectoral excavatum might cause this. I'm trying to survey to see if people suffering from this have slight indents in their chests. When did you first notice it? Also have you noticed any patterns at all including: exercising, seasonal, etc...? Finally, did you used to drink much and or drink energy drinks such as Venom, full throttle, 5 hour energy?

This has only happened to me when I was asleep.  I wake up because I am struggling to breathe and it feels like my throat is closing and sometimes it completely closes.  The difference is, that I feel paralyzed when it happens.  I can't move and so can't reach for a glass of water or even reach over to wake my husband up.  I feel completely alone, helpless and terrified.  It ALWAYS happens this way with me.  I'm always unable to move when it happens.  Has anyone ever had this paralysis happen to them?

OMG I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one with this random throat. Closing problem. I know you all had this conversation a year ago but this just started happening to me so I decided to research. Today was the second time in about 3wks that it's happened to me. At least this time I was at work with alot of people to try and help me breathe. But about 3wks ago I was asleep and I awoke to my throat closing, so scary, and I couldn't breathe for about 1-2 minutes. But felt like forever. I got out of bed and made my way to my parents bdrm gasping the whole time and trying to tell myself to breathe slower but that's hard to do when you're in the situation. And just like some of you said, my eyes were running water too. I'm definitely going to the doctor now.

My throat closed last night i had to go to er because my throat closed while i was eating a pork chop i thought i got a pork chop bone stuck in my throat... It happened before with corn dog a couple years ago... But i have to tell you when your throat closes it feels like you are going to die you go in shock, numb, wheeze, spit up etc...  My dr took a biopsy last night with a endoscopy woke up throat still hurting... and today it feels like it is trying to close again...

I also know not pertaining to my situation if you wake up choking at night you need to talk to your dr about sleep apnea...

Mine started out of now and would wake me up and I feel like I was having a heart attack and radiate around my jawl line. It was discover after a Barrem Swallow that my esophageal was like a ink pen instead of a tube and it was only a pen whole opening. Now I have to have scope done to see how bad it is damage and to see if it only cause by acid and if it damage to bad I have to have another surgery. Just amke sure you get a second opinion. Ok a huge cause of this throat closing problem occurs in people who have pectoral excavatum. Do to the indent it cause us to have slight asthma and slightly compresses on our esophagus. This is very common but most doctors won't know about it because you will mostly be seeing throat doctors and they don't go outside of their specialty area. Get your chest indent checked and get that fixed and I promise you will never experience the throat closing sensation again. In the meantime do chest breathing exercises and the sensation will minimize.

You should get your thyroid checked for nodules. They need to do an ultrasound to do that. Explain your problem to your primary care doctor and he/she will likely write you an order for an ultrasound.
