Hey guys, I've also been suffering from fordyce spots. As long as I can remember I've had very chapped lips and I always picked at the peeling parts of my lips. I'm sure over the years all the touching of my skin oils to my lips has greatly increased the appearance of fordyce spots. Right now my plan is to just put on healing lip balm every day and force myself to not pick at my lips. When my lips do get dry, I can warm them with a wet towel and scrub the dry skin off with a towel, but not my hands. I like the idea given above of exfoliating with jojoba oil, I'm going to try that. I always try to stick to more natural remedies so I believe exfoliating and letting the pores clear themselves will probably work the best. Also sticking to a healthy diet just improves every aspect of your body. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, no processed foods like bread or pasta, no sugars, etc. I do completely empathize with all of you the fordyce spots do cause me great anxiety and self esteem issues, sometimes I don't want to leave the house because I think it would be bad to expose my lips to more weather or because they are so chapped I think people will judge me. But for the most part it seems like I'm the only one who notices, people still like to kiss me etc the truth is you can only see then when you look really close, I unfortunately I do every time I look in a mirror and it makes me feel depressed. Wish there was a quick way to get rid of them but it seems there isn't. I do not think the laser treatment seems safe at all

I made some research and I came up with three possible permanent solutions, the problem is that two of them are out of US:

1)      Professor of plastic surgery in Germany, Professor Norbert Pallua, based in Aachen has pioneered a new method of Fordyce Spot treatment using micro-punch excision.

2)      New treatment in Australia Sebaceous Gland Ablation. This procedure supposedly destroys the sebaceous gland the root of the problem. Dr Philippa McCaffery

3)      Have you ever heard about camouflage tattoo? Basically, it's a method used to cover scars with skin color tattoo ink. I saw some pictures of this procedure done in the lips as well.

I think its possible hope someone in australia could try it.

My research:

(SGA) Sebaceus Gland Ablation  its pretty much the same as (PDT) Photodynamic Therapy) "I Think" cause it reduces de amount of oil within the pores.  or sebaceus gland.   i also found and interesting video about sebaceous hyperplasia  of a machine called Skin Classic (search on youtube)

I also found a post about FordyceS and PDT:

Q:Is Photodynamic therapy effective against fordyce spots on the upper lip? I saw a dermatologist about white bumps on my upper lip and she suggested Photodynamic therapy but she has only tried it on a few patients and said only half were effective?

Dr. Answer: While there is no clinical trials that validate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for treatment of sebaceous hyperplasia or Fordyce spots, you may have better clinical outcome if electrodessication is applied immediately prior to PDT.

here an Article about co2 laser:

Treatment of Fordyce spots with CO2laser.

Dr.Jorge Ocampo-Candiani, Adriana Villarreal-Rodríguez, Alba G Quiñones-Fernández, Maira E Herz-Ruelas, Javier Ruíz-Esparza

BACKGROUND: Fordyce spots are heterotopic sebaceous glands that can be located at the lips' vermilion or the oral mucosa. Although this is considered a rather common disorder, a treatment for this condition that sometimes affects patients from only a cosmetic viewpoint has not yet been described. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate CO2 superpulsed laser treatment in two subjects with Fordyce spots. METHODS: Two patients with papules and yellowish plaques at the upper lip corresponding to Fordyce spots were treated with coherent Ambulase CO2 superpulsed laser (Coherent Medical, Palo Alto, CA); after informed consent was obtained, two to three passes were performed in one session using 2 and 4 W and a spot size of 2 mm. RESULTS: Complete re-epithelization was observed 2 weeks later with no residual Fordyce papules in the treated area and no side effects. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that CO2 superpulsed laser can be considered a safe and effective treatment for patients with Fordyce spots, offering excellent cosmetic results

Several patients in this study received treatment for cosmetic reasons and experienced no recurrence after CO2laser, E/D, or excision.

Sixteen patients who were diagnosed with Fordyce's spots in dermatology clinics from 2000 to 2009 were included in the study. This report is a review upon the first report on Fordyce's spots in Korean individuals, and we expect that this will provide a foundation for further study or medical treatment of patients with this condition.

I think im going to try the hyfrecator to reduce them or the Co2 laser but wich is the exactly type of co2 laser i have to ask for?

Please keep asking, searching and posting

Cheers!

I found a home treatment method that's been working so far for me! I basically exfoliate every morning and night with a wash cloth and hot water. I gently exfoliate any top layer of dead skin off my lips and slowly a little bit of the fordyce white part underneath has been coming out along with the first layer of dead skin. I am also going to try exfoliating with jojoba oil as someone mentioned above that they do with a toothbrush - I believe this will work even better. As they describe above, as you gently exfoliate, some of the fordyce naturally comes out along with the dead skin. The most important part is that I make sure not to touch my lips with my hands during the day, as that will add extra oil to your lips that can cause fordyce. I also make sure not to lick my lips throughout the day, as that will dry up your lips and cause your glands to produce more oil, which is what can cause fordyce. To keep my lips moisturized every day and night I have been using neosporin lip health daily hydration therapy - really keeps them moist and lasts for a long time. I make sure to exfoliate before putting the neosporin on to keep them clean so the neosporin doesn't lock in any unwanted oils. My lips look healthier than they have in years!! I'm extremely happy and I believe the trick is to just stop picking at the dead skin with my fingers and keep my lips clean throughout the day by gently exfoliating. I was so worried that the fordyce would keep spreading until I wouldn't be able to go out in public, but after reading about the people above who exfoliated with jojoba oil I decided I needed to take a new approach. I'm going to stick with this method as I really feel like my lips are starting to look healthy again!! Be kind to your lips, don't do anything drastic like burning them with wire or laser treatment!! Use natural products like jojoba and exfoliate and let your skin naturally heal itself!! Good luck everyone

I noticed I had spots about a month ago, but remember feeling tiny bumps on my lip for several months before that; they just weren't noticeable. Now, I feel really self conscious about it, even though my girlfriend says you can't see them at all unless I really show her by lifting my lip. In any case, I have had minimal "success" with treating them. I started washing my lips with Neutrogena facial cleansing bar and let the suds soak for a while before rinsing. The skin gets pretty tight, but since I started using it a week ago, it looks like the more noticeable ones are slightly less protruded and match more of the tone color of my lip. This has really made me not want to socialize. I can't believe something as small as this can cripple my whole being. It's always on my mind. Everything I eat or do makes me wonder if it will affect my fordyce in any way. It's a nightmare.

Treatment of Fordyce Granules with a CO2 laser: Report of Two Cases

ABSTRACT

Fordyce granules are referred to as benign ectopic sebaceous glands characterized by multiple yellow papules, occurring mainly in the lower lip. It is mainly observed in adult men. The present study describes two cases of patients with Fordyce granules who were treated using a CO2 laser and obtained good cosmetic results.

CASE REPORTS

Patient 1: A thirty-five-year-old man with multiple yellow, asymptomatic papules since adolescence, located bilaterally on the upper lip, typical of Fordyce granules (Figure 1).

Patient 2: A thirty-two-year-old man with multiple papules in the upper lip, suggestive of Fordyce granules developing from adolescence (Figure 2).

METHOD

For both patients a choice was made to use superpulsed CO2 Laser (LuxarTM, Woodinville, Washington, USA), with prior regional block and local infiltration with2% lidocaine and 1:100,000 epinephrine. A 5W power level with a 2mm spot size was applied in two passes, with the necrotic tissue being removed with moistened gauze (Figure 3). Following the procedure, patients were instructed to use a cream containing fibrinolysin, deoxyribonuclease and chloramphenicol (FibraseTM) three times per day for ten days.

RESULT

In approximately ten days there was local re-epithelialization in both patients. After one year there was no recurrence in the treated area, with satisfactory aesthetic results (Figures 4 and 5).

DISCUSSION/ CONCLUSION

There are few studies on Fordyce granules in the dermatologic literature. Though they are considered a normal variation of the sebaceous glands, some patients experience aesthetic concerns around them, and thus alternatives have been developed to resolve their appearance.1,7-10 A report on photodynamic therapy with 5-ALA based treatment yielded poor results with significant side effects, such as pain, erythema, edema, blistering and post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.8 Monk treated a patient with oral isotretinoin for cystic acne, verifying regression of the Fordyce granules and recurrence after nine weeks.9 Another report cites the use of bichloroacetic acid in a patient's upper lip with a reduction in the granules for at least three months.1 The use of electrodessication and curettage was the therapeutic option in another case.10

The CO2 laser has a 10,600nm wavelength, which is located in the distant spectrum of the infrared band. It has been used for over 30 years in surgical dermatology due to its efficiency in vaporizing and cutting tissues, and for producing an effective intraoperative hemostasis.7 Ocampo-Candiani et al. used CO2 laser in two patients and obtained consistent results, similar to those obtained in the previous study.7

Current ultrapulsed systems—such as the one used in the authors' cases—allow the control of the tissue's temperature, and a precise ablation.7 This laser can be applied with good results in the treatment of various benign skin lesions.7

Taking into account its straightforward use and the accuracy with which the lesions are removed, the authors believe that CO2 laser is a good alternative for the treatment of Fordyce granules.

Received on: 27 June 2012Approved on: 5 March 2013The present study was carried out at theUniversidade de Pernambuco (UPE)—Recife(PE), Brazil.

The Sebaceus Gland Ablation also known as the Kobayashi Method originated in Japan. These procedure is available in some Korean Spas in Southern California. Basically they zap every pimple individually with a fine point needle using radio frequency I believe.  I've never tried it but it seems a lot safer than laser treatment or hyfrecator ( which only burns the top surface of the lesion). Although this technique is mainly used to treat acne, I guess you can consider fordyce as acne on the lips.

Cosmetic tatoo really was great

The spots on my lips were really bad. I wore a mustache for twenty five years. I saw those tattoo shows and thought this might be the way to go. I found a great cosmetic tattoo specialist. She camouflaged my lip. I was very happy. I does not look like lipstick and only cost $300. It took about three visits to get it to cover. I wish I had done this a long time ago.

I have battled with fordyce spots for about 4 years, searching constantly on the Internet for a cure. I had tried hyfrecation, as well as, almost every home remedy I could think of. After reading about co2 laser and some of the success it had had in treating fordyce condition I decided to try and call different dermatology clinics to see if they performed the procedure and also if they had treated fordyce spots.after numerous calls I found a clinic that said they had treated fordyce with a fractional co2 laser. To make a long story short I had the procedure performed a week ago and so far my lip looks 10 times better. There are still a couple of scabs that need to fall off and it has only been 1 week so I think that in a month or two I will be able to tell y'all if the procedure really worked because we all know of their ability to come back.
