I've had this for years, black smudges that you only see if you blink looking at a white cloud or white wall. I call them Sky Blinkers Syndrome. My present one I've had 3 weeks, like a semi circular band below my centre of vision. If you've had your eyes properly examined and they can't find anything then this is stress/anxiety related. Unfortunately eye doctors are looking for organic things abd this is not organic it's to do with anxiety affecting the nervous system something eye doctors don't understand, they keep trying to convince you it's floaters which of course it isn't. My present episode started when I returned to a place where I had a stressful time 2 years previous and was fearing it. Sure enough on the second day I started to notice a shimmer on hirizontal edges, this faded after a week but has left this dark crescent shadow, I'm blinking like a madman now but can't see it. I've had them before, they will go of their own accord in time, if you accept them they will go faster, THEY ARE NOT SIGHT THREATENING.
Other people talking about flashes of light round the oeriphery of their vision: this us the vitrious jelly pulling on the retina, have it looked at but if you get the o.k. from the eye doctor then just accept it, it's not sight threatening. But if you get larger flashes elsewhere get them checked out quickly.

Just a therory on why the flash happens. I only get this when I'm dehydraated from exertion or after a colonoscopy when I'm dehydrated from the Electrolyte/prugative It only happens in bright light when I blink or flip my sunglasses up so my iris has to contract. I think it has something to do with the muscles in the iris contrating to make the hole smaller when the eye is exposed to bright light in combination with a temporary electrolyte imblalance caused by the dehydration. The spot only stays as long as it takes the muscle of the iris to contract.

I've had these dark shadows when blinking for many years, they come and go. Had one for the past month since returning to a place where 2 years previously I had two scintilating scotomatas in one day (the visual aura of migraine but without the headache). I was very anxious and suddenly noticed a shimmet effect in bright shiney surfaces, this shimmer is a wellknown anxiety symptom. After a week the shimmer went but has left a sickle shaped black shadow viewed only sometimes when I blink and put pressure on my right eye. I see it fir 2 seconds then it fades until I blink/squeeze my eye again. Its black on white surfaces and dark green/red in the dark. Most noticeable when anxious.
This phenomenum is in my opinion anxiety related, a result of nervous sensitisation. Many years ago I christened it Sky Blinkers Syndrome because you can see it if you look at a white cloud and blink. They always go and do no physical damage to the eye though if you start testing for them regularly they tend to stay. The secret is to Accept them withiut fear and they go. O
Eye doctors do not understand this non organic/physical symptom and try to convince you its a floater or aural migraine symptom which of course it isn't. So just accept it and don't stress over it - but for reassurance see an eye doctor who will examine your eyes and find nothing.

I wanted to add that if I drink a couple of glasses of water the bright spot when blinking will stop and blinking goes back to normal.

Same thing is happening to me. Exactly what you described

If you see the spot in just one eye, it is within the eye, if you see the same spot in both eyes, it is stemming from the brain.
The bright spot that appears when you blink is inflammation pressing on the optic nerve. Likely due from allergies from sinuses carried into the eye. See a good herbalist to reduce inflammation. No alcohol no sugar.

That is very interesting about being dehydrated and eye flashes. I think it may be the cause of the flashes in my left eye. Mine started AFTER I went for an eye check up. Air bags deployed in my car accident and I could only see yellow light in my left eye (foggy) and when I blinked it would clear somewhat and then seemed to go back to normal.
I went to my eye doctor to be checked. I thought some of the powder from the air bag might still be in my left eye. The flashes started the next day. From the top of my left eye and went downward and then vanish. It was so white with a black ring and distracting, like something was coming at me and I'd turn my head away. It has been 5 weeks and the flashes are lessening to about 10 times a day but quicker in duration. My doctor said there is no eye injury in either eye, no disease, no glaucoma or cataracts. I do have high blood pressure and tend to be dehydrated (especially since I've been home recuperating from the accident). I think your post was very helpful and maybe exactly why this is happening in my left eye!
Thank you very much. I do have an appointment for a recheck in 2 weeks but might not need it! Best regards to all.

I have had the problem of a reflective flash of light when I blink, compare to a circular image of light, on and off for a few years now.... I've had many hospital tests but nothing really conclusive has been found... I think that there is an area on my macula that causes the reflection and it is more apparent when I am stressed... Don't think that anything that can be done except for me to change my stressful lifestyle....

I had the same for about two months now. Seen the Ophtalmologist twice in case there is tearing of retina. According to doctor the gel between retina and cornea tears and it could pull parts of the retina and that is a problem. The floaters are that gel separating and the doctors don't appear concerned about it. I still see the roundish silver flash out of the corner of my right eye. The doctor didn't seem particularly concerned about it once he determined the retina appears to be fine.

Oh gosh. This is happening to me. I DID abuse cardio. I've been on a super health kick and started my weight lifting program last night. Also got on my whole body vibrator thing, too. And jogged a bit. Doing a fruit detox (or trying to). I'm 60. So, no carrot juice? I was going to do more, thought Vit A was good for the eyes. I'm confused! :)

I too have a light spot when I blink and it changes colours when against different colour backgrounds , I have been to see an optician who did the usual tests and took photos of my eye and it appears I have a red spot which he says is a retinal haemorrhage and he sent me to my doctor to have my blood pressure checked and I have to have a blood test for diabetes he also recommended the doctor refers me to the eye hospital to have it checked out ,he says it will most probably be gone by the time I get the appointment but its best to be safe than sorry , scared ain’t the word
