I have experienced similar issues with the Sertraline (generic Zoloft) feeling "stuck" high in the chest and burning with extreme discomfort. It typically lasts 2-3 hours.

What I've learned: take 1/2 pill at a time, with 1/2 hr or longer break between taking each half.
Take while standing up with a full glass of milk or water (never coffee, soda, etc.!).
Sit calmly: do not lie down or exert yourself within an hour or so after taking each half.

Even with these precautions, I still experience the problem occasionally, so I am going to start taking Maalox or Mylanta along with it. My pharmacist also recommends a longer-term solution such as Prilosec, but I'm going to have a physician check everything out first.

Yeah, I take Doxycycline Hyclate for acne, and whenever I don't take it with water this happens. It is really painful for a few days to swallow and burp , but it doesn't last too long normally. Temporarily, it obviously feels better to take small bites and chew your food thoroughly. In my experience meats and starchy foods make it feel worse. I totally get the upper body pain though. Sometimes the pain radiates down through my arms. From what I've read of yours, it sounds pretty serious, and you should call a doctor.

I have had the same issue with Sertraline! It's so hit and miss for me. Quick question, are yours blue or white? My doctor thought I might have an allergic reaction to the coating, so I tried to switch to the white coating but I don't think they have them for the 50 mg tablets.

If you read the fine print on the Doxycycline it will warn you that taking the pill late or right before bed has caused esophagus ulceration in some people. My son was prescribed this same thing and told by the Dr. he could take it any time, with or without food. Well, he took it at bedtime and ended up with 7 esophagus ulcers!!! It was the most horrible night of his life and he could not even drink water! The Dr. who prescribed it never even apologized after the whole situation was over and cost us thousands besides the pain. Some MD's are so very incompetent and that fact comes from a survey asked of MD's! Hope you heal very rapidly!!

I've been on doxycycline for a while now and it's the second time this has happened to me, the pain is unbareable and feels as if something is trying to escape my chest cavity. This has happened before and the pain lasted 4-5 days because the pill had disolved in my oesophagus leading to an ulcer. Stick to less acidic foods and no alcohol or smoking. It'll only make the pain much worse

It's acid reflux. I took Doxycycline when I was a teenager and I always felt a lump in my esophagus if I didn't take it with food. You HAVE to take it with food, no exceptions. I got nauseated from it and threw up once. Acid reflux can do some serious damage to your esophagus, that's why you were in pain for longer than expected.

Hello everyone, I had the same problem of swallowing a vitamin pill the other day which seemed to have gotten lodged in my esophagus and started causing a great deal of discomfort in my chest the whole day and later started causing pain in my upper back between my shoulder blades each time I swallowed something as simple as my siliva. The discomfort was unbearable and had me more worried than I cared to have been. I actually read a few of your complaints on this forum and feedbacks regarding diagnosis those of you got from doctors and from what I read all our symptoms seem similar and follow the traces of hiatus hernia. I went online to find at home remedies that at relive the issue. I did an exercise I watched on YouTube and after doing the routine it seemed to have relieved a lot of the discomfort and pain although it didn't get rid of the issue it did however help. I also found another website with 10 natural remedies as well that one can intake to help the problem. I chose to do one out of the ten suggestions and it helped a bit too which was put half a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water and drink all at once (though it didn't mention if the water should be cold or hot, I just went ahead and used lukewarm water). All this was enough for me to feel comfortable enough to get some sleep but it did not take it away completely. This morning, I woke up with slight discomfort so I decided I needed a good bowel movement to empty out my stomach a bit (pure yogurt works for me) I had my yogurt and in an hour I passed stool and all the discomfort is completely gone. I hoping this info might help you guys as well.

I couldn't link the video for the exercise but just Google 'How to fix a hiatus hernia - Dr. David Williams'

This might sounds counter-intuitive but it helped me, try standing up, lift your arms try to touch the ceiling, when they are as high as possible take a couple of deep breaths and cough twice. Repeat this action a couple of times.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. My pain has been increasing the last 24 hours and I was about ready to go to the ER. I had no idea the medication (doxycycline) would have such a side effect. I began doubling per my physician and never would have thought twice about it. You are a amazing for sharing and saving me time and money.

The trachea (windpipe) is not lubricated and the pill no matter how small will not usually dissolve in a short amount of time and can even cause burns in the throat or lungs if it gets that far or worse. Best to go to the emergency room if youre having chest pain and are unable to cough the pill up.
