I have Ankylosing Spondylitis. I suffer frequently from a tense swollen feeling in my feet. It occurs in the upper foot bilaterly. It makes bending my toes painful. Pain radiates up to the arch. At the same time my feet and toes are cold to touch and feel. My calf and foot muscles spasm lightly when these symptoms are present as if I had walked miles. Any idea what is cause this strange swollen feelings? ?

Hello there,

Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory disease which can cause some of the vertebrae in your spine to fuse together.

Unfortunately this fusing makes the spine less flexible and this can result in a hunched posture. There is even more severe case of ankylosing spondylitis which can make it impossible for a person to lift their head high enough to see forward.

Ankylosing spondylitis affects men more often than women and signs and early symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis usually begin in early adulthood.

Inflammation can occur in other parts of the body as well. For the time being unfortunately there is no cure for ankylosing spondylitis and treatments are focused on decreasing  pain and reducing symptoms.

I have no pain. It just happens when I get up for only a few minutes. I did break my 5th metatarsal on that foot over a year ago.
